To be successful, you HAVE TO do this...

Ryan Daniel Moran (Capitalism.com) gives a short talk and mentoring-clinic excerpt advising entrepreneurs to stop trying to fix past failures and instead forgive themselves, double down on what’s working, and follow existing momentum. He uses his own post-sale investment mistakes and a mentoring interaction with a student (Debbie) to show how holding onto past loss, doubt, or using a working channel to prop up a failing one blocks growth.

Hey, guys. So in this video, I'm gonna try and give you a concept that's been really heavy on my heart recently because it's something that I've struggled with for a long time. And I see some of our students@capitalism.com struggling with it. And the thing is that when we clear this thing, so much fun and money and energy comes out the other side. But until we solve this problem, entrepreneurs keep running into walls and running into walls and running into walls. I could do this all day. Running into walls and running into walls.
If you've been not getting the results that you want, not making the money that you want, I guarantee you that you're doing one of these. You're running into the. And unfortunately, this is one of those lessons that you might have to learn on your own. But I'm going to try and give it to you because. Because if you can grasp this, there is literally nothing that you can't do. There's no amount of money that you can't make. But people hold themselves back because what this is is trying to fix things that aren't working. It's trying to solve problems. It's trying to get away from, from the things that are holding you back. For example, I sometimes work with entrepreneurs who are frustrated because they've tried a bunch of different things that didn't work for them. And they have this memory of all these businesses that did not work. And so when they show up to a new business with a clear plan, they're secretly thinking about, it's not going to work, it's not going to work. This isn't going to work. This isn't a good idea. And not only that, but they're also thinking about, I really need this to work because I've got bills to pay, because I've got to justify the money that I spent on this other program or this other business that didn't work out for me. I hate what I'm about to tell you, but my success rate with new entrepreneurs is higher than with entrepreneurs who have been doing this for several years. And the reason for that, I have concluded, is because new, fresh entrepreneurs don't have a long list of reasons why it's gonna fail. They don't have a long list of reasons of all the things that they've tried that haven't worked, thus justifying their belief that this is gonna be another failure. The longer that you spend thinking about what didn't work, what failed, what you're giving all your attention to that now, I can only tell you this because I know I sold a business in 2017 and made a ton of money. And then for the next two years, I made some investments that weren't very smart, started some new businesses that didn't.
Go in the way that I wanted them to.
And I spent so much time thinking about how I was going to make up for those failures, make up for those false starts, that I had a really hard time showing up to my next opportunity with fresh perspective and fresh eyes. And when I finally did, I started making a lot of money again. But I had to let go of the judgment that I had on myself of failing up to this point. I want you to watch a clip from one of the mentoring conversations that I had inside of my group mentorship. It's called the 1%. I just love this member dearly because she's. She's getting it and she's putting in the work and the time and she's being thoughtful about it. But in order to get to that point, she confessed that she was holding on to old resentments from past failures. And this is the moment that shifted her. Please watch. I'm just going to be.
I just get a little bit of a hunch about you on something.
Okay.
Okay. You need to absolve yourself of the sins of buying products in the past that didn't work out.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, there is definitely a fear.
Yeah.
You and lots of other people.
But.
There'S this great quote in psychology. I think it's by Greg Jacobs, who's a psychiatrist, who says, the curious paradox is that as soon as I accept myself fully, then I can change.
And one of the recurring problems or symptoms of entrepreneurs is as soon as they doubt themselves, they buy something else that is a distraction. And then they go down the route of the next distraction, and then they're like excited. Potential, hope, doubt creeps in by the next thing for your first step is to absolve yourself of the sin of losing up to this point. And I'd love. I'd love to help you reframe that by showing you that there are lots and lots of people who would be very happy to spend $30,000 in three years finding the absolute perfect business for them that they were uniquely qualified for, that they had a spec specific voice in that they were excited about that they knew exactly how to serve that target market and were already plugged into audiences that would rally behind that, that had high valuations and high profit margins. There's lots of people who would gladly make that trade.
Yeah. Yeah.
There's there's plenty of people who spend four years and more than $30,000 to not have that type of clarity in business or their life in a thing called college. So the faster you can, like, not only forgive yourself, but see that this was all a necessary step in the process for you to have the clarity for what you have right now. The faster you get there, the faster this brand becomes a reality.
I am too hard on myself. I am my. Sometimes my biggest enemy can be me because you look at all the mistakes and not the successes. I love this. You come with a business question. Man, that was some of the most major therapy.
Like Debbie, it's all an inside out game. Like, I wish it wasn't. Entrepreneurship would be so much easier if it wasn't an inside out game. Entrepreneurship would be so much easier if there was a how, right? And so what? Like, one of the things that makes me unique in this world is I.
Spent so many years obsessing about the.
How that I can tell you the how every which way. But I know that I can give the same how to one person and they'll build a million dollar business and the same how to somebody else and they'll call me a fucking scam artist.
