Cameron Herold says CEOs lose employees by treating them as workers instead of whole people. At a CEO gathering, leaders anonymously shared personal struggles—marital problems, financial distress, health issues—that moved the room to tears. Genuine empathy for what employees carry outside work drives retention and high eNPS scores.

How do we care more about our employees' lives, their fears, their insecurities, their home life, the problems with their kids? How do we care more about them as a human than anyone else in their life does? None of this shit really matters. This is just what we do to make money. My most recent CEO Alliance event, I had every member in the CEO Alliance write down one thing they were deeply struggling with. They wrote it on a Post-it note, crumpled up the Post-it note, threw it in the center of the room. Then they all went up together, picked up a Post-it note, came back, and they read it out. And it was stuff like, I'm struggling with my marriage, my spouse is cheating on me, I'm going bankrupt, I hate my weight. The people were sobbing in the room because we realized that every single person, including you, including me, is struggling with something. And when you care more about the person, that's where your employee net promoter score comes from.
