10 Characteristics of an Attractive Coach

In this live Monday‑Morning‑Mentor session, Chad Thibodeaux challenges coaches to flip the usual prospect‑centric mindset and ask themselves, “Are you who the client you’re targeting is looking for?” He explains that successful coaches must embody ten specific characteristics that make them attractive to ideal clients. The session walks through each trait in detail, offering concrete examples (e.g., Tony Horton’s P90X “muscle confusion” mechanism, Russell Brunson’s funnel work) and practical steps for implementation, such as auditing social‑media presence, crafting a logical linear process, developing a unique mechanism, telling relatable stories, celebrating client wins publicly, leveraging high‑profile connections, showing vulnerability, being accessible, and demonstrating trustworthiness through disciplined follow‑through. Chad intersperses the lecture with audience Q&A, providing targeted advice on avatar creation, branding for professional women, and using adventurous content (motorcycle rides, bungee jumps) to reinforce a coach’s desired lifestyle. The overarching message is that coaches who intentionally cultivate these traits will see higher conversion rates and stronger client relationships.

Hey everybody, how are you? Chad Thibodeaux here. Welcome to another Monday Morning Mentor. So glad to have you guys here if you're on with us live. So grateful if you're watching the replay. I hope that you are able to consume all the information, go back and watch this time and time again. Today what I want to do is I want to jump in and I want to pose a question for you, especially those of you who are in the online space and you're trying to make money online. Is, are you who the person you're looking for is looking for? Okay? Are you who the person you're looking for is looking for? So, as business owners, we all have our ideal prospects. We all have our ideal clients. And so, what we know is we know the types of persons that we want to work with and work for, right? Like, we like the ones who are going to do the work. We like the ones who have the money. We like the ones who listen to us. We like the ones who go out and hustle after the results. We love those particular clients. And so, what we do is we spend a lot of time working on our client prospectus, making sure that we have our ideal client avatar. And so, that's the person we're looking for.
Okay?
That's the client we're looking for. That's the prospect we're looking for. But I want to flip the script today and I want to ask you, are you who that particular client is looking for? Are you who the person you're looking for is looking for? Because so, If you spend all your time worrying about your prospect, you may find the ideal client, but they may look at you and say, you know what, you ain't the person I'm looking for. And so I want to spend a little bit of time today on helping you elevate who you are and your, your visibility. So when your ideal prospect runs across you, they're like, okay, this is who, this is who I want. So first, let's talk a little bit about what people want in a coach. Okay. The first thing that you have to know is that anyone who gets coaching, they're looking to trade. They're looking to trade their set of circumstances for what you have. Okay. They're looking to trade their set of circumstances for what you have. Okay. So if you're in the fitness industry and you're not fit and you're not trained and you're not disciplined, They're probably not going to hire you because they're like, okay, if you got the result, then I want the result. If you're in the business world and you're broke, okay, and you can't rub 2 nickels together and you're trying to teach people how to make a million bucks, they're probably not going to listen to you because they would not be willing to trade their life for yours, okay? Or their circumstances for your circumstances. So, the first thing that you have to know is that they want to trade, okay? That's why they hire a coach. And we typically hire people who have been or are where we want to get to. Okay, and if you don't understand that about yourself, then you don't really understand coaching, and you need to go back and dive in into the dynamics of that because you have to be able to fix that. So when you're doing social media, um, you have to, uh, portray the life that people want. But there's, there's an extreme to that as well. We're going to get in, get into that a little bit. But you have to know first and foremost that as a coach, if you're who the person you're looking for is looking for, they're looking to trade their set of circumstances, for your, for your set of circumstances. So I want you to take some time to think about, like, how do people view me? How do people see me? What is their perception of me? Do I look real? Do I look authentic? Do I look vulnerable? Do I look successful? Do I look like I've got the results that they want to go after? Or do I look douchebaggy? Do I look fake? Do I look, uh, glamoured up? Do I, do I look untrustable? How do you show up? How do you look On camera. Okay, so I want you to do some work on that. So go back and audit your social media and look at the posts that you're putting. Is that the— is that something that people would want? Is that something that people would follow? Would they be willing to trade what they have for what you have? So are you who the person you're looking for? So number one, you have to know that they're wanting— they're wanting to trade. Okay, number 2, number 2. They want someone who can articulate what they already know but cannot articulate.
