How to start a work conversation, tip number 1: make the topic clear. When you start talking, you need to, right at the start, make it clear what the topic of the conversation is going to be. If you don't do this, the other person might be thinking about something different. They may make an assumption that you want to talk about one topic, when actually you want to talk about another. When this happens, the conversation quickly goes off track, and you'll have to repeat some of what you've said, if not all of it. So how do you make the topic clear? Well, in the first sentence, name the topic you want to talk about. Name the project or the situation, or say, hey, I'd like to talk about this customer, or I've got an issue on Project X. By saying in a short number of words what the topic is, you help your audience focus on the one thing that you want to talk about.