So it's not the how that matters.
Let me give you an example from my own life that I'm actually embarrassed about. I have an economics background, and when you have an economics background, you think you're smarter than everybody else because you look at the world through a very specific way of doing things. And so when Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies came on the scene, I thought it was the dumbest thing that I had ever heard about because it had no intrinsic value. It went against the economic ideas that are ingrained into the system. And so I wrote it off as my friends were making tons and tons of money doing it. And instead, this was after I sold a business for a decent amount of money. I was trying to fix the investments that weren't working and trying to fix the old way, fix the things that I was doing in the old system where I would have made so much more money is if I had just accepted the fact that there was energy and momentum in a different area and that the best thing I could do is follow where the energy was, follow where the interest was, follow where the momentum was, rather than try to fix the temporary problems. Now, what entrepreneurs will do in their businesses is they'll often have something that is moving and something that is stuck, and they put all their attention on what is Stuck. Rather than putting all their attention to what's actually working, double down on what's working, not what's stuck. Because the only reason why you're giving your attention to what stuck is that you think you need to fix it in order to justify all the effort and energy you put into it. So you keep sinking money and attention into it rather than just freeing it up into things that are actually moving and growing and serving and creating. This came up in one of our calls, inside of the 1%, which is my mentoring group for entrepreneurs. And a student was talking about how in their business they were trying to get one thing to work so that it would fix the thing that wasn't work. Here's what I told her to do.
We are hoping that this online business is going to help us to sell the repair shop that we have. I know it's not going to happen over time.
No. Cindy, be careful not to use the thing that's working as a way to fix the thing that isn't working.
Let the thing that is working have the life of its own and grow into the thing that it needs to be and help the people that it's going to serve. Because if you let it do that, then it runs the chance of way out, earning the shop, going way bigger than this thing, and undoing all the financial struggles that may have kept you in a place where it was a struggle up to this point. You want me to tell you how to fix the business? How to use the thing that is giving you growth and energy to fix the thing that isn't. And the way that you fix it is by letting the thing that has energy to keep building energy. Many people run into the issue where something isn't working, and so all their energy goes into trying to fix the thing that isn't working. Ask me how I know. I mean, I've only made it enough times to be able to bring you this message.
So you start trying to fix the thing that isn't working rather than focusing on the thing that is doing really, really well.
But we often cut off the things that are doing well at their knees because we're trying to take away from that energy to fix the thing that ain't working. Don't make that mistake. Our job as entrepreneurs is to create a better future, not to fix the past. When something isn't working and you keep sucking money and energy into it, you start to believe that it's going to be a failure. And so you tend to run out of energy and it becomes just a downward Spiral. But your job is to look at where there's momentum happening that's easy for you to get plugged into. And that looks a lot like being interested in what you're doing, actually liking the thing that you are doing. Not just liking the results, but liking what you're doing on a day to day basis. I've gotten the opportunity to hang out with Gary Vaynerchuk and what I can tell you about him is that he actually loves everything that he's doing. It's a game to him, a genuine game. He genuinely does not care about the results, otherwise he wouldn't be flipping stuff at garage sales. When you can create the business that you want to do, regardless of the results, that's when you'll win. Debbie, who you met earlier, came back onto one of our follow up training calls in which she was now looking at the business she wanted to start and create and looking at it from a lens of how can I build something I genuinely like? And I warned her to stay in the mode of creating what you like. Not doing it so that you can quit a job, but doing it so that it excites you. Here's what I told her.
Do this thing right to where I'm not a slave to a boss, then.
You'Re doing it for the wrong reasons. If you're going to build this business the way that you want to build this business, you can't be constantly thinking about, about how much your life and your business sucks right now. No, I'm thinking, listen, Debbie, Debbie, listen, listen. You are playing this tenseness right now between the job and the business that you want, which means that you're going to try and push the business to get you out of your job, which is going to make you do dumb things.
Well, no, I just don't want to make them same mistakes that I made before with not building.
You have to let that go.
Okay, okay.
And this is how you actually like the business you start. Well, sure, you have to actually like what you are doing and then it doesn't, it doesn't matter to you what these short term results are. And it doesn't matter that you have to work it from 6pm to 10pm, five days a week because you actually like it. This is one of those things that like, you don't know until you actually experience it. But I have to tell you anyway, if you do the business that you like, it's the one that will open up doors and make you money the fastest to get you out of the job. But when you're operating from this place of I want to quit my job, tell me what to do in the business to quit my job. You're and the reason you're is because you start pursuing the short term profit rather than doing the things that are actually meaningful in the business. And that just keeps you in a trap that you never get out of. If you're watching this clip and you're like, yeah, it sounds nice, but I don't know what the business is that I'm really excited about. I don't know what business really fires me up. And yeah, I'm trying a bunch of different things, but like none of them are the ones that are going to take me to the promised land of having a business that's exciting, one that I can scale or maybe sell someday.