Okay?
So, they're looking for someone who can articulate what they already know but cannot articulate. Okay? So, how many times have you like, yeah, that's exactly what I'm thinking.
Okay?
I can't tell you how many times as a coach when I go on teaching people and they're like, God, you just have a way of saying that. Right? And it makes sense because I've sort of learned how to articulate things that you already know, but you aren't really sure how to articulate it. So you got to put some time behind that. You have to put some time behind how you're showing up online and what— how you're speaking and how you're talking and, and what do you communicate on a sales call. And if you're not articulating anything, um, that they know but can't articulate on your sales call, then the chances of purchasing from you is relatively low. And so you have to go into that understanding, into that mindset that says, I need to be intelligent enough and have studied my, my product enough and studying my clients enough that I could now articulate things that they already know but can't articulate. Because when you tell them and you vet— when you, when you tell them things like that, it makes perfect sense to them. They begin sending you as an expert and they start paying you. So number one, you have to know that they're going to trade their set of circumstances for your set of circumstances. And number two, they're looking for someone who can articulate what they know But can't articulate. Number 3. Okay, so are you who the person you're looking for is, uh, looking for? Number 3, um, do you have a logical and linear process that moves people from where they are to where they want to go? Do you have a logical and linear process that moves people from where they are to where they want to go? So in other words, the person that you're looking for, they're able to speak on with clarity and with expertise. They're, they're able to speak on the solution that you know you need, okay? And because they're able to speak on it, not just articulate what you know that they don't know, but they're able to speak on it. So they're able to say, listen, if you're trying to get more traffic, here's exactly what you need to do. Hey, listen, if you're trying to do XYZ, here's exactly what you need to do. And as you begin to, to step up on that platform and you begin speaking to them and speaking through your logical linear process and logical linear pathway, it elevates you as an expert. And they're like, okay, this could be someone that I really want. So number one, they're looking to trade their circumstances for your circumstances. Number 2, they're looking for someone who can articulate what they know but cannot articulate. And number 3, they're looking for someone who has a logical and linear path to be able to get them to where they where they want to go. Number 4, number 4, unique mechanism. Unique mechanism. They're looking for someone who has something, an ingredient inside of their product or program that gives them hope that this time would be better than last time. Okay, that's what they're looking for. Okay, so Tony Horton with P90X, okay, um, he went into the health and fitness space, into the workout space, very saturated market. And he, he went through this process. Now watch this formula, okay? He went through the process. He says, okay, what are they trying to do? So write this formula down. What are they trying to do? Okay, what's stopping them from getting there? Okay, what should they be doing? And what would happen if they did it? So he just said a little 4-step process. What are they doing? Okay, what's stopping them? Or why do they want to do it? What's stopping them from getting it? And what should they do? A little 4-step process. You can add a 5th one in there if you want that says, okay, what do they want to do? Okay, why do they want to do it? The, the, then you, then you could put what else have they tried? So what are their alternative vehicles? What should they do? And then, uh, why should they do it? So you could go through a little process. But here's what he did that gave people so much hope. He said, you know what you're trying to do? You're trying to get shredded. Okay, you're trying to get shredded and you've tried this mechanism and this mechanism and this mechanism and this mechanism and this mechanism to get shredded. And what you find is when you first start working out, you see results, but then after a while your body begins plateauing. So what you really need— and here's his unique mechanism— what you really need is you need muscle confusion. You need to confuse your muscles so every time you work out, your muscles think it's the first time they've worked out. So he went in and he created this unique mechanism that he was able to articulate clearly to his particular audience, and it made him, you know, $100 million. Okay, it's the unique mechanism. What are you trying to do? Why are you trying to do it? What should— and, and, and here's what you should be doing. Here is your unique mechanism. Here's what's different about my program and product than every other coaching program out on the market. So they're looking for someone who's got a unique mechanism, an ingredient that when they communicate that, it communicates to your prospects that this time could be better than next time. So our unique mechanism inside of Elite CEO, like at the mastermind level, is