How to talk about risks. Tip number 1: know why you're talking about the risk. When we talk about risks, we need to know what we want to happen from the conversation. What's the purpose of talking about it? If we aren't clear on why we're talking about a risk, we run into problems like just talking about why it might happen or consequences and giving a lot of information but not being clear on the reason for the conversation. Risk conversations can be huge. There is a lot to talk about. If you don't know why you're talking about the risk, you could meander in all sorts of different directions. So how do you get clear on what you want to talk about and why you're talking about a risk? Think about what you want to happen after the conversation or as a result of the conversation about that risk. Do you want someone else to take an action? Do you need approval? Are you looking for advice on what to do about the risk? Are you just informing the person to raise their awareness? Whatever it is that you do, you need to make sure that it's clear what you want to happen next, and that tells you why you're talking about the risk. So when you're talking about risks, the first and most important thing you need to do is be clear and know why you are talking about that risk.
