Chris Fenning explains why stakeholder updates should last five to ten minutes. Longer updates cause audiences to lose focus and miss critical information. Focus only on points that impact stakeholders or need their input, skip exhaustive lists and detailed problem descriptions.

How to update stakeholders, tip number 4, keep it short. If your status updates to stakeholders take 5, 10 minutes, the audience isn't going to know what's most important. They're probably going to lose focus and they're not going to get the really key information that you want from them. When you give a status update, you need to keep it short. That helps the audience, but it also helps you. Your time is just as precious as everybody else's. So how do you do this? When you give your status updates, focus on the things that impact them. Make sure that you are summarising your topics and only sticking to items that affect the outcome or things that you need from that audience. Don't give long lists of the work that's been done or describe any particular problems that are being experienced in your work. Whenever you give a status update and whenever you're updating stakeholders, make sure you keep it short.
