How to talk about project issues tip 8: Say what happens if you do nothing

When describing a project problem, always say what happens if nobody fixes it. Without this, people either ignore a critical issue or waste time on something that doesn't matter. Be specific about consequences, whether catastrophic or minor.

How to talk about project issues, tip number 8: say what happens if you do nothing. An issue is occurring that might make us feel like we have to do something or somebody needs to respond. On occasions, they might not need to do anything. In other situations, doing nothing may be disastrous and may cause a terrible effect. So when you're talking to someone about an issue on a project, you need to make it clear Whether or not— what happens if you do nothing? If there's no action that's taken? Now, if you don't do this, if you don't say what happens when no action is taken, the audience might either assume they don't need to do anything and it will all be fine, or they could assume they do need to take action. There's a problem. I need to do something to fix it. Let's do something to make this better. Which might not be needed. So they could waste time. They could spend effort doing something that isn't necessary. Perhaps the issue will resolve itself, or perhaps it's minor and doesn't require a lot of effort or energy to do anything about. So how do you do this? Well, when you're talking about your issue early on, say whether or not an action is needed, and then also say, well, if we don't do anything, this is what happens. Make a comment about if we do nothing, this is terrible. All the systems will shut down. We'll lose $1 million a day. Or if there isn't a problem, you could say, well, if we do nothing, this is actually going to solve itself by the end of the week, and it will probably be cheaper to do nothing, and the consequences are very small. Every situation and every issue will be different, but when it comes to describing and explaining the issue, you need to make it clear what happens if you don't do anything.