our CCM, our Conversion Conversation Method. Okay? It's a unique and proprietary system that we've created to be able to go from idea to money very, very, very quickly doing organic outreach. Okay? And we have a very proprietary way of doing it. That's our unique mechanism in that particular system. Okay. And then what happens is, is people want to learn that mechanism. So they come in, they pay us a lot of money in Elite CEO to learn that mechanism, and then they implement that mechanism and they make money. Okay. So they're looking for someone who has a unique mechanism. So let's recap. Are you who the person you're looking for is looking for? So in other words, they're looking to trade their circumstances for yours. Number 2, they're looking for someone who can articulate what they know but cannot articulate. Number 3, they're looking for someone who's put thought behind a logical and linear process that can move them from where they are to where they want to go. And they're looking for someone with a unique mechanism, someone with an ingredient inside of their program that gives them the hope that next time or this time could be better than, than last time. Number 5. Okay, number 5, they're looking for someone connectable. They're looking for someone connectable. They want to make a connection with a coach. Okay? And so, when you look at this, then the easiest way to connect with someone is to have a story, is to have a story. So, when I do coaching and I stand up and I tell my connect stories, I attract so many people to me, not because they want to trade my lifestyle, not just because I can articulate things they can't articulate, not just because I have a logical linear process, not just because I have a unique mechanism, but they can connect with me as a human. They, they relate to my story. They connect with me. They want to go further with me. They, they look at me and say, you may not know everything, you may not have everything I'm looking for in a coach, but I connect with you, and that's the most important. Okay, so they want to connect. They want to, they want to talk with someone, um, that they can connect with. So you have to get really good at your story and understand that your story is designed to connect your prospects to you. And if you even put thought behind your story, you need to go back and put and put some thought behind your, your story. Number 6, number 6, okay, they, they're looking— the person they're looking for, um, has celebrations, okay, has celebrations. So in other words, they have been able to get other people clients, or it should be they've been able to get other clients success. That's what I'm trying to say. And they celebrate those successes. Okay, so what I mean by that is most— not most, several coaches make the program all about them. I did this, I did this, I did this, I did this. Look how much money this made for that person. Look how much money this made for that person. Look how much money they made for that person. God, my program is great. Look at this testimonial, this testimonial, this. But— and that's all good. You know what's better? Celebrations. Celebrations. So let's say that Marion was, you know, in our program for the 4 months and, and she made $100,000. Let's just make it up, okay? And I go on and I celebrate Marion. I highlight her. I talk about her progress. I talk about her story. I talk about where she was, where she is now. We talk about the hard things that she had to do in order to get there. And I platform her and I elevate her and I celebrate her. Okay, what that does is it makes me look better than when I celebrate me. So you need to celebrate the wins of your clients and celebrate the wins of your clients publicly because your prospects are looking for someone with celebrations. That's what they're looking for. So when, like, you see all these plaques on my wall back here— I've got some more over here— okay, when you look at all these plaques on my wall, these represent money milestones that have been earned, right? So If I just go on and brag on, look at this, I made this much money and this much money and this much money and this much money, pat myself on the back, that's wonderful. That's all about me. But if I say, hey, here's a picture of me with Marianne and she just got her first million-dollar award, I'm celebrating you, Marianne. Now this picture, okay, that's what we're talking about. They're looking for people with celebrations. Were you able to get other people the results and do you celebrate those particular results? So you need to think about the celebration inside of your business because that's what people looking for. One of the big shifts that I made with one of my clients here not too long ago, um, and so she had an academy where she taught people how to build funnels. And we were, we were talking through a process, and she had a 9-part linear process on how to build funnels. And when people came in, I noticed that she had them sign a certificate, an all-in certificate, and then they went to social media and they held this thing up and they posted. She got tons and tons and tons of traffic. She goes, but the problem is, is once they start, then I don't get any more traffic. And so what we did is we took her 9 pillars. I said, every time they graduate a pillar, I want you to give them a badge, an award for graduating that pillar. I want you to celebrate them. I want you to