How to STUDY EFFECTIVELY in Nursing School

Christina Rafano and Matthew share study strategies for nursing school: rewrite notes by hand, use color-coded pens to separate sources, group pharmacology drugs by class, and replay lectures. They emphasize daily bite-size sessions over cramming and discuss optimal study environments with background music or noise-cancelling headphones.

If we're not talking about your topic today, like, you know, we don't. We're not talking about endocrine today, but we can On a future life. So we like to write them down so that we have, you know, this running list of topics that we're always going to talk be talking about Canada, California.

Study tips for NCLEX. We did do a live two lives. Two lives.
We did.
We did a part one and part two. So go back in our YouTube channel, Instagram. Go back to YouTube channel YouTube.com nursingsquest also hit subscribe. Hit the bell. So you don't miss out on all this fun, exciting things.
Yes.
All right. Well, we were talking about how to study effectively in nursing school. So we were talking about high level study tips, high level things that you can do to just kind of supercharge your study time.
Supercharged.
Supercharge your study time. Also reaching out to the peeps out there. Go ahead and type down in the comments what your favorite study tips are or what you can do. What helps you when studying maybe will help someone else out here too.
So we talk a lot about, like, nitty gritty, kind of, here's what you need to study in nursing school, here's what you need to focus on. Here's all the things for nursing school specific stuff. But we wanted to do kind of the more high level, like, yes, thank you, Alyssa.
Awesome.
Like just, just general study tips that we don't often talk about that could really help you study more effectively. So not just like, you know, we talk a lot, like I said, about what you need to study, what you need to focus on, but we also need to talk about really, like how to do like, like the practical. Okay. Like I now, I now know what to study, but now how do I do that? So let's talk about it. Post some of your best study tips in the comments. Instagram, you are winning right now. There are a lot of. Let's see.
So. So what do we see? What do we see here for everyone else? So yeah, when you scroll up, I know Alyssa was saying, rewriting all my notes in my hand. So yes, that is really good. Numerous ways of just re going through all the things that you've learned looking through your notes in new and innovative ways. So, yeah, that includes rewriting it in your own hand. If you typed it up, then, you know, you write it down. It's just another way of seeing all that information and reprocessing it and helping you out. So, yeah, that's definitely a good one.
Alyssa, Rewriting all your notes by hand, by hand is really the, the key, I think, so that you're not just typing it out on a computer, but you're actually, like, physically writing it out. I think that that's like if you are a visual learner or a kinesthetic learner. Like, kinesthetic as, as in, you, like, learn by motion, kind of like physical movement. You just. The physical act of writing out your notes and, and then visually seeing them on paper as you do them helps so much like that. I don't know. I think different, depending on what learning style you are, like, is that if you're a visual learner, that'll really help. If you're a kinesthetic learner, that'll really help. And then also if you're like an auditory learner, talk it out. Like, talk your notes out, like, as you're writing them, talk it out. So at least you're hearing your self talk. That can be really effective.
Yeah, yeah. So definitely I am more kinesthetic. So for me, personally. Yeah. Whether you, you go back through and look at, like, my notes from college and all on the margins, I just have drawings just because, like, I just have to be doing something. So whether or not it actually has to even do with the topic at hand, just actually, just doing something just helps me remember things. So it's kind of interesting.
Like our, like our oldest running around the dining room table doing the multiplication tables.
Yeah, that's.
See, it's weird.
He's weird. Well.
