How to talk about project issues, tip number 11: If you don't know what to do about the issue, ask. When an issue happens on the work that we're doing, we want to try and solve it. It can be difficult, embarrassing, or awkward to talk to another person or a manager or supervisor and say we don't know what to do. That may feel bad, but the worst thing to do is to do nothing, to wait, and to not ask for help. Now, if you don't know the answer, but you don't ask for help, you're going to cause delays. And the longer it takes to respond to an issue, the worse that issue may become, the worse those consequences may become, and the greater the amount of effort is required to fix that issue and clear up after whatever has happened. So how do you do this? How do you make it clear if you're not sure what to do? Well, when you're describing the issue, you say, this is what's happened, this is the impact. I'm not sure what to do next. Can you help? It's a simple thing to ask. It's okay to admit when you don't know what to do, and you're going to get that other person helping you come up with a solution to what that issue is. So when you are talking about project issues and you don't know what to do, make sure you ask for help.
