The speaker gives practical advice on monetizing public speaking, contrasting two approaches—using speaking to sell products (books, courses, workshops) via unpaid/showcase opportunities versus being paid for speaking itself—and advising clarity of intention and focused effort when creating content and pursuing engagements.

New speakers, and sometimes even more experienced speakers, are always trying to work out how to monetize their speech, how to, how to make money from what they speak about. And I think this one point really helps us to clarify what we're trying to do when we're trying to monetize our speaking. Do you speak so that you can sell something, or do you give things away so that you can get a paid speaking engagement? Those are 2 very different approaches. So would you take an unpaid speaking engagement? We never say free, it's a showcase. Would you take an unpaid showcase opportunity to speak so that you can sell your books, your online courses, your interventions, your facilitation, your workshops, your training, some other kind of deliverable of the work and the value that you do? Or Would you give away books and promote small mini courses online and put content out so that you can get a paid speaking engagement, you know, one great big fat check for that speaking engagement? Are you using your speaking to market your products, or are you using your products to sell your product of speaking? Getting that separate, separate in your mind, getting that clear is really helpful because then you know what you're trying to do. You're not just putting out content and just being happy that you got stuff out there, but you're doing it with intention. They're not mutually exclusive. You can do lots of showcase opportunities, you can sell your other products, and you can still get a paid speaking engagement. But just be clear about what your intention is as you're doing that work, as you're putting that content out there, because it will really help you just to focus your efforts a little bit more and not feel quite as scattered as you were beforehand.