I, I. You know where he gets it from. Yeah, I know, I know. Study in advance so you'll have time to practice the questions before the exam. Absolutely. Okay. I can do, like, a whole hour on not procrastinating and studying. Studying every day for nursing school. Because I think this is a huge issue that comes up a lot with nursing students, like, or just with anybody. Okay. What do we do if something is hard? Do we want to do it or do we not want to do it? We typically don't want to do something that is difficult or hard. Right. So if we find that studying and, like, we're stressing for our next exam and studying for. It's going to be difficult and we're like, I don't really want to do that. We're not gonna do it. We're gonna procrastinate and procrastinate. And put it off. And put it off. Right? So exactly. It's. I'm not a thirst. Okay. When you mix the letters and the numbers in your. In your name on Instagram, I get confused. But you know who you are. I think that that is a huge, huge thing. We cannot. You really can't be procrastinating in nursing school because there is just so much content thrown. Thrown at you every single week pretty much all at once, and you just can't get behind. So you have to study every single day. A little bit every single day.
Yeah, a little bit every single day. That. That's a really good one. So here on YouTube, there's definitely some more. Again, a little more specific study tips, but definitely in line with the things that you. The way that you teach for nursing sos. Also one here. Let's see. Definitely for farm I group meds by drug class. Right.
Because Abigail has been around for a while.
No important black box warnings that are super important. Yeah. So definitely for farms specifically. Yeah, that. That's a great way of doing that. That's how we. We suggest that you study your always your.
I don't know why they don't teach this in nursing school. Like, I don't know why nursing instructors don't teach pharmacology this way. So if you guys are confused about pharma at all, just go to our YouTube channel and type in Nursing SOS Pharmacology. And we've got a fantastic video there for you that walks you through some really great pharm types to help you do that, which is exactly right. Abigail, break them down by pharmacologic class and then learn the mechanism of action for that class. You are exactly, exactly right.
Alison, Read through the PowerPoint Acute Medical Dictionary and the drug guide in case you don't recognize something. Something. Yeah.
Oh, nerd nurse queen on Instagram. Replay the lectures. Okay. This is huge. If you're a nursing school. Okay, raise your hand. Can't really raise your hand. Throw up an emoji.
Throw up an emoji of a hand, raising up all the hearts. Do that.
Or a unicorn. Your favorite emoji. Whatever. Put the hearts up on Instagram. I love it when, like, the hearts blow all up. And I wish they had that on YouTube because that's super fun. If you so. So put your favorite emoji emoji if you are Allowed to record lecture. Okay. And if you're not, can you tell me no, just so I know people are like, you know, are you saying yes? Are you saying no? If you are allowed to record lecture, tell me. Yeah, if you are not allowed to record lecture, tell me. So a lot of people are able to record lecture. Sometimes that is not the case. So for me personally, I love recording lecture. However, when I got to nursing school, it wasn't allowed HIPAA stuff and all that thing. All that stuff. The nursing school did not want that kind of liability, so they didn't allow it. But for my prereqs, that was super helpful. So for A and P, for microbiology, for biology, for, you know, psychology, all the things, all the ologies, I was able to record lecture and that really, really helped me. But then in nursing school it wasn't allowed to. So here's what I recommend. A lot of you guys are saying no.
No. Yes.
They record it for us. Now that things are online changes the game a little bit, right? So you can't. Yeah, that's interesting. If your classes are on Zoom, you can record it. Basically ours are recorded.
Ours are recorded and listen over and over again. Yes.
Yeah. Okay. So this is also what I've heard. Like nursing instructors, when your classes are online, like they'll have a PowerPoint and then record an audio over it. So it's like not really in real time. It's like pre recorded. Are they pre recorded or are they live lectures now? I'm curious.
Maybe you don't know.
Or maybe you don't know.
Maybe your teachers are elsewhere doing other things. Who knows?
That's funny.
So.
No. So I don't know. It's kind of mixed. What do you think? Do most people allow. I think on Instagram, most people are allowed to record.
Interesting.
Yeah.
Quick shout out to Abigail. Yes, Abigail with the Farm. Farm tip. Graduated nursing school, passing nclex on my first try and a member with us. So thank you very much.
