Advanced Strategies For Selling On Amazon and Launching Products (Rapidfire Edition)

Ryan Daniel Moran leads a rapid-fire live session (Q&A) on advanced Amazon selling and product launch strategies. Key recommendations: use FBA exclusively for fulfillment, avoid the Amazon Vendor program, launch products to your own audience to boost Amazon rankings, prioritize capturing customer emails before sending traffic to Amazon, and use retargeting (Facebook/custom audiences) to pull Amazon buyers into your ecosystem. The transcript records many audience-specific questions (Shopify vs Amazon, subscriptions, handling suspensions, multi-channel approaches, private labeling, and product/brand focus).

Organic Facebook, ppc. And are people buying thank God on our site? Yeah. Okay, so send them over to Amazon and give them a second place to give you money. Okay. And then. But only through fba. Even if you can ship our warehouse only from fba, please, please do nothing but fba. Yes. And I will eat so much asparagus ahead of time.
No one will want to come over. Okay. Thanks, brother. You.
How are you? Hi. What's your name? Jean. Hi, Jean. Local, San Diego. Awesome presentation. Thanks. So do you work with people privately or do you have an audience of 100,000 or so? Do you have a card, Max? Yeah, I got one. All right. Good to meet you, Gene. What's up, guys? So specifically, what's your question? So right now we sell like meal prepping containers and Amazon gave us the ability to sell Amazon merch, such as clothing designs. I would, I would bypass merch and just create your own stuff and use Amazon fba. Got it. Okay, thank you. Yeah. Cool. What's up, guys? George. Hey, George. Is that what you said? George? Yeah. What's up, dude? So I started a company called Wind Pouch. We actually went through the whole process. We sold and just got it sold. I'm starting. Congratulations.
Which specifically is your question. So scaling on Amazon right now. We did a Kickstarter last year, raised 180,000. Right now we haven't ran any ads at all because we. There's been some kind of. We've been trying to get a partner out. There's three of us and he's exiting and we're buying up the main of his portion. So. So, so how can I help? So.
How would you scale that on Amazon? Launch it to your audience, to the vegan audience? Launch to the. Do you have a like an audience of followers already? Yes. How many? 5,000. Okay, so launch it and get them to buy on Amazon specifically. And that will juice Amazon's algorithm to start to give you organic traffic. Would you do vendor. Would you stay on Amazon? No.
Stay away from Amazon vendor run. Run away in the other direction. We did that with my other company. Yes. If Amazon offers to do your marketing for you, you are a better marketer than them. Do not get. Do not know. The turnaround is really big too. What's that? Because it sucks. Don't go vendor. You are a better marketer than Amazon. In the one year we've done vendor with them, they've changed like 10 times. Yeah. Don't avoid vendor. Hey, hey, hey, everybody. Do any of you have an audience of 100,000 that you just want to launch physical products to. Yes. Would you talk to. Where's Max? Where'd Max go? Max, where'd you go? Where's Max? He's right back here in the light. Max, come here. If any of you have audience. If what? Market.
Travel, Digital Nomad. Okay, cool. So if you just like are looking for a, like, we do build that stuff for you. If you want to do that, talk to this guy here. That's who you want to bother. What are you asking about subscriptions on Amazon? Yep. Water filtration, pitcher, continuity. We haven't moved over. We did about 600,000 Shopify based on. We haven't moved over to Amazon yet. Do it quickly. Okay. And the value of subscription revenue on those exits and multipliers. Straight sale. Oh, it definitely helps. I mean, because it's mrr, right? So. So it definitely helps. I think there, there is a way, there is a way to measure it on Amazon. I'm not sure what the mechanics of that are, but if you get subscribe and Save, which you get, if you're an fba, that certainly helps your valuation. Yeah, of course. Cool.
Question. What's up? So when you're sending external traffic right to Amazon. Yeah. How do you. Because that's your whole thing, right?
