In this segment, Charles Leikauf outlines why certain e‑commerce niches are especially difficult to manage from an inventory perspective. He explains that products with a large number of SKUs and variations—such as apparel with multiple colors, sizes, and inseam lengths, and seasonal jewelry with numerous styles and body‑placement options—create combinatorial complexity. These items often have short life cycles and high return rates, further complicating stock planning. Leikauf also highlights perishable or used‑product categories like skincare, where items can become unsellable after being applied or opened. Overall, the discussion emphasizes how high SKU count, rapid fashion trends, seasonal themes, and product spoilage collectively strain inventory management systems.

One of the most challenging niches for e-commerce as far as inventory goes. Yeah, you have apparel because you have like different sizes and colors and SKUs and whatever else and lots of variation. Jewelry too, right? Because say you're buying, you know, it's October and you're getting pumpkin-themed everything. We've got pumpkin-themed nose rings. So you got the nose rings on the side, nose rings in the front. You got the eyebrow rings, you got the earrings, you've got whatever this piece of cartilage that you pierce here. You've got belly button rings, nipple rings, you know, rings for your nether region, right? If you want ghosts or pumpkins, you gotta get that for the whole set. Just like with apparel, right? Yeah. having, you know, purple shorts, right? Do you have the purple shorts? You have the green shorts? You got the blue shorts? What about the sizes of the shorts? And then what about the inseam length of the shorts? Well, what if neon shorts that are a 5-inch inseam for men go out of style? Well, you're not gonna be able to have those. And you've got those in 28, 32, 30, 36, 34, 38, 42, 48, however, however, you know, thick our customers are, right? And so the idea is, is for things that have lots of SKUs, lots of variations, don't have a long life cycle, and have lots of a high return rate make inventory management a lot harder. So that'll be your one-off smaller jewelry or, you know, cheaper jewelry like body jewelry. That'll be your apparel. That'll be things like that. There's also issues with the type of inventory that spoils, right? Like skincare, if it's already been applied or used or worn. So those are some of the things that are more challenging from an inventory perspective.