Love, love, love it. They block you from recording on Zoom. Oh, bummer. Urgent Recorded. I listen. Yeah, Both. Okay. Pre recorded it. When they go live, it's pointless. Live lecture. Okay. My teacher uses old lectures. So that is really interesting that this kind of transition. Yeah. Because I mean, if you're. Yeah. If you are in a nursing class, I mean that's kind of frustrating. Like you spend thousands of dollars to go to a nursing school and then you have online slides with a pre recorded lecture that your instructor recorded two semesters ago. You know, it can. So someone On Instagram says reused from.
Last we can't record. But because last year's lectures are still available on Microsoft Stream. So you can look it up. All right. Okay.
And listen that way. Okay.
Very cool. So yeah, overall the general idea is again, multiple different ways to review the content that you're given. Whether they do allow you to record it and then go through it again, it's another way of, of going through it. So if you're really an auditory person being able to listen to it again, that that will help. If not, then yes again, all the other tips. Reading the PowerPoints or yeah, if you're. If you can rewrite all your notes again by hand. A lot of it is really good that by hand. There really is something about that. I'm always, I'm the techie. I'm the techie guy. So I always do like just typing it out on my computer. But there is something about writing it out. The jury's still out on me. Whether like writing it on tablet or writing it on paper. I'm assuming that really just that that physical paper is really the best way to go. Someone also said different color inks. Christina has a specific way of that.
She took notes with multiple around for a while.
So yes, different. Different ways of studying and different ways of obtaining your notes and reviewing your notes. That is definitely good.
Hey Monica, I'm curious. Why do you prefer pre recorded? Is it just because you can go back through again and again and again? I'm curious. I think the probably the biggest downside of something that's pre recorded is you can't ask questions. And oftentimes what I've heard from nursing students is that when you email your instructor, it's hard to get a response back in a timely manner. Sometimes, you know, they get a lot of questions and things and you know, it's just them. So you know, it can be hard to respond to those. Um, that I can see is probably the biggest downfall. Um, but I'd love to know, do you guys prefer pre recorded or do you prefer live? And why? Let us know in the comments. Um, I kind of like how we do it in the membership community. So in our nursing SOS membership community, I think our members love it because they have the prerecorded lectures. So you know, I'm on video if you like our YouTube channel. You know, you will love the Nursing SS membership community because I walk you through step by step, everything you have to know for nursing school in a prerecorded video. But then also you get weekly Coaching calls with us. So we, you know, dive deep into these topics of, you know, how to stop procrastinating, how to beat burnout, how to manage your time better. So you have weekly touch points with me, with our lead nurse, Nicole. We have those conversations, we have those coaching calls. And then also we have our nursing school tutor form, which is fantastic. So, so our members, not only do you get the prerecorded videos, but you also, anytime you have questions, if you get stuck on any, anything your instructor says in class, if you're confused by that, if you have a dose count question that you don't understand, if you're trying to write a care plan and you just don't get it, like submit a tutor form and a nurse on our team will get back to you within 24 hours, often by video. We're so good. We love video. So we will do a video for you, walking you through it. It's so, so nice. So it's, I think that that's a really great kind of balance of those, of those elements pre recorded because you get the, you know, you can listen to it again and again and again if you need to. And then live when you have a question, it's just really nice to ask it on live video. Like this, right? Like this.
Yeah. Monica, that's really great. Your teachers are good about responding to emails, so that's really good.
Perfect.
Shoot in the comments. Instagram and YouTube. Yeah. Do you guys regularly reach out to your teachers and ask questions? Because that's another really big tip for studying effectively so you know what to study. If you have any questions, you guys reach out to your teachers. Do they respond? I'm, I'm curious about that because. Yes, studying effectively and knowing what to study is a really good part about studying effectively.
