EVERYTHING TO KNOW about the Next Gen NCLEX (NGN)!

Christina Rafano and Matthew explain the Next-Generation NCLEX: core nursing content stays the same, but new question formats include highlighting, drop-down menus, and interactive charts. SATA questions now offer partial credit, and lab values appear on-screen instead of requiring memorization.

Deal. Everything that you are learning in nursing school will apply. Right? It's not like they're, It's still what we know about stroke, right? The same care that you would give to a patient now is the same care that you would give to a patient after the ngm. Right? They're not changing the nursing content. Okay. So I just really want you to, to keep that in the back of your mind that it's not as big of a deal as a lot of people maybe think that it is. Hi Caitlyn on YouTube. Little good job, Matt. Congratulations.
Yes, thanks for sticking around with us. We're talking about NGNs.
Okay. Sorry.
As an NG ends as in next generation NCLEX. So thanks for sticking out.
So YouTube. What I was just telling Matthew. Yes, Everywhere. Do you guys have long hair? And then shedding? Seriously, what I was just telling Instagram, our YouTube friends is that nursing content has not changed and nursing content does not change. Right? Like, unless we discover something new, you know, obviously we're research based, evidence based. But like, just because the NCLEX is changing does not mean that nursing content is changing. Okay? So don't freak out. Like everything that you've learned in nursing school up until this point, everything that you're going to continue to learn in nursing school, all of it will help you on the next generation nclex. Okay? It's not like they're taken away or changing the pathophysiology of a disorder. You know, that's not how it works. Okay. So just know like let that give your, your heart a little bit of peace. Okay? To know that what you have learned so far and what you will continue to learn about in nursing school does and will apply on the mgm. Okay.
Yeah. So all the information is the same as just how they're, how they're testing to see if you know the content.
That's it.
And that is all that's changing. So that's really good to know. So we, we hear this all the time, previous lives. The reason why we're talking about it is because people always ask about it is just, just that fact that like people are worried, oh, what's changing, what's happening and all that. So yeah, we just want to kind of calm your minds or calm your minds, calm yourselves. Don't worry about it. Don't worry about too much. Continue studying you doing your critical thinking. Continue going through it. So I am curious who is on the docket? Who's prepping for the nclex? Do you know if you're going to be taking the ngn, etc.
I think pretty much everyone is like.
Okay, so now we're 20, 23 now. So I think it's pretty much like.
A year and a half. A year and a half ago it was like split, but now unless you're taking the NCLEX like next week or two weeks from Tuesday. Okay, you reminded me of something and now I lost it. What was I going to say?
Loading nurse need, taking it in June. Awesome.
Oh, very good. This is what I was going to say. Okay, we have a lot of nursing SOS members on here. I know because I see you. So. Nursing SS members. Okay, I'm talking to you. Don't freak out about the ngn. Like everything that you are learning inside our membership community. We break down everything you need to know for nursing school to pass your exams. Okay? Do not worry, do not worry. Like we walk you through the critical thinking behind everything. Right? Like you know us, when you're in the nursing ESSENCE membership community, we do not just give you a list of sciences symptoms to memorize or a list of nursing interventions or nursing assessments to do. No, no, no, no, no. That's not how we roll around here. We tell you the critical thinking behind it. So do not worry. If you're a nursing SS member, don't freak out about the ngn. I don't want it to see any of you guys freaking out about it because you are going to do amazing. Okay? It's exactly what we talk about inside our community.
Yeah, for sure. And that's a really good point. It's exactly what we talk about in our community. It's how we teach inside the community. So it's really important that you're getting all the critical thinking down. And again, the NCLEX is really just a way of them to judge whether you know the material or can think outside the box and, and can be a really good nurse. So that's, I think that that's kind of the basis on changing it up a little bit and being, being more critical thinking based or just kind of thinking more or practically or what you would do in real life situations. So they can judge what you would, how you would act in real life situations.
100%.
Yeah.
Sarah, loving the membership so far. I'm so happy to hear that. I love it too. We love helping our students. This is, this is what I was born for.
How can we join?
Oh, membership is closed right now for enrollment and so you can get on the VIP wait list to join the next round and I suggest that you Do. Because we have so many fun things coming.
