Cameron Herold argues companies should hire right, not fast. Most firms lack basic interview skills like knowing what to look for and letting candidates actually talk. He teaches these techniques through his Investing in Leaders training and follows the principle: hire slowly, fire quickly.
Hiring fast or hiring right?
Absolutely hiring right. The whole adage of, of hire slowly, fire quickly is true. The key is that most companies have no idea how to interview. They don't know what to look for. They don't know how to probe. They don't know how to ask the right questions. They don't know how to shut up and let the candidate talk. One of the core skills in my Investing in Leaders training is teaching the skill of interviewing. So absolutely hiring right.
Train your team or replace your team?
I'm gonna go with train your people as long as they're the right people. So if your spider senses are saying this is the wrong person, if you have doubt that they're ever going to improve, get rid of them quickly. But if you believe in them, if they're the right kind of people, if they're in the right seat, then give them the support, grow their skills, grow their confidence, grow their connections, but give them a short timeline on which you need them to improve. So absolutely grow your people if they're the right people. Delegation or doing it yourself? Delegation. Your job is to get results through people. Your job is to get stuff done, but your not job is not to do it. Your job is to figure figure out who to delegate it to. And if you're saying to yourself, I don't have someone to delegate it to, pick someone, delegate it to them anyway, and spend your time coaching and growing them. But your job is to delegate, not to do.