It's huge. Mamie Gab on Instagram. Thank you. The nursing SOS membership is a lifesaver. It capitalizes on the lectures for sure. Love the prerecorded and the previous recorded lives. Yes. Oh yeah, that's huge actually too, because in the nursing SS membership community we have a whole database of tutoring calls. So I used to do a tutoring call every week. So I would answer questions every week. And then now we're moving toward coaching calls, which is very, very cool. So where you get me and Nicole, our leaders. So it's, it's really, really nice to have to have those two things. So, you know, any questions you have, it's great. We're always here. All right. I missed a few comments on Instagram.
You know when the membership will open again? It will open for spring.
Yeah, yeah, first spring.
So definitely get on the wait list or just join our.
It's not really a wait list. I don't like that word because people always ask like what number they are.
Be the first to know when it opens again.
It's not like that kind of wait list. It's like just like, okay, you, like I put you on a separate list for emails and then if you are on that list then I will email you right when it opens and then you will, you know, you will get first dibs at the membership. You know, you will get more reminders about it. So definitely you want to get on that list and sign up. So yeah, Matthew is going to put in the chat on YouTube, on Instagram, if you're on Instagram. Nursing School of success.com forward/join to get on the Not a wait list wait list. We should start calling it that. It's not a waitlist wait list for the nursing SOS membership community next time it opens because, oh friends, I've got to tell you if you are. We've heard a lot from nursing students who are concerned about the new nclex, the ngn being in a concept based program that's all about like synthesizing information together and critical thinking. Like that is exactly what we do. So if you are at all concerned about passing your next exam or passing this term or you know, passing your finals or trying to figure out how to study it all and you know, learn everything that you need to, you absolutely cannot miss out on joining the next time the nursing membership community is open. So please get on that list. It's just going to help you so much. Like critical thinking, connecting concepts together. We tell you exactly what is happening, you know, with all the disorders in the body that you're going to learn about in nursing school, we tell you exactly what is happening and why. Like why does the, you know, what is happening with the pathophysiology? Why do the signs and symptoms occur? What are you going to assess for what, what nursing interventions are you going to do? We connect it all together. We basically do the critical thinking for you. So we walk you through. We literally hold your hand through all of it so you, so you don't have to stay stuck or confused as you're preparing for your exam. To be honest, I created this community because I was so tired of textbooks telling me what was going on. But they wouldn't tell you like why they wouldn't tell you like the things you actually had to know, Right. Like, they'll tell you, oh, like X, y, and Z is going on with this disorder. And here's a list of signs and symptoms for you to memorize. Well, it's not helpful for your exam. Right? Like, you can't just memorize a list of things. You can't just memorize a list of signs and symptoms. You can't memorize a list of nursing interventions you're going to do. You have to actually understand it, because when you get to your exam, you're going to have to apply that information. So that's exactly why we designed the nursing and social membership community in this way. We literally hold your hand through all of that critical thinking. So if you're struggling with critical thinking, with taking your nursing school exams and understanding it, understanding the concepts, you absolutely have to join. I know that was a lot. That was, like, a long thing. But I just, I. It's such a soapbox for me because I just. It's frustrating when, like, nursing instructors just tell you to read the textbook, and that's just not helpful. Right. So join the membership. Don't worry. I will. I will walk you through it all. It's going to be great. You will do fantastic. I will help you. There you go. Can you tell that she is passionate about.
Can you tell?
Okay, soapbox over. I will. So, but I literally need, like, we need, like a. A prop or something. So anytime Christina has a soapbox, I will, like, put it here so everyone knows. Okay. This is the soapbox. And then take it away. All right, I'm stepping back. Ah, you guys are great. All right. Oh, let me scroll back up, because there were several. Oh, better to write it on paper. Colored ink and highlighters.
Yeah. And someone was asking, what are the colors and things that you. You do. Oh, for your notes. You want to go through that real quick?
Yes. Veronic78 on Instagram. So here's what I recommend for taking notes in class. You need to. You don't need to, but here's what I recommend. I can't make you do this when you take notes in class. A piece of paper, please? Because I am very, very like, yeah, that'll work. No, I just want, like, something to say. Okay. So here's our nursing school study system. If you're a nursing SOS member, you have this for free inside your dashboard. So here's what I recommend as you are taking notes in class, like, use one color of pen. Doesn't matter what color color it is. It could Be blue, black, pink, purple, yellow might be a little too hard.
