How to facilitate a conversation, tip number 8: Pay attention to who's talking. When you're the facilitator, you not only need to listen to people because it's polite and the right thing to do, but you also need to pay attention to who's talking to make sure that they are helping the conversation move forwards. Now, if you don't pay attention to who is talking, you might miss out on the fact that they're not the right person for this topic. There may be someone else in the room who is more qualified to answer a question. If you don't pay attention to who's talking and how long they're talking for, you may find somebody takes up a lot more of the meeting than is necessary, or they drown out other voices, or that we run out of time and not achieve the purpose. So when you're talking, when you're facilitating a meeting, pay attention to who is talking and think about whether they're the right person to talk on the right topic at the right time. And if they're not, step in and invite somebody else to join the conversation who is the right person to answer that topic or to help move things forward to achieve the purpose of the meeting.
