The 5-Step Blueprint for Leaders

Cameron Herold outlines five practices for better leadership: write a vivid vision of your ideal future, schedule quality time with family, maintain a public bucket list of 101 experiences, establish a strict sleep routine, and move your body daily. He details his own sleep protocol: red-light glasses, no screens after 7 pm, melatonin, white noise, and an eye mask.

I just figured this out recently, and it's something that most people are not doing. Most people are going through the motions. Most people are working hard, they're showing up, they're doing their day-to-day lives, and they end up on their deathbed and they go, "Wow, I wish I'd done a whole bunch of these things." Thankfully, I have a vivid vision which guides me in my personal journey. My wife and I also have a vivid vision, which is a 4-page document describing our marriage and our relationship and where we're going together, and that guides us. But let me tell you 5 core things that you can do as an individual to help you have a better life. Number 1 is craft that 4 or 5 page description of you as a person. What do you do for fun? What are your hobbies? What is your fitness like? What are your eating habits like? How are you exploring sexuality? Maybe using psychedelics. What are you doing in terms of spending time with your kids? And craft a 4 or 5 page written description of you and your future that guides you. That's number 1. Number 2 is put time in your calendar for the people that you love. Put time in your calendar with not just their birthdays and dinners, but trips with them. Times away with your kids. I love spending time with my kids one-on-one on 3 or 4-day trips. Not always both of my kids with me, but sometimes doing trips with them individually. Number 3 is take a look at your personal calendar and look at your bucket list. So I actually have published my bucket list. It's on my website. It shows about 101 things that I want to do or try or achieve or learn. Or experience or explore around the world. It includes festivals and hobbies and sports and just things I want to do. It also is a huge section down below of all the bucket list things that I've accomplished in my life. And by having that bucket list and sharing it with people, sharing it with my spouse, sharing it with my kids, revisiting it myself, that helps guide my journey as well. If you're the COO or second in command to the CEO of a company doing minimum $2 million in revenue, come check us out at cooalliance.com and welcome home. Number 4 is make sure you have a really good solid sleep routine. We really had to work hard on our sleep routine because we sold everything 5 years ago to be global nomads and travel around the world. We've literally been in 70 countries in the last 5 years together. So sleeping in a different place every single week, you have to have a good sleep routine. Here's what our routine is. At around 6 o'clock at night, we turn the temperature down in the house. At around 7 o'clock at night, we put red light glasses on and we try to avoid technology. Then we have a warm shower before bed. We take a little bit of melatonin. I take 3 milligrams. We have white noise machines beside our beds. So the white noise machine sends off noise and blocks any of the ambient noise in the area. We wear wax earplugs. I have eye masks right beside the bed. No water or juice or coffee or tea or anything after about 7 o'clock at night because then you have to wake up in the middle of the night to pee. We also try to limit salt. Screens and turn down our screens really, really low. I actually try to just listen to a podcast or a book before bed, so I'm not even looking at my phones. But that's number 4. And then number 5 is make darn sure that you're actually getting physical exercise. One of the little hacks we do is anytime we see stairs and an escalator, we take the stairs. I put time into my calendar to get to the gym. In fact, I just finished hiking up to a gym. I'm in Sicily right now in Italy. Sicily. 20 minutes up to the gym, did a workout in the gym, and then 17 minutes back down just to film these videos for you. But putting time in my calendar every day to walk, to hike, to get to the gym, those are the little habits that I think are gonna help you in life. They're certainly helping me with mine.
