In this concluding video of the 7 Futures Competencies series, Charlotte Kemp reflects on ethical decision‑making as the true legacy of leaders. She argues that legacy is less about tangible achievements and more about the future possibilities opened—or closed—by our everyday choices. Small decisions (the "e" events) accumulate over time, shaping culture, trust, and the environment for future generations, much like the butterfly or grandfather paradoxes in science‑fiction narratives. Kemp frames leadership as stewardship, emphasizing responsibility for systems and people beyond traditional performance metrics. She challenges viewers to consider the future they are complicit in creating and invites them to complete the 7 Futures Competencies assessment and share stories of how these competencies have impacted organizations, offering confidentiality. Throughout, she reinforces the themes of foresight, insight, and transformation as essential for navigating future pressures.

Day 21 of our 7 competencies, and we're looking at ethical decision-making and the future that we're leaving behind. In the past, we used to think that legacy is, is what you have built, something tangible. But perhaps if we change our thinking and consider more about what our decisions have made possible, what roads or scenarios have opened up because of our decisions, who has benefited, could someone have a better life or a better future because of decisions that we've made today? Even if we'll never know, the long-term ethical consequences of our leadership and influence is our true legacy. Decisions accumulate over time. We tend to look at big events with a capital E as the times when futures were made. But really, it's all of those small letter e events, those small decisions, or those compromises taken or not taken that create the environment for a better future. what feels small today contributes to patterns that shape experience and culture and trust into the future. I love science fiction and time travel stories, and one of the main tropes is called the grandfather paradox. It's the idea of what if I go back in time and I do something that accidentally kills my grandfather? Will I ever have been born? Will I cease to exist? What if I stand on a butterfly and the consequences of that create a completely different timeline. We're eager enough in science fiction to assign huge consequences to small actions, but we don't do the same for those small actions today and the huge consequences that will come. If those decisions and actions are made with integrity and a belief in the future, then those ripples will be of benefit to others instead of to their detriment. Leadership and influence is stewardship. Over time. We take nothing with us when we are gone, but we do leave behind what we have created. Leadership is not just about delivering results. It's about caring for those systems and people and the future that you influence. And that goes way beyond traditional metrics. Those are our ethical decision-making checkpoints. To challenge your thinking to move from intention to impact, ask yourself this question: What future am I complicit in creating? Thank you for spending time with me on this journey exploring these 7 competencies. I truly believe that the more we understand them and work with them, the easier it will be for us to adjust and respond to all of the other pressures and requirements that the future will put onto us, all of the new skills and techniques and platforms that we need to learn or negotiate with. So let's continue this conversation. If you haven't yet, please do the 7 Futures Competencies assessment so that you can get a report and you can get a better idea of how you respond to these particular 7 issues. And please send me any stories that you might have of where you've seen these competencies either help an organization or help a leader to make a better decision, or where it has been very evident that these competencies were not in place. I would love to hear those stories and I can keep confidentiality. As always, I'm Charlotte Kemp, Futures Alchemist, helping you to develop your thinking fit for the future, and that is foresight, insight, and transformation.