Lots of fun things coming about that today.
If you're a nursing SOS member, buckle up, because it's going to be awesome over the next several months for you, my friends. Okay, so the next thing I want to say about this new nclex, I'm going to give you the good news. The very, very good news. Okay, first good news, great news, you might even say is that select all that apply questions will get partial credit. Like, can we just have a moment for this, friends? Partial credit for Santa questions. Come on. I didn't have that.
Yeah, so that didn't used to be the case. So everyone that was taking the old nclex, sorry, but yes, partial credits for select all that apply. And everyone knows how much everyone loves those, right?
Yeah.
Right?
Yeah.
Hand raised or emoji, Your favorite emoji for anyone that loves the SATA questions.
You guys know that the turtle is my favorite. Yes. Partial credit for select a little play. The next thing that is so cool, you guys, and just, you know, so nice of them is that you don't have to memorize lab values. Come on. I had to memorize all of them. Still haven't memorized. Oh, gee. Yes, you don't have to memorize lot values anymore. They will give them to you, which is pretty fabulous, right? No, they don't have partial credit for.
Select all apply for the current one.
Yeah, for the current one.
Oh, yeah. Yep. So if you miss one or if you choose too many.
Partial credit. Oh, yeah, partial credit.
Now partial credit. I'm not exactly sure that how this shakes out, but yeah, I think. I think that's. That's good. And I'm sure that a lot of people will agree that they. They like that. So. Yes, yes.
So lab values don't have to memorize them because they will be on the test. Okay. I guess the thing that I do want to say about that is that maybe some nursing schools aren't caught up yet. And so for your nursing school exams, you probably should memorize them anyway. Just because you don't know if your nursing school exams are going to have them on there, Right? They might not. Definitely. You can perhaps ask your instructor kind of what their standard is. If they're using ATI and hesi, most likely it'll be caught up to the ngn Kaplan. Same thing like the big, you know, curriculum. Those are. I think they're caught up already. But if your school is still on, like, paper tests or like exams written by your instructor, they might not Be caught up. So you might not actually have the lab values in front of you when you take your nursing school exams. So you might need to memorize them anyway. I guess that's a little bit of bad news perhaps. I tried to start with the good news, my friends. I gave you good news. So take that. I think though that a lot of the good news is like how they're structuring questions because they're very cool. Like the new question types that they have are very, very neat.
Yeah, they have a bunch of different. They do new kinds. And again, this is so that it feels more like real life or just different scenarios, scenario based questions so that get more of a feeling of what you would do in a real life situation.
Yeah. Because you can like click around a patient's chart, which is really cool. So like in the question they give you the patient's chart. Like patient history, here's the assessment, here's like their labs, here's their medications, like all this stuff. Right. You can actually click through their chart and then answer the questions, which is kind of nice. Right? You get a lot of information there. So in that way it is like, it is more like real life, like Matthew said, which is pretty fabulous. Oh, so you guys. Yeah, YouTube. Sorry, at the beginning you couldn't hear me, but I have a really fantastic NCLEX handout for you. Okay. Like I got it from the ncsbn. They're the people that create the nclex and it's just like this really nice PDF with some like an itemized list of the types of questions that they're going to ask and some of the changes that they're making. So just DM me on Instagram. I have it so I can just send it to you. Okay. So just DM me over on Instagram. We're at Nursing SOS and then.
Yep, at Nursing SOS over on Instagram and Christina will send you that link. So really good to really dive in and kind of see they have examples of the different kinds of questions. It's kind of interesting to get familiar with it. So when it's not the first time that you're going to see it is on the nclex.
Yeah. Right.
So the more you know and the more that you're familiar with, the less stress it will be for you.
100%.
Yeah.
My books are all covered in post it notes.
Yeah, those are, posting those back there. Those are all our new members.
Okay. But the book that I recommend, I'm not gonna. It's covered in post it note. Sorry. Or I would pull it out for you. But it's the Saunders nclex Review Guide. Okay. One. Rosa. Oh, eight. Yes, the Saunders nclex Review Guide. Okay. No, Matthew is not a nurse. Hi, Roseanne.
