This is a YouTube video titled "Defining The Role of the CRO" created in March 2024, featuring a monologue or talk focused on clarifying the role and responsibilities of a Chief Revenue Officer (CRO). The speaker discusses the ambiguity around the CRO title, emphasizing the CRO's oversight of all revenue-related functions including sales, marketing, and customer success, and the importance of resolving revenue misalignment in B2B businesses to build effective revenue engines. The content is presented as a single-speaker explanation rather than a conversation.
The question that I'm trying to answer with this whole business is what does a CRO really do? How do you define a Chief Revenue officer? And because of all the ambiguity in the marketplace about it, the unfortunate reality is you could probably get five or six different answers. So there has to be some authority to make that decision. And I'd like it to be the CRO Collective. I think the title of our company indicates that we kind of have carved out a place where we can do that. And so for the purposes of that, the Chief Revenue officer role is defined as the C suite executive who oversees all revenue, revenue related functions of the business. And that means the customer facing parts of the business, sales, marketing, customer success, they have nominal leadership over all three of those parts of the business. I'd even say in product led companies, they also have a dotted line to product because it's a key part of the way in which, you know, those companies go to market and that make this distinction mainly because what a CRO is not is ahead of sales. And that's what unfortunately most CROs are deployed as head of sales. So I think that's the first thing is to make that clear definition. And the second part of that question I usually get is, well, what difference does it make? Like, what's so important about that? Like, why define this like that? Like why can't I just hire a head of sales and call to CRO? Well, here's why. Because the big problem that we're really solving is revenue misalignment. And revenue misalignment is the disease of all B2B businesses. As, as B2B businesses reach a level of operational complexity, silos are created between marketing, sales and customer success. There's, this is an inevitable reality. And if that's not resolved, companies will not scale effectively. And the Chief Revenue Officer's job is to solve that problem. And if you deploy a Chief Revenue officer properly, it will solve that problem faster and more effectively and build what we call revenue engines which allow you to become much more profitable, much more predictable and much more consistent in the way that you get customers and maintain customers.
