How to facilitate a meeting Tip 6 - Be open to adding a new topic

A meeting facilitator should stay flexible when valuable new topics come up. Either decide unilaterally to shift focus or ask the group to vote on including it, weighing the new discussion against your original goals.

How to facilitate a meeting. Tip number 6. Be open to adding a new topic. Whenever you set up and run a meeting, there's a specific goal, purpose, or outcome that you're trying to achieve. But during the course of the conversation, new topics might come up. Now those topics can distract from your original purpose, but they might be valuable. They might even be more valuable than what you set out to achieve. So when these new topics come up, be open to adding them into the discussion or even replacing the original purpose of the meeting. Now to do this, you have 2 approaches. One, you can make that decision and say, I think this topic is more important or more valuable. Let's spend time on that. The second option is to ask the group. Identify the fact that a new topic has come up. That we're trying to achieve this. We're now talking about something different. And then ask the team, is it important? Should we talk about this instead of the original topic? Do we want to include this in the discussion? And let the group determine whether it's valuable, appropriate, and whether it's worth risking not achieving the original output of the meeting. So if you want to facilitate a good meeting, don't be completely rigid to the original plan. Be open to adding new topics.
