Peter and a guest debate when lunar manufacturing facilities could actually work. One says 10 years, the other argues 15 to 20 is realistic. They discuss what's needed first: autonomous robots like Optimus and working mass-driver systems to launch products back to Earth orbit.
Peter, I'm gobsmacked to hear that you think it's going to be 20 years before we have fabs on the moon. My goodness.
Fabs on the moon, manufacturing and pumping into Earth orbit with mass drivers.
You think that's 20 years away?
Well, okay, maybe 15, but it's not the next 5 years.
Do I hear 10?
Eh, that's hard for me to— it's hard for me. I guess Optimus robot will improve that. Demand will improve that. But the concern is if you have a— not an explosion, but a collision of spacecraft in orbit generating debris. We still don't have any mechanism for removing debris from orbit. I mean, right now we have 10,000 satellites from Starlink, right? Which is the most ever pumped into orbit ever. And we're talking about 50 times that. And we're talking about not just the US, you know, Amazon's going to do their best. Jeff is not going to stand still while, you know, Elon's doing this. And then you've got Chinese constellations. So do you double or triple that number of satellites in orbit? And so it's, it's going to be a challenge.