Hi. Am I a nurse? I am not a nurse. I am just a detecty. That's why I have to fix the YouTube. Sorry, YouTube.
I don't know how to do that.
But yeah, so I am usually behind the scenes. The one time that I sneak out in front of the camera is for our lives. So let me know. Let me know if you like it or not.
You make appearances?
I do make some appearance sometimes, yes. Elsewhere.
Super fun.
I pop up just like Walda.
And he edits all of our YouTube videos. So if you ever wonder what Matthew is up to, he's usually doing that.
Oh, Vanessa, please type in the book name. Book name.
Saunders. Nclex Review Guide.
Saunders.
Yep.
Let's see if I can do this. NCLEX Review Guide.
What? Should you answer questions Correct. Sorry, Miriam, I'm not understanding what your question is. Okay. Actually though, we have a YouTube video that is like question hacks. What is the title of that? Somebody tell me. Go to our YouTube channel because we have. We just posted a video just a few weeks ago, I think, or like within the past few months that has like NCLEX question hacks. Okay, let's just go to our YouTube channel and find it. You'll find it. Or maybe someone who's on YouTube. Just type in the name. Yeah, I've watched you guys a lot. Oh, I'm glad you. Thank you.
Which edition of that Saunders Anglex Review Guide? The latest.
Yes, the. The latest. I don't know which one. The ones that I have actually are old.
Yeah, those are probably a little. Little outdated, but try and get the latest versions for sure.
Should we review the whole Saunders book for the nclex? Okay, so when you're prepping for the nclex, one thing that you need to remember is that you don't need to review everything, especially the things you already know. You do not need to focus your study time on the things that you already know. Okay. Focus your study time on the topics that you are struggling with. So for me, the topics that I was struggling with were lab values and pharmacology. So back in the day when we had to memorize the lab values, I really struggled with that and pharmacology. So those were really the two topics that I focus on a lot before the nclex. Like cardiac, respiratory. I was Very good at that. Fundamentals, fluids and electrolytes. I mean like the, like the IV fluids and stuff I did need to review. But as far as like electrolyte stuff, I mean, I think I maybe struggled with it a little bit, but that was pretty straightforward for me. So your strengths and weaknesses are going to be different. Okay. So don't focus your study time on and waste a bunch of time studying things that you already know and you know can answer fear like 70 confidently with. Okay. Like focus on the things that you're like 50 confident in. 40%. You see what I'm saying?
Caitlin? Our book bundle this August had the 9th edition, so 9th edition ads of August. Thank you, Caitlin.
Book bundles, yeah. Oh, man. You basically need like a dolly for that or a hand truck. Like you need like genuinely the backpacks with the wheels. Yes, A wheeled backpack to get all those books out, class and everything.
But going back to your tip, that's really the pro tip for the nclex and actually for your exams too is don't focus so much time on the stuff that you already know, which is kind of. I don't know if it's counterintuitive is the right word, but a lot of people like doing that because it makes you feel good. Right. Oh, I'm doing all these practice questions on all this information that I already know.
Guess what?
I'm getting them. Right. Feel good. I'm ready for this test.
Yes.
Which is not correct. So definitely. Yeah. That is really a pro tip for all your exams, especially your nclex though, is really focus on the things that you have trouble with. And yeah, make sure that the information you know, you still know. So a quick review of that but really focus on the things that you're struggling with so you get more confident with those questions, those kind of things.
Absolutely. Caitlyn. Books all in crates in the back of the car. That's the way to do it, my friend. And Sarah. Yes. Okay. Sarah said Saunders nine. Yep.
Fabulous. Cool.
I'm sure that's the updated one. Exactly like what Matthew was saying, if you are a member, you've perhaps you have been on one of our coaching calls the past few weeks, but we talk a lot about that. Like it's so funny. What our brains do to keep us safe in one of those things is to conserve energy. Right. Like our brains want to keep us safe and conserve as much energy as possible. It does not want to step outside your comfort zone. Right. And do anything new at all, ever. And nursing school is all the new things all of the time. Right. So it's very difficult when you are trying to learn new things in nursing school and your brain keeps freaking out and telling you that basically you're gonna die and it's impossible and you're never gonna make it, you know? Right. And so your brain wants to be comfortable. It doesn't want to grow at all or get better at anything. Right. So it's very comfortable to reread or restudy the things that you already know. That's our comfort zone. Right. We don't want to learn anything new, but we have to get past that. That's very challenging to do. When you're studying for the nclex. When you're studying for a nursing school exam, you have to focus on studying the things that you don't already know, which is the harder thing to do. Right. It's a lot more difficult than just reading, like we said, the Saunders Review guide or watching a video on a topic that you already are pretty good at, you know?
