10 years ago, having more than 8-9 direct reports would be catastrophic. Would mean that you will actually spend your whole day just managing people. I am seeing these days with better systems in place, and what is more important, I think, with more better coordination in place, once you start delegating instead of controlling, micromanaging people, then it actually unlocks and allows you to create a flatter structure. You don't really need For a company with 100-200 people, you don't need 3-4 layers of executives. For a company with 70,000 or 700,000 people, I am seeing the same exact trend. People are removing whole layers of leadership because the operations are now helped by the right coordination layer and helped by the delegation principles rather than just micromanaging layers.
