She argues many children’s books lack follow-up educational content, and explains she wants a story about catching fireflies (noting fireflies are endangered) while retaining creative control to support future sequels and learning goals.
I had had this idea in my head to write these children's book stories for years, because reading hundreds of books to my children, I realized there's a big gap in children's literature. It's either, like, Ann Apple Ray. Ann Ray, Ann Ray. And it's these stories that, you know, once it's done, there's. There's nothing to follow up with it. There's no extra education. There's no. Nothing that's intentional for learning purposes. And so, for me, I wanted to write a story about catching fire fireflies. But fireflies are an endangered species, and they only were interested in the one book. And so I wasn't willing to give up my authority on the first book to sacrifice the second and the third that I have in my head. So it can be exactly what I want it to be.
