Time Management Is the Wrong Problem

Cameron Herold says the problem isn't time but priorities. Every Sunday he lists the week's tasks, picks 3-4 critical A-priorities and 8-10 B-priorities, numbers them, estimates hours, and blocks them in his calendar. His "Invest in Your Leaders" course teaches this system to executives.

We all have enough time and the same amount of time in our calendar. It's all about priority management. And not a single one of you have really had enough training on how to manage priorities and manage time. That's actually why you run out of time is you don't know how to manage it in the first place. So I like looking at the number one time management school system as my calendar, because my calendar shows me the amount of available time. And then I put those priorities into my calendar. So what I like to do on a Sunday night is come up with a list of things I need to get done. Over the next 7 days. Maybe it's 14 different projects that I need to get done or move forward or delegate inside of my team. Then I'm going to place them as A priorities and B priorities. Maybe I have 3 or 4 A priorities and maybe there's 8 to 10 are B priorities. Then I'm going to number the A priorities in order, kind of A1, A2, A3, the same with the Bs. Then I'm going to think about the amount of time for each of my priorities and I'm going to place them into my calendar. So I go into this system of time management, priority management in a lot of detail in my Invest in Your Leaders training. Go to investinyourleaders.com. It has the skills that you and anyone inside of your company that manages others needs to be good at. I would put anybody in your org through this course, through all 12 modules, but time management, priority management is certainly one that we all could do better at. All right.
