Diabetes insipidus causes massively increased urine output because the body either doesn't make enough ADH or the kidneys can't respond to it. Remember it with the mnemonic "definitely increased."

Here's a memory check to help you remember diabetes insipidus. You can think, definitely increased. The urine output is definitely increased here in Diabetes Insipidus. And this is because there's not enough adh, or the kidneys aren't responding to that adh, and this causes the kidneys to get rid of too much fluid. So ADH stands for antidiuretic hormone. But when there is less ADH or the kidneys are not responding to it, too much fluid is urinated out into the urine by the kidneys. So when you think of diabetes insipidus, think definitely increase. That urine output is going to be massively increased. If you're struggling with pharmacology in nursing school, be sure to check out the Pharmacology Study system inside the nursing SOS shop.
