A short YouTube conversation (Cameron Herold and another speaker) addressing whether a COO title is higher than a President title. The speakers argue the President title often ranks above C-level roles, that President and CEO can be interchangeable in practice, and that Executive VP usually ranks above other VPs.
So I got asked an interesting question.
Recently in one of our LinkedIn lives and it's Is a COO title higher than a President title or is the President title higher than the COO title?
That's a really intriguing question. The President title.
Tends to be higher than a C level title. It tends to designate that you have almost full reporting or full strategy oversight of the organization, whereas CEO tends to have that. So I think CEO and President tend to be almost interchangeable.
If you've got a.
President president inside of your company and you have a CEO inside.
Of your company, the CEO.
Is probably more like chairman at that point and the president is really tends to be leading the organization.
You'll also sometimes.
Have an Executive VP and lots of other VPs. Usually the executive VP will be a higher level title than the other VPs inside the organization.
What really matters.
Most though is the clarity inside of your organization. Right from the outside world, it really doesn't matter if it's President or coo. It's going to be interchangeable enough that customers, suppliers, the mass market will at least take that role as serious, regardless of its President or coo. But internally, you need your org chart to clarify the roles and responsibilities in the reporting structure so that at least inside the organization, people know who's really calling those shots.
