How to ask questions Tip 3 - Consider if this is the right time to ask

Timing matters when you ask questions. Wait for designated Q&A periods, avoid interrupting sessions, and save detailed questions for later project phases. If your question only affects one person, ask them one-on-one after the group meeting ends.

How to ask a question tip number 3: consider if this is the right time to ask. When we ask questions, we're often driven by our need and our timeframe, but not every situation is the right time to ask. Now, if you don't consider the timeframes when asking a question, you may interrupt a session. You may ask questions too soon in a process. Or you may waste the time of other people that are in the room. So, how can you ask a question at the right time? How can you consider whether it's the right time? Well, first of all, think about the situation. Are you in a situation with a defined structure to receive information with a question period at the end? If you are, wait until the end to ask your question. Or if it's really urgent, raise your hand, but don't just ask the question. If your question is about a process, perhaps you're running or involved in a project, and the project has a kickoff, a planning section, and an execution piece. If you have a very detailed question about a risk or a topic later on in this process, it might not be the right thing to ask at the planning at the beginning. Consider whether you should wait until later to ask that question. And finally, if you're in a group session and you have a question, If your question doesn't relate to or impact everybody in the group, it might not be the right time to ask it. Because if you end up asking a one-on-one question with somebody, you're wasting the time of everybody else in the group, or you could be wasting their time. It may be better to wait until after the session and speak to an individual one-on-one to get the information that you want. The reason for the timing there is you're being sensitive to the time that you may be wasting for other people. So, if you want to ask questions clearly, and you want to ask good questions, consider whether this is the right time to ask.