To see, but choose a color that you can use to read.
Green.
That would be a good one.
You know, Red, you know. So as you're taking notes in class, write out your notes in one color. And then when you get home, you're going to write out notes, you know, if you are using a textbook. So if you're not, insider nursing as this membership community, if you are having to read a textbook every day and take notes from the book, then you will take notes from the book in a different color pen. Okay? And here's why. Here's why I tell you this. You want to differentiate your notes between what your instructor said in class and then what you read in the textbook. Because your nursing instructor, they either wrote your exam or they know what's on your exam generally. So they know what to teach on. They know how to. How to prepare you for it generally. So you need to go more based off of what they say in class, okay? Because that is what's most likely going to show up on your exams. And so if you find something in the textbook that conflicts with what your instructor says in class, I always recommend that you reach out to your instructor and reconcile those things. You know, ask them about it. However, if. Well, here's the other thing. If you get to your exam and something is on the exam that was conflicting with your instructor, you do want to default to the book because you actually have physical evidence of that. Like, physical evidence. Like, here it is in the book. Read that. But for the most part, you're going to default for what your instructor says. Okay? Got it. Does that make sense? So black, blue, purple, pink, green, whatever, orange, red, whatever color you want to use for taking notes in class. And that's like online class, on your zoom meetings or in class, in person, whatever your situation is, take notes in one color. And then when you get home, take notes from. From the textbook in a separate color. That way you can differentiate between where those two types of notes came from. Cool. Send up a heart. If that makes sense, please let us know. I hope I am explaining that correctly. Okay. Instagram says it's good. All right, all right.
Where is the tutor form? Tutor form is in the bonus course.
Right inside the Nursing US membership community. Click on Bonuses and the tutor form will be the first thing that you see right up at the top. So tutor form, and then also scroll down through the bonuses, because there's a lot of really great bonuses inside the nursing SOS membership community, just so you know.
All right, so what other study tips do you guys have or that you find very helpful to you while studying? And again, general things. Do you like a quiet environment or do you like a little bit of background noise? Do you like going to Starbucks? Is Starbucks still a thing with everyone?
Or maybe can you sit down in a Starbucks?
Yeah, can you sit down in Starbucks still? Or another, like, coffee shop or a library? Do you prefer to go somewhere or do you prefer to stay at home? Let us know. What are your preferences for studying environments? And again, how. What helps you study effectively?
Yes, nurse. I just realized that it's not. Queen, nurse. Queen Glay. Okay. I don't know if I'm saying that right. I'm sorry. Let's see. Study the learning objectives. Absolutely. Study. So some schools call them different things, like modules, learning objectives, what have you. Kind of the same idea, whatever they give you. So those are kind of their key points of what you need to know throughout the term. So definitely make sure that you know those, especially for your final exam. Definitely. Because that is. That is, like, legitimately what your school's. What your instructor and your school has said, like, this is what the students need to know. Does that make sense? Cool. On the topic of sound machines and music, I am. I've never been a music person. Okay. Latasha. La. Quiet. Yep, that's me. Like, please shh. You know, like, even with the kids around, it's tough to focus because there's so many voices in the background. It's just. That's a lot for my brain to handle.
So.
So I need. I like the quiet. But you always are.
Oh, well, actually, that's not too true. I actually do study quiet.
Okay. You study, like, things you have to.
Focus on, maybe things to focus on. And I think, in general, again, comment. If you don't agree with this, but in general, with the whole multitasking thing and the fact that people really don't multitask, it's task switching.
It's hard to do. Like, you can't do both.
