The excerpt is a single-speaker talk/presentation (labeled SPEAKER A) in which the speaker explains the "conscious futurist spiral" — a model of stages people move through when thinking about the future (survival, responsible, invested, conscious, transcendent). The speaker describes the spiral as dynamic (people can move up and down), gives examples (e.g., COVID), and notes its usefulness for understanding and aligning perspectives when working with others and for developing future-ready thinking.

Do you know that when you think about the future, you're actually on a conscious futurist spiral? This spiral is a useful way for us to think about how we move into the future, who we're responsible for, how much capacity we have to think about what is coming next. So let's have a look. The very first spiral that we see is one of survival. We're just trying to get through the week, through the day. Imagine what we were like during COVID times. The next part of the spiral is responsible. Now we're actually thinking beyond just this week or this month. We're thinking beyond just ourselves and our family, and we're being responsible towards the future. Once we've achieved that, we can go to the invested stage where we really are thinking intentionally about the future and what we want to create. Once we've succeeded at the invested stage, we can go on to the conscious stage, and a conscious futurist is someone who aligns their values and their beliefs and their lives with what they want to see happen in the future, a more preferred future. And beyond the conscious futurist spiral, we also have transcendent. That is where the investment that you make in this world way exceeds your lifespan. Unlike traditional models that are kind of that step-lock system where you can get to a stage and stay there until you're ready to move to the next one. The spiral is constantly moving, and that means you can be moving up the spiral, and you can also slide down. It might be some bad news, it might be some ill health, and you slide down that spiral, and you know that you have to survive again. Then you have to be responsible and invested, and we can give ourselves grace to go up and down that spiral, knowing that we have been higher in the past, and we will get back there again. It's also a very useful tool when working with other people to consider where you are on the spiral and where they might be. If those aren't in some sort of alignment, then the conversation is just not going to work. So thinking about the future as a conscious futurist means that you are developing thinking that is fit for the future.
