The Biggest Mistake Entrepreneurs and Marketers Make - eCommerce All Stars

Ryan Daniel Moran (speaker) argues that the biggest mistake entrepreneurs and marketers make is focusing on products and metrics instead of people. He advises entrepreneurs to identify a specific person/audience, prioritize face-to-face networking over online isolation, and build nimble small brands that can scale; he links entrepreneurship and free markets to personal and societal freedom.

I think the biggest thing that entrepreneurs overlook in terms of marketing funnels, conversions is at the end of the day, what we're really doing is we're building followings and we're building audiences. Most people are so obsessed with the numbers and the conversions and there's so much value to that. But behind all the numbers are people. And people have needs and desires and make decisions. And if we ignore that, then we're trading a long term impact and really what can make a meaningful difference in someone's life or in the world at large, we're trading that for the numbers. And if we forget that, I think we really miss our power as marketers and our power as entrepreneurs. The best advice I could give to someone who was first starting out is to forget selling products and to start thinking about people. What person are you marketing to? Because it's really hard to to sell a product that no one wants or to take just a generic person and get them to see a product and to pull out their credit card and buy. It's just really hard. It is really easy to identify a person and go on the Internet and get in front of a specific person. And if you know that a specific person has a specific need, taking the product that gives them that result is really simple and easy. So I think about people rather than products. And it just makes building a business so much more profitable, so much more fun, and so much faster than just trying to hawk products on the Internet. The best thing an online entrepreneur can do is get out of their computer chair and come be face to face with other entrepreneurs in the real world. We so often get lost and feel isolated being behind these animated boxes that we call computers that plug into the Internet. And we so miss how the real game of business is built because we're usually playing with numbers behind computers. But the minute that you connect with somebody who's doing something that complements what you're doing, your entire career can change. All of my biggest breakthroughs in business, all of my big levels up, have happened by me leaving my house and coming to an event, meeting a person. They don't happen in forums and behind the computer, they happen here. I think over the next three years you're going to see brands, really big brands that we're used to seeing in retail stores across the world. I think you're going to start to see them crumble might be too intense of a word. But even now we're seeing those big brands buy up smaller brands like we build in this community. And the reason for that is because small businesses are able to innovate faster, are able to be nimble enough to follow market trends. And that's what we're doing in E commerce. That's what we're doing by using sites like Amazon. It's like what the guys on Kickstarter do. They're following trends and they're able to be really agile and take advantage of market opportunities. I think you're going to see some of the small guys and gals from our community start, start to break out into the eight and nine figures if they really get their marketing right and if they get the team and systems piece right. I believe that entrepreneurs, free markets and capitalism is the best shot we have at creating the change that we want to see in the world. At getting your message out to the world, at getting your product that makes a difference in someone's life out to the world. I think it's the best way that we solve the government being involved in your life, trying to make decisions over what's best for you. You or healthcare or whatever those people think is best for your life. So the thing I'm focused on in my business is empowering as many entrepreneurs to make a difference in their own lives and changing their financial futures and also making a difference in this world because we need more free people who are running successful businesses and making an impact. And that's the best shot we have at creating the world we want.