Yep. How do you track that? Because it's different than if you're selling a Shopify or you're on an E commerce site. Right. Where you have all of those metrics. Like, Amazon reporting is pretty terrible. It is. And it's very difficult to track. But I will give up the tracking data in order to get the organic boost that will get me three more buyers later. So there's the conflict of do I take the hundred dollar customer value now? Because I have an upsell sequence versus sending to Amazon. Why would I give up that? Why would I give that? And the answer is, because that is going to be three more customers later. And it's my job to take those buyers and to warm them up into my own funnel and get them to buy from me somewhere else. So I will punt the immediate customer value so that I get way more customers that come into my ecosystem. Brian Lee is the founder of the Honest Company and he said something that I thought was really smart. He said, I care that my customer has the product in their house. I don't care where they bought it from. That to me is the winning. Do you do Facebook ads? Yeah. Okay, so there's no money on Facebook. Go on. How do you know if that's working? If you send direct to Amazon instead of like, always, always measure it on the email address. Always get the email address first. Because that's the second part of the Illuminati pyramid of building up the audience. Never send straight to Amazon, always get the customer data and then send to Amaz Amazon. Amazon is where you complete the loop. Once you build the audience, does that make sense? Can I say that? What's up, dude? So we had two Nutri products that were doing pretty well on Amazon. Yep. These were our own brand. We would have competitors who would report them to Amazon and Amazon would capriciously suspend sales. Yes. And we went through this over and over and over again. Eventually it was just so painful we moved to Shopify. And, you know, we're pretty happy with Shopify, but we'd love to be back on Amazon. How do you deal with that? As much as I can. So it's going to happen is kind of the price you pay. And the longer you're in the game, the more reps that you get and the more, the better you get at the process and you start to systemize the appeal process and it still sucks, but you still go through it. Is there an agency that you know. Yeah, there's a couple legal firms. I think one is called Cascadia, that specialize specifically in Amazon claims. But it's still a bitch and a half to deal with. Stop your fba. And then, yeah, it sucks and it's kind of. They're getting better, but it's kind of the price you play. The price you pay to play. What do you. I like your shirt. Thank you. When you think about taking people from your Amazon Skus and bringing it into your own space with content, like, have you done that? Say one more time, like, bring people like your customers on Amazon, get their email and all that, but upsell them into content are related to what you're doing in physical product. I still don't understand. Say it one more time. So let's say you. You sell something on Amazon. Yeah. And you eventually get your customers by inserts, whatever, and you want to upsell them, sell them into content, like courses or whatever it is. So have you done that? Do you have any advice regarding that? No.
Because I find it really easy to go from digital product to physical product. I don't find it as easy to go from physical product to digital product, but I will do inserts, retargeting, and as much as I can to get that customer to follow me so I can sell them more stuff that's part of the audience Building piece. So I care about the customer record and care about getting the customer, but I don't care about selling them digital products.
Are you suggesting for people who are developing a product to be a manufacturer to just be a wholesaler.
Partner with a manufacturer and have them fulfill everything? Yeah. What market are you in? Swimming pools. Oh cool. Yeah, cool. Yeah. I private label everything. We do contract manufacturing for just about everything. And then do you fulfill like all the oath? FBA everything is FBA everything. Let Amazon handle all of that except your marketing. Don't let them touch your marketing.
What's up dude? You don't actually take a multi channel approach that I got a question from a sales standpoint. You and everybody else.
So I formerly was one of the founding members of one of Channel Advisor's biggest competitors and like we had a lot of clients who like so, so yeah, like I mean going multi channel is great but 80% of the action is going to be on Amazon no matter what.
So yeah, well we'll fulfill to Walmart, will fulfill to iherb.com but 80% of the action is going to come from Amazon and most about any industry. Yeah. So your multi channel is marketing 100%. Totally. Yeah. So my question is, so how do you know if you're a good fit for your mentorship or program? Like can you recommend somebody that. What, what's, what's your goal? Dog product business. Higher end is like affordable luxury essentially like leather dog leash, leather dog collar. I'm the scrappy guy, like getting into digital marketing but I was a three to five product guy. Yeah. What level are you at right now? Only 130 sales per month. Okay. So I mean I work with people who are like have the first million kind of in sight or have funding. Do you have any suggestions for like the lower guys like me, like who to go to? Honestly, my podcast, which is free. Okay, perfect. Yeah. Appreciate it. Yeah. I have a list of about 30,000 buyers. Fashion niche, it's all Shopify. So just wondering how you. It's all drop shipping. So just wondering how you would transfer that over to Amazon. Yeah. In fashion specifically or in any industry. For this one. For this one. If you have something that is that you're selling a lot of that's automatable, put that one on Amazon and use your list and get give them another way to buy. Which is Amazon. Correct? Yeah. Does that make sense? Yeah, that makes sense. Cool. Thanks man. About the interaction between Amazon and Shopify. So if you're doing well on Amazon and you start Doing direct response. Are you looking to break even on Shopify and drive up your Amazon or are you looking to get your Amazon customers over to Shopify? So my knowledge on Shopify is like 10% of what it is on Amazon. I don't. If I'm doing well on Amazon, I tend to stay there. So I don't feel any need to diversify my sales. Yeah, I care about doubling down on where my sales are already coming from. I was wondering because we're seeing, we're doing Shopify with Facebook ads and it seems to be driving Amazon up. Yeah, we can't link that. Yeah. And. But you're breaking even on the Shopify and you're probably not that so great. And you're probably not doing anything intentional to get people to buy on Amazon. If you were to do that much, you'd double your Amazon's presence, maybe triple doing Facebook ads to Amazon? No, if you were to take your buyers and give them another way or your non buyers and give them another channel to buy from, which is Amazon, you'll double or triple your Amazon purchase? Yeah, you bet. What's up? We've got about an audience of about a million now. Cool.