publicly acknowledge them on your social media, publicly acknowledge them in the Facebook group, because then what they do is they go now share that, okay? And then now more and more people see that. So then what happens, this particular person took her business from about $10,000, $20,000 a month to 7 figures per month. That's a lot of money. Yes, I said 7 figures. You're talking about $10 million per year company now, mainly because of celebrations, because people want to connect with someone and they want someone who celebrates them, right? Because the idea is if you're celebrating with people, they, they see results. What's rewarded is repeated. What's rewarded is repeated. And so as you reward people for the progress they're making inside your program, not only does it elevate you as a rock star, but also they go public with that kind of stuff and the retention rates increase, etc. So let's recap. So number 1, are you who the person you're looking for is looking for? Do you— they're looking to trade their set of circumstances for yours. Number 2, they're looking for someone who can articulate what they know but cannot articulate. Number 3, they're looking for someone who's got a logical and linear process to give them a result. Number 4, they're looking for someone who's got a unique mechanism, an ingredient inside of their program that gives them hope that this time can be better than Last time. Number 5, they're looking for someone that they can connect with. Okay, they're looking for someone that they can connect with. Okay, so they want to know your story, they want to relate with your story. Number 6, they want someone who celebrates, celebrates victories and celebrates wins, and they've gotten results. They've gotten results for their client. Number 7. Number 7, they're looking for someone who's connected. Okay, so just as they want a connection, they're looking for someone who's connected. So in other words, who The people that you rub shoulders with, right? Your little Rolodex of people that you rub shoulders with, they want access to that. Okay? So for instance, so when I was selling my agency services, right? The fact that I built 13 funnels for Russell Brunson and I built funnels for Tony Robbins and I built funnels for Liz Benny and I built funnels for Dan Henry, I built funnels for Perry Belcher. Okay? As I show those connections with people, My prospects would be like, well, dude, if you're good enough for Russell Brunson, you're good enough for me. Well, shoot, if you know Tony Robbins, then I want to know you, right? And so, so they're looking for someone that's connected. And so one of the things that we struggle with as coaches is we like to stay in our own little bubble, okay? And we're laser-focused and we don't get a whole lot done. You need to connect with people. This is why events are so powerful, okay? Events are super powerful. We just finished an event here in Phoenix yesterday and we have 40 of our clients show up and those 40 people are like, Why are there not 200 people here? This is the greatest thing we've ever been to because they're able to make connections with people. Okay. And, and, and those connections with other people who've been successful more than them gives them credibility and gives them validity. And then when they post that kind of stuff on, on their social media, they're like, God, this person is connected. There must be something right. The douchebag level decreases when they see you're connected. With other people, right? Because most douchebags hide in a closet, and you're not hiding in a closet. You're coming out and you're connected. So number 1, they're looking to trade their circumstances for you. Number 2, they're looking for someone who can articulate what they know but cannot articulate. Number 3, they're looking for someone who has a logical linear process to get them from where they are to where they want to go. Number 4, they're looking for someone with a unique mechanism, a secret ingredient inside your program that gives them hope that this time would be better than last time. So just as Tony Horton had muscle memory, what's your unique mechanism? Number 5, they're looking for someone that they can connect with. They're looking for someone who has a story that they can connect with. Number 6, they're looking for a coach that celebrates the wins of their particular client clients. Number 7, they're looking for someone who's connected with people bigger than themselves. Number 8, number 8, they're looking for someone who's vulnerable. They're looking for someone who's vulnerable. There's a direct correlation between vulnerability. Vulnerability and openness. Okay, when I become vulnerable online, I'm sharing some vulnerability, I become accessible. Openness is not the word I was looking for— accessible. There's a direct correlation between vulnerability and accessibility. Okay, so as you're vulnerable with people, they believe that you're accessible, and they now can be vulnerable with you. When you just have no problems and your life is perfect, and you tell people how perfect your life is, then what that does is there's a direct correlation between between arrogance and resistance. And so people begin resisting you when you're arrogant. So the more vulnerable you can be, the more, the more accessible you become. And that's number 9. Number 9. Number 9. They're looking for someone who's accessible.
