Rob Follows tells mid-size entrepreneurs to hire professional advisors like STS one to two years before selling. He walks through the preparation process that leads from early planning to a purchase offer.
I'm curious what you would advise an entrepreneur, mid-sized company on getting ready to sell. My kind of ideal is that they should be talking to a group like STS a year before or 2 years. Yes. They want the exit.
Yes. If you're a $50 to $100 million company, when do they engage you?
What's that process look like to get to an offer?
They need a team. You need a sell-side advisor, you need a wealth manager, you need a good M&A lawyer, and you need a coach. That's going to help you through the ups and downs of this. That team is your team through the whole process. So getting that lined up early is important. We'll start 2 years before. We have a ValueMax program where we will charge nothing if we're not doing a huge amount of work. But the currency you're giving us is that sell-side mandate now. So they give us the mandate now, we build the hockey stick and we work really hard to get the value up and help them develop and maximize value.