Supplements. We've been focused on that. Did you diversify at some point with that size of audience? What do you mean by diversify?
Are you selling commodities or do you have a brand behind that?
So you're trying to. What is it now?
No, like do you have a brand now or are you just selling commodities? So, so what? So what's, what's the question? If you've got a brand and it's going well, you're doing well in your space, but you've got a large audience size. Do you move, do you try and move into like a different space with that audience or do you stay? I mean you can, I mean supplying companies are perfectly sellable. So you can scale that up as big as you want and then sell that if you want. An audience of a million people is plenty big to launch multiple brands. If you want to launch multiple brands, it can be multiple supplement companies. They could be multiple any, anything you want. I mean that's your own call. Is there something specific that I can help shift for you?
Oh, so you, so you want to launch additional products, like additional brands to that audience. How do you communicate with that audience? We've got tons of Amazon emails that are not typically responsive. Got it.
Okay, so about an email list of about a million most. What's the brand? Okay, I'm familiar. So. Alright. Alex was A student. Yeah. You can. You can launch multiple brands to that and that. That would be Max for sure. I mean, Alex could be perfectly capable of building up another brand if he wanted to do. If you can be gonna rope him in, but. Yeah. Yeah. What's that? Well, I mean, you just gave him a big check.
He was that same company you were talking about. Yeah. What's that? The same company you've mentioned from Bain Capital. It was not actually. So this was a different group. They bought us because we bought them. I'm familiar with the story. Yeah. What's your name? Bill. I'm Ryan. Nice to meet you. Stick around. I'd like to connect with you more afterwards and definitely connect with Max. Hey, thanks for taking us. Hey, what's up, man? Thanks, man. Appreciate it. What's your name? Dan. Richard. Dan. Good to meet you. Wanted to say. All right. Thanks, Dan. Appreciate it. I'm subscribed to your podcast, so I was really happy to be here. And so we launched a product. Oh, I forgot to do the thing where I got everybody to subscribe, which drives up my ranking. Who has an iPhone? We'll do it now. Who has an iPhone? Pull out your phone, open up your podcast app. Oh, I've already subscribed to you. I'm already subscribed to.
Part of me is like, damn it, but open up podcast, apparently. And then hit the purple. But click on it and hit the purple button that says subscribe. There we go. How about this? I'll do it. I'll put it on my Facebook. Awesome. What's up, Justin? Hey, I was just gonna catch up with you. We got some mutual friends, so I don't have any specific questions, so. Cool.
Cool. We've got a product that we just launched in the airports about a month ago. We sold about 3,000 units, but their margins are obviously because this is an airport. So you're saying what I should do is build an audience online? Yeah. I mean, if you control the audience, you can command whatever profit margins you want. Because.
How many of you have bought anything from Bulletproof and paid twice the price because there was. You were in his audience. I mean, if you have a difference and you have the audience, you can have whatever profit margins you want. It's the reason why on a video sales letter, are you able to charge $59 for supplements versus on Amazon, you get the same damn thing for 18 bucks. Do you have the person's attention and do you have a difference that you can highlight and then you can have whatever profit margins you want?
What's up? Oh, hey, Tiffany. Nice shirt. Yeah, we're gonna move into the hallway. I'm being kicked out.
Okay, cool. Can we. Can we do it? You just look at what is happening in the marketplace right now. You're literally living in the greatest economic boom ever. Don't waste this time in that skill set. Fantastic. Thank you very much. All right, thanks. Appreciate it. What's up, guys? Yeah, just a quick question. Fba, do you do FBA or do you also Only do. Only do fba? Do not sell. Do not sell directly to Amazon. I will pee on your lawn. But what about.