Yeah.
Your brain wants to protect you.
And on. On that note too, on your brain wanting to conserve energy, that's another reason why we're doing this live right now. So that you don't have to stress out about the unknowns or stress about. About out about what the new NCLEX is all about. We're just here to tell you that not to do that. Do not stress out. As long as you know the material, you're going to be fine. And that will help you conserve brain energy too, because you don't have to worry about that now. Yes.
100%. And you guys. Yes. Make sure that you DM me on Instagram. Okay. Because I do have a. It's a really nice like PDF, just digital thing. I'm going to send it to you. It's from the NCSBN and it has the list of like the test questions and stuff that they're changing on the nclex. So yeah, Caitlin, Sarah, Theo, like DM me. Okay. On Instagram. Please, please, please, because I want to send that to you. It is just a really nice breakdown of some of the changes. So with that, like just real quick, some of the really cool ones that they have are like highlighting. They'll give you paragraphs. Right. Like we always. We already talked about patient charts. So you're going to get patient charts to be able to click through and then answer questions based off of. We already talked about. Select all the apply that are partial credit now, which is so nice. Then they also have like highlighting so you'll get like a paragraph and you have to highlight whatever the information is that they want you to. So like key information or you know, whatever they ask really. But you have to highlight the text in the paragraph. Another one is like drop downs where it's like, you know, it's a box and you'll just get drop down. It's kind of like, I mean it's kind of like a glorified multiple choice. Basically it's just a drop down. But you know, it keeps it kind of fun and fresh. Right?
Yeah.
What if we just saw the NCLEX as being fun and not like so overwhelming and daunting?
I think we could do that. They also have like a matching thing where there's like two columns and you.
Have to match something up or. Yeah, you need to. Well, you need. I don't think you need to match. Maybe you do need to match them.
So there, there's that one and there's like, like an ordering thing, right?
You have to order what it is. Yeah. It's not, if I remember, it's not like a match, but it's like a. You have to put them in order.
Okay.
Yeah. Of things. Which is, which is cool. I mean, like I said, it kind of keeps it fun and fresh.
Yeah. So someone's asking, what do you think? Is it harder than the old one? And maybe people that are on that have taken the NCLEX already, sometimes at the end they actually throw in some of these new questions. So anyone on that has already seen a couple of new questions and what do you think? Do you think it is easier or harder? Let's get some opinions going.
You know, I, okay, my personal. I, I took the old one and it was like the old one that I took was. I'm pretty sure it was last version or was it even a version before that? Like, I don't know, it's been, it's been several years. So I honestly, this is coming from me and I have not taken the new one. I have not. You know, it looks like kind of a wash because what they did was that they, they added these different item types. Right. Like highlighting like the, the drop down menus, like the matching or whatever, the ordering, basically the. All that. But then also they're giving you partial credit for SATA questions and then they're also not requiring you to memorize lab values anymore, which is kind of cool. Like they're giving you those. So I, I do think that it might be a little more of a wash than people are saying. Also though, here's the thing with that question, like, is it harder? Is it easier? I don't think that's the right question to be asking. Because if you are telling yourself that it's harder, like, thinking that does not help you at all. Okay? So there's really no benefit to thinking that it's harder. Do you guys see that? Like, you are. It's just, it's very tough to study and find the motivation or energy to study from that place when you're feeling like, I can't do this. It's impossible. It's too hard.
Shout out to our YouTube that just went. Our YouTube video. We had a new one that was posted just today and also the one last week. Christina goes into this quite a bit about you call it brain drama.
It's just brain drama.
