Chris Fenning says pitch the benefits first, not how it works. People care that your idea makes money or solves a problem, not the technical details behind it. State the value proposition early and skip the lengthy explanation of construction.

How to pitch an idea. Tip number 5. Talk about what your idea does, not how it does it. When we give presentations, we tend to fill that time with how our idea works. What is it built of? What's the technology? How the amazing magic all comes together. That is less valuable to the audience. The audience cares a lot less about that. They care more about what the idea does. And what does it do for them and the things they care about? When you pitch an idea, you need to focus on what your idea idea does. How do you do this? You state it very early in the presentation. Hey, I've got an idea to build a new product and it's going to generate new revenues in a market we're not already in. I have an idea to fix bugs in our current system. It will take away some of the pain that you're experiencing in our reporting system. Whatever it is that your idea delivers, talk about that first. Talk about what your idea does and not about how it does it.