Okay?
They're looking for someone who's accessible.
Okay?
So I don't care how much money you spend on a coaching program. At the end of the day, you want to access— you want to access the guru. That's why our events are so powerful, because like Tanner, the CEO of our company, He spends so much time with our people at our events. Like, super impressed. Like, he comes, he shows up, he gets in, he digs in, he gets down and dirty, he does one-on-ones. He just spends time with you guys. And that's what people are looking for in a coach. They're looking for someone who's accessible, okay? Someone that they believe that they have access to, that they're not just going to be a number, okay? And that's super impressive.
Yeah.
That's super important to people. So are you who the person you look for? Are you vulnerable and are you accessible? Okay, now there's a wrong way to do that as well. So the wrong way is when you undercharge for your accessibility. When you undercharge for accessibility, then they do not platform you. They don't believe that you're honorable, so to speak. Okay, and then they sort of, that's when the complaints come out. That's when they sort of just run all over you. Okay, so you have to be cautious with your accessibility, but they want someone who is accessible. Okay, and then finally, number 10. Okay, so are you who the person you're looking for is looking for? Number 10, are you disciplined? Are you disciplined? They want someone who does the work. Okay, they want someone who does the work. And discipline is probably, uh, the wrong word right here. Probably the right word is trustworthy. So I'm going to shift it. I'm going to, I'm going to make that the word trustworthy. Trustworthy is really what they're looking for. So trustworthy. So if you're disciplined, then it shows that you can be trusted. It shows that you do what you say you're going to do. Okay, trustworthy. Do you do what you say you're going to do? If you tell someone you're going to follow up with them, do you follow up with them? If you tell someone you're going to send them something, do you send them something? Are you trustworthy? Okay, are you trustworthy? So are you who the person you're looking for is looking for? These are 10 characteristics that the person you're looking for is looking for. So just as we look at our prospects and we say, this is what makes a perfect prospect, your prospects are saying, this is what makes a perfect coach. This is what makes a perfect coach. And if you have those things, the chances of you making more sales is drastically higher. If you don't have those things, it's going to go down. If you're, if you're accidental about them, you may hit 2 or 3 of these, but you have to be intentional about those. You have to do the work on all of those. So if you're like me and you just scroll to the end, let me recap this. Are you who the person you're looking for is looking for? Well, there's 10 characteristics. Number 1, they're looking for someone that they can trade their circumstances for, for the coach's circumstances. So in other words, you have to have a lifestyle that they crave and they want and they want to idolize, or the end that they idolize and they want to buy. Number 2, they're looking for someone who can articulate what they know but cannot articulate. Number 3, they're looking for someone with a logical linear process to move them where they are to where they want to go. Number 4, they're looking for someone who has the— has a secret ingredient or a unique mechanism inside their program that gives them hope that this time can be better than last time. Number 5, they're looking to connect with their coach. They're looking for someone with a story that they can relate with and connect with. Number 6, they're looking for a coach who celebrates the wins of their client. Number 7, they're looking for a coach who's connected with people bigger than they are. Number 8, they're looking for a coach who's vulnerable. Number— and what we said is the more vulnerable— there's a direct correlation between vulnerability and accessibility. They believe that if you're vulnerable, that you, you'll be accessible. And that's number 9. They're looking for someone who's accessible, someone that they can, they can pick their brain with and get to know a little bit. And number 10, they're looking for someone who's trustworthy. I do what I say I'm going to do. I'm disciplined. I'm disciplined in my thought. I'm disciplined in my action. I'm disciplined. So those are the characteristics that I want you to process and put inside of your life to make sure that you have everything that You need to be the perfect person that your perfect client is looking for. All right, guys, I hope that was helpful. I'd love to be able to workshop that with you right now. What kind of thoughts, input, questions do you have? You guys can unmute your mics. Excuse me. Turn on your camera.
Hi, Chad.
Anything I can help you guys with?
I got nothing.
Yeah, go ahead. Who's speaking? Is that Jonah?
Oh, I was just saying I got nothing. I was just listening.
Oh, okay, okay, okay.