People love that phrase. So it's really just the brain drama. So if you haven't watched that, go back and watch those. But really, like you said, it's kind of useless comparing the two. You are going to be taking the new one if you haven't taken the nclex and because of where your school is out, you're probably going to be taking the new one. It's not worth it to compare the old one with the new one. You're going to take the one that you're going to take and you're going to study and you're going to do your best.
Do you guys notice that? I mean, it just doesn't help you at all. So this is the same thing. We talked about this on our coaching call Inside the Community. I think it was actually the time before this last time. So, like a couple weeks ago, we talked about this on a coaching call where it's very easy for us to go into nursing school and listen to all the nursing school rumors. Like, this instructor is so hard, and everyone says that this class is super hard and everyone fails and everyone fails this exam or whatever. It's very easy to get caught up in that. But, you know, I really want you to notice, like, how that is affecting you in, you know, how you are preparing for your exams, how much effort you're putting into studying. It does not help you to, you know, be telling yourself that it's so hard you can't pass. I'm, you know, I'm not smart enough. All of this, all of this brain drama, right, that we give ourselves in nursing school, it doesn't help you. It does not help you to listen to the nursing school rumors. What does help you is when you have more confidence Right. Like you change your thinking about it. Like silent, you know, stop the brain drama and, and start thinking more positively. Like, okay, even though this is. This might be harder than what I'm used to, I can still handle it. Like that's a nice thought to have. Like, I can handle this. I can figure it out. I am figuring it out. I am trying. I am doing this. Those are better thoughts to be thinking instead of. It's so hard, you know, this is useless. I'm never going to pass all the brain dominate. Who's that?
Kimberly, you brought up a really good point. I'm looking at like this, the past nclex does not apply to me because I have to take the new one. So just prepare for it.
Perfect.
That's. That's great.
That's exactly it, Kimberly. Like no drama, not a big deal. It's gonna be fine, you know, and you'll figure it out. That's the thing. Like it, you can figure it out. Like just like that fundamental move, like I have that fundamental belief about myself. I want you to have that fundamental belief about you as well. You can figure it out.
Yep. And so again going back to your brain and how it likes to work and we've been talking that it wants to take the easiest route or it wants to, it wants to do the easiest thing. It doesn't want to take up too much energy because that takes up too much work. So just all this overthinking, all this stressing out is not helping your brain either and is just taking up space where you could be studying in NCLEX 100%.
Okay friends, next week we didn't have farm today so next week I want to talk about pharmacology.
Okay.
On this live. So Monday next week Matthew and I will be on here. Same time, same place. Sorry. YouTube. The audio will be working at the beginning next time.
I changed some stuff around so we're good to go for next time. Again to get those examples of the different kinds of new questions, go ahead and DM Christine Christina Nursingsos on Instagram.
Yes, I just have a really nice PDF like handout for you guys about the next gen nclex. So I want to send it to you. I just, it's just like a link. So just DM me and I'll send it to you. It's great.
Yes. And the people that have dm, that's great. Thank you. We'll get over to sending those over to you.
Yep.
And what time next week?
Same time, same place. So 6:30 Pacific. 9:30 Eastern.
Awesome.
This is our weekly live show, so if you are here for the first time, welcome. My friends, we have. Matthew and I have been doing our live show for the past. What? Well, this is probably a year and a two and a half years now. Yeah.
And all of them, all the lives are actually up on our YouTube channel. So if you've missed any or if you want to review this one. We've also done a couple other lives on the NGN where we talk a little bit more about the different kinds of questions. So definitely if you haven't subscribed to our YouTube channel as well, like, subscribe.
Yeah, I just had today, like 121,000 subscribers. Mind blown.
Are you one of those?
That's amazing.
If not, get on it, please.
Thank you, friends.
YouTube likes those. All those algorithm thingies.
So definitely you got to tell them that you like us so that they keep showing people. Yeah, I think that's how it works.
That is how it works.
Yes. So, yes, Monday, same time, same place, and we'll talk about pharmacology. I think that that's really. Do you think that's a good one?
I think that's good.
We got several questions about it, and I was not able to really adjust that today, so farm next week. Cool.
Cool.
Sound like a plan. All right, my friends, we will see you.
Thank you, everyone.
Take care.
Take care.
Bye.
Bye.
Bye, Instagram. Bye, YouTube. Bye.