You can't do both. And so for. For really light level tasks and things like that that you can already automatically work through, then, look, background music or background things work. But when you're really trying to study and retain information, again, for me, I found that it is better to be quiet. And on that note, if you do study at home, again, study tips. Studying effectively. Really? You want an area? Try and carve out an area, a space that is your study area. Make it known in your household. This is my Study area when I'm here, off limits. And just kind of really carve out a space that is yours and your own. And you want a sense of normalcy or a normal place that you go to every time that you know that when you're there, you're studying. It helps you own brain out. And it also helps your household know that, oh, they are there, they're studying. Let me bug them a little less.
Oh, this isn't where I put my Cheetos. Yeah, my Cheerios. Sorry, I didn't mean Cheetos. I meant Cheerios.
So that's really a good thing to do is really set aside something and really, if you want to really focus and study, maybe some light music. Again, on the music side, Mary, you're saying music for me. What kind of music? Probably not a lot of lyrics. Maybe just musical things so your. Your brain isn't pulled out and trying to listen to lyrics at the same time. And a prime example of this is who of you have been driving, have the radio on, and if you're trying to get to someplace, just instinctively turn down the radio. Why would you do that?
Like, you don't know where. If you don't know where you're going.
Know where you're going. If you don't know where you are and your music is going and you're driving around, what do you do? You turn off the music. Why? It's because your brain cannot handle all of that and it gets distracted. So you really do need to focus. And so that's just a. An example that really maybe some light music, some white noise, some background music, but really to study, focus on what you're doing.
Yeah. That is so funny. And I know you've said that to me several times. It's just like. It's just this idea of multitasking and that, like, we can't. You know, our brains are not wired this way. We need to focus. And so I do find myself when I drive and especially like if the. If the kids are loud. If the kids are too loud and it's just too much, I will turn down the radio. Or like, it's just. It's just too much. It's too much for mommy friends. Too much. So, you know, you can't. You can't do both. And like, yeah, definitely trying to. If I get lost or trying to find somewhere that I don't know where I'm going. Yeah, definitely needs to be quiet so I can think a little bit.
Prefer a quiet environment. Most probably at home. Okay. Yeah. Not the bed. Yes. That is. That is a great.
Don't study in your bed.
That is.
That is a great tip. People study in your bed all the time. Do not do that. We should have, like, led this live with that. Do not study in your bedroom.
Carve out a place to study, and that place should not be your bed.
Yes. Yeah, don't. I mean, it's. It's nice that it's like, it's comfy, but you can't, like, focus, and you need two separate things. So here's the thing. You're kind of training your brain to be in study mode. In your bedroom, in your bed. And then when you try to go to sleep before your exam, you're like, in study mode, right? It's like, you have to. Have to. You have to have a differentiator.
Unless you can take your exam in a bed, don't study in a bed. Because, again, there's something about studying in an environment that it closely simulates where you're actually going to be. It actually helps with recall, and that's actually pretty cool. Allison was just saying, use a certain gum or hard candy while studying and then bring it with you and use it while you are in your exam. I've never done that, but I'm assuming that that actually works really well.
Interesting. I have never heard that before. And that makes total sense to me.
I like that a lot.
It's like hacking your brain, right? Like that. That is really cool. Thank you for that, Alison. Like piano music without the word licks.
Without words or lyrics. Yeah, yeah. Background music. Some Mozart.
Mozart. Noise canceling headphones. Okay, now do those things work really, like noise canceling headphones? So the noise canceling headphones, the only experience I have with those are the ones that you use for mowing the lawn that are like. They're not noise canceling headphones. They're like. What do you call them?
Well, no, those aren't noise canceling headphones.
Those are noise canceling headphones. To me, I would bring those into my exam.
Those are just earmuffs or whatever. I don't know.
For, like, doing yard work, you know, when the. When the blower is too loud, it's what we put on the kids if there's something too loud outside. But they want, like. If we go to a. Like, our kids love construction, so. Come on. So we take them, like, down the street to see some, I don't know, whatever kind of digger they want to see, and it's too loud. I put those little. The little earmuffs Ear muffs on. I don't know, but I'm not gonna walk into an exam with those. Oh, man.