All right. Hey Chad, I got a question. Yeah, it's Ashton. Um, Do you have, or are there any like trainings in regards to, um, how to go about to find that, that, uh, you know, that target client?
Your ideal target client? Yeah. What program are you in?
Uh, fitness.
In fitness program? No. What program? Like you're in Next Level Mastermind in ELA?
I'm in, I'm in, uh, ELA.
Okay. Yeah. So reach out to Coach Heather and see if she can give you, see if she can give you access to the Offer Avatar training.
Okay.
Yeah.
Okay. Yeah.
Thank you.
Yeah. Have them give you access to that. Okay.
Okay.
All right, guys. Anybody else? Anything else I can help you guys with? Well, guys, it's Monday. Yes, go ahead.
So if I'm targeting what, like, I guess for my, for my social media page, I'm trying to cater it so that it looks like the avatar that I'm targeting. And if, if we want to target more professional women, for example, but to be a little bit more badass, but also, you know, with health and fitness, I guess, what recommendations do you have or what questions should I be asking myself?
If you want to target professional women to help them be more healthy and more badass?
Yeah.
Well, the first thing—
A little bit edgy, a little bit more edgy. So I have more like black and white.
Is that your brand? Is your brand edgy? Okay, so what the first thing I would do is I would find someone that I could pattern in after. So I would look at a Brené Brown, I would look at a Joyce Meyer, I would look at a Mel Robbins, and just go study some of their stuff to figure out like, what are they doing? Because they're— they, they sort of do that kind of thing. So I'd go see what they're doing. Second thing, guys, I would do is I would take that training that we did at the event this past weekend, and I would get my expert persona down. I would go into AI, you do those prompts that I did, you can get your expert persona down and make sure that it's, it's everything that you want. Okay. And then I think the third thing I would do is I would just start being the person that I want to attract, because remember, they're looking to trade their circumstances for yours. So I would just start being the person that I wanted, that I wanted to attract.
Yeah.
Okay. And then, oh, this is gonna sound a little bit silly, but playing into the badass. So like, I'm more of an adrenaline junkie. I ride motorcycles, you know, bungee jump, all that. Should I include more of that even though it's not technically fitness? Or like, how often would I include that if I do include it?
Very.
Okay.
It's so different.
Okay.
I mean, imagine, imagine doing the training on a motorcycle. Like, that would get eyeballs.
Yeah, that's freaking true.
Right? You're jumping out of an airplane and you're like, you know, hey guys, I got this brand new lead magnet for you. Get it, get it. Right? Something like that.
Wait, actually, so George, um, Steph, uh, Narissa and I are actually planning on going bungee jumping. I convinced them to all go bungee jumping with me.
Do it.
So I— that's a freaking amazing time to do that. Okay. All right. Awesome. Thank you. That's very helpful.
Yeah. Have some— get mic'd up, have a camera on the ground with a really good lens on it. It can follow you from top to bottom and give your freaking lead magnet away.
Oh shit. Okay.
While you're falling. While you're falling.
Okay. I'm gonna do that.
It would be so much— it would be so exciting. It's not, hi everybody, this is Yaz. If you guys want my lead magnet, click the button below. Right? It's gonna be so much better.
Okay, yeah, that's that's freaking amazing. That's a great idea.
I am not gonna go bungee jumping with you.
Why not?
You should do it.
It's so much fun.
You can ride me on the back of a motorcycle anytime.
See, I don't know how to two up. Like, I don't know how to have someone on the back of my bike. Then you can't do that because it's a sports bike.
Okay. Yeah.
Okay. But you can. I can teach you how to ride.
Well, I could probably figure it out. So, all right, anything else, guys? All right, awesome, guys. ELA, make sure you guys— 4 calls in the next 30 days with your coach. Show up to every Monday, Thursday. Show up to every pod. Get to do the work, and we will see you guys very soon. God bless you guys. We'll talk to you later.
Thank you so much, Chad.
You're welcome, guys.

Why Interested Prospects Don’t Buy, and How to Move Them From “I Want This” to “I’m Ready”

Knocking Down the Three Big Limiting Beliefs That Keep Prospects From Saying Yes