I really don't. Don't go. But what about just selling onesie twosies directly from your warehouse? What's a onesie twosie? I have individual products. Like, let's say someone goes and they buy an individual product that we manufacture. And just give me. Give me an example.
Fifteen dollar product. What is the product? Tea. We manufacture, import and blend tea. Okay, great. So. So do you have a brand around that or are you. Great. So what's a onesie twosie about that? That is a brand that you should be selling, that you should be sending straight over to Amazon and launching to an audience. We're doing fba. We need a lot of juice put into it right now because we're not paying any attention to it. Okay. How are you getting customers right now?
Organic Facebook, ppc. And are people buying, thank God. On our site? Yeah. Okay, so send them over to Amazon and give them a second place to give you money. Okay. And then. But only through fba. Even if you can get somewhere else, only from fba. Okay. Please, please do nothing but fba. Yes. And I will eat so much asparagus ahead of time.
No one will want to come over.
You bet. If you need help with that, hit Max. Wherever you. Max is behind you. He's the content guy or he's the listener guy. So if you've got an audience, we'll partner. We'll partner with people and do their. We are not at 100,000. We're below 100,000. Cool. Meaningful. Good. All right. Good to meet you. Thanks. What's up, Dave? So I don't even know these. I have another business called DIY gift kits, and we sell DIY kits.
That seems very consistent. Exactly Right. So my question is, the kits, though, are all different, right? So we have a hot sauce making kit, which is fantastic. We have a bath bomb making kit, lip balm making kit, all the different kits. The hot sauce making kit is like instructor, right? That's that's our unicorn of our brand. Okay. And.
For years I know we should develop the audience, right? I haven't. And now my question is where do I place my focus? Do I try to build the DIY brand, which is a little more esoteric in my mind, or do we just service? Look, the answer is both. But like so what's the question? Where do I put my focus and build my brain? Do I build a tribe of hot sauce lovers and build products? Yes, that. Yes. With hot sauce T shirts? Yes. More hot sauces. More hot sauces, not more diy. Don't go. You are going after multiple markets. At that point, go deep into one of them. You bet. Call me when the eight figure check comes in. I'll help you invest it.
I love hot sauces. I'll join you. What about the mid 7 figure?
It's an okay amount.
Once you've actually funneled your traffic from your audience to now Amazon, what do you do with all the organic traffic that's coming in directly on Amazon just because your product is ranking better or whatever, how are you then pulling them into the audience you created on the other side? Inserts Facebook retargeting. But how do you retarget those purchases? Export the data from Amazon, upload them to Amazon. Yep. Yep. You can do that? Yep. I didn't know that a thing. They don't. Cuz last I checked they don't give you email. No, you don't get their email address. But you can export the data, have Facebook match it and run retargeting traffic to. Interesting. Advance matching.
What's that? There's my tidbit in the conference. Perfect. Actually I want to quickly. Hey Chris. Hi. I'm. I joined you in October but unfortunately it's turned into a shiny object. $5,000 around the object. So so much stuff going on. But since I know you're here, concentrate on it again. Okay, so we have about four or five products now. We have a list of about 10,000. Okay. So this year should we just concentrate on building up the audience? Building up the list as opposed to what? As opposed, as opposed to creating more products. Like are you happy? I mean like right about. We're at about 150 grand a year right now. So it's just. Just starting up with. So I would use the audience you already have to drive more sales of the products you already have until you're closer to 100k a month. That's where I would put all my attention. You've got 10,000 people. Is that an email list? Yeah, that's great. That's plenty enough to do damage. Put all your attention on going to that audience, throwing the products you already have until you're at 100,000, and then we can worry about which lever do we pull. And by the way, both of them are going to make you more money. Launching new products is going to make you more money. Building an audience is going to make more money. I should concentrate more on audience. You've got to. You have plenty enough to be able to get to 100k in the next 90 days. Wow. All right. Thank you. Yeah, you bet. Good to meet you. So. It is very good. I didn't mean. I just wanted to touch your head. So I saw a presentation yesterday with Ryan Deissers. Listen, Castaway. Awesome. Got it? Yes. Okay. So you won't forget me, the Chinese guy. Okay. Well done. Awesome. Got it. Yes. We're done. Okay. I'm. I'm tired. I'm done.
I'm. I'm out. I'm out.
I'm out of here. I'm done.
Sam.
