Existing managers often see new hires as threats because they weren't involved in defining the role. Bring managers together to identify gaps and articulate what skills you need. This early buy-in shows the new hire fills an unmanageable gap, not a threat to their territory.
What would have happened if that leader would have taken 2 hours and put the existing managers in a room and brainstormed what needs to happen, where they have holes and gaps, how to fill them, and what kind of skill set is needed to actually fill those gaps and gotten that buy-in from the very beginning so that when someone new was hired to step into that role, everybody understood why. It wasn't a threat to them. It was a gap that they couldn't possibly cover anymore. Right? It was an issue that they couldn't— they don't have time to deal with. Their areas are probably growing too.