I have no. Well, yeah, I have a couple different pairs of noise canceling headphones. They. They do work.
Noise canceling that are for drummers. Yeah, it's something like that. Right.
Kind of. So there. There's actually two kinds of noise canceling headphones. There's passive and there's active. And here's me on my techie.
So there you go.
So passive works better, but it is actually kind of like sticking something inside your ear. So a lot of people don't like that. The active works pretty well. But you do actually have to be. I find that you do actually have to be playing light music through it at the same time. Because if not, if you're just putting on noise canceling headphones with nothing on, you get that weird white whooshing sound, which is kind of weird like the ocean.
Like listening to a seashell. Does it sound like that actually? Is it kind of like listening to a seashell?
A little bit. A little bit. When you're not. When you don't have any music on. So, yeah. Light music, no lyrics and yeah. Noise canceling headphones to kind of drown out the kids.
Yeah.
Then you're good to go.
As long as they are sing. That's funny. I've never had noise canceling headphones before for it. But I don't like sticking things in my ears. It's weird. I don't know, I'm like, you have your. You have your what? I mean, like, it's just like AirPod things. That's right. Like I said that. Right, right. AirPods.
Yeah, yeah.
AirPods. But we don't have AirPods. But you have something like it that like goes inside and I don't know, I find it weird.
Yeah. Okay, so Bose bows, obviously, is the bow.
See, I was gonna say like Bozie Boise.
That and Sony's.
So yeah, I don't know anything about any of those.
Work really well.
Yeah. Can you use those for your exam? I mean, like, that's a good question.
Can you actually use those for your exam? Because it goes back to kind of.
Are you listening to your pre recorded lecture during the exam? You know, I could see that being questioned.
Yeah, it goes back to that you want to simulate your testing environment as much as possible. So that. That is a good point. Are you allowed to wear and listen to music while you're taking your exam?
He said yes. Interesting.
All right, cool.
Okay. Instagram. Where'd you go Instagram? I see a lot of people joining, but not a lot of people commenting. This is the YouTube show right now, apparently. Are you guys allowed to listen to. Well, maybe not listen to music, but like, are you allowed to have earphones in while you're taking your nursing school exams? That sounds.
No, they think you're cheating.
Allison. I'm with you.
I would think that too.
Honestly, so genuinely I would be like, that's, that's probably not. That's not good.
I remember when I took my, my PMP exam.
I don't think so. They think you're listening to something. Oh, okay. Like your, your pre recorded lecture notes.
Carrie.
You know it wrotes. Everyone on Instagram says no. That's weird. That's weird.
Yeah. So again, if it works for you, if you're in a noisy environment and you need the noise canceling headphones to study, then all four.
And if your instructors allow it, I mean, that's cool. Just know that the NCLEX is not going to allow you to use headphones.
Make us take off our smartwatch. Yeah, I remember.
So you can, you can. You can't have a smartwatch on, but you can have earphones in. That doesn't make any sense to me. I'm very confused. Interesting.
Yeah, I wrote it. Took a proctor test. I had to take off everything. Well, not really, not everything, but I had to. Yeah, get off. Rid of all my electronics. They checked my.
You don't have your phone?
No, nothing. They checked my water bottle. Like the inside, like the label. Because I guess that was cool back in the day. Is to put.
Oh, our nursing school did that? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Just handed everything in. You're only allowed a pencil for what I was doing. But yeah, with you guys. You had a scrap piece of paper I saw, and you have to sign it.
Yeah. So like on the nclex, I know that a lot of nursing schools are kind of mimic the nclex. So it's like a whiteboard and an expo marker, right? What are you guys allowed in your testing center? So this is a great question. Like what are you allowed to have? And then like have that while you study. So Instagram, what are you allowed to have when you go and take a nursing school exam? So Proctorio.
Proctorio.
Is that like. Is that like an. That's got to be an online thing, right?
It's a Harry Potter test. Proctorio.
Harry Potter spell. What do you call it? They gave a girl an exemption to use headphones in my class. Okay, that makes Sense. I can definitely see that. Like. Yeah, I can definitely see hearing.
Yeah. Teacher provides scratch paper and a calculator. Cool.
Okay. Oh yeah, calculator for sure. I always forget about the calculator. You will get a calculator. Yes. For the NCLEX and for four year nursing school, exam school, hopefully you will get a calculator. Typically it's whiteboard, Expo marker or like, you know, piece of scratch paper and a pencil. You know what have you for that? Headphones. That is so funny. I'm gonna like go to bed.
Water bottle, no labels. Blue pen.
A 3B pencil. What's a 3B pencil? Is that like the standard number two pencil? I thought it was a number two. I've always. Is there something called a 3B pencil? Rubber like eraser, I'm assuming. And then scrap paper and a calculator.
Nothing. Sometimes water bottle unopened with the label taken off.
In pharmacology you can use your drug guide. Instagram. What?
Just a pencil and a simple calculator. I remember that like I had a graphing calculator back in the day and I used to play. Play games on it and they didn't like that.
Graphing calculators were so cool. And then you could. Yeah, you could do. I mean do you remember when like the. What is it called? The like T94 or whatever. I have mine. I have my T84 is mine. And like those were like the coolest things. Crazy. Okay. Are any of you. Is it.
Okay Barbie, Instagram saying something? YouTube. I want to double check with you guys. Can you use your drug guide on your farm exams?
That sounds crazy to me. I have never heard of a nursing school. Never heard of a nursing school. Allow you to use a textbook during your exam? Is that allowed? YouTube for any of you guys, Instagram. Anyone else? Is that allowed? I am so curious about that one.
Well, congrats on you then.
Yeah. That's pretty. That's better.
That's pretty cool.
Pretty cool. Yeah, I would say they probably don't care about headphones. That's small peanuts, man. That is funny. That is pretty amazing.
What? Last semester you did. No way.
It's the same school. You guys both mentioned your school name. It's the same. That is funny. For farm we can have a one page cheat sheet. Yes.
How big? How big is the page? That's my first question. Always my first question.
Poster board size.
How big is the piece of paper? And how small can you write? Those are the two questions you always ask.
How big is the paper? How small can you write?
I hack how to take tests.
That is so funny. I was never allowed to use a textbook or anything or notes or. I cannot believe this is a legitimate thing. Textbooks and not at my school. Study guides. Yeah. How big is the paper?
How big is the paper? And how small is your handwriting? Because I can write really small.
That is really funny. Eight and a half by 11.
Yep.
That is really great.
I can fit a whole book on that. A 3B pencil is a drawing writing pencil in Australia.
Latasha. You guys go to the same school? School. So that's why. Okay, so far, I only know of one school that allows that. As small as you can, as well.
As you can write. Okay, last question before moving on from that one, Gary. Does it have to be handwritten, or can you print out a sheet of paper?
Oh, can you type it? Wow, crazy. Crazy. I've never heard of such a thing, but that's pretty impressive.
It is interesting, though.
I.
Again, if you guys don't know, I'm not a nurse.
I have not gone to nursing school, by the way.
By the way, I'm just here giving you random tips. You can choose to listen to me or not.
Christina. I am a nurse. This is Matthew. He's not a nurse.
I'm not a nurse. But in college, my teachers did give cheat, like, a page of sheet of notes and things. And they say that there is a method to that madness and saying that, well, you still need to know what is the right information to put on that paper and all of that. So I guess there's something there I.
Can half get behind the drug guide thing, because when you are a nurse on the floor, you always have access to a drug guide. Like, always. So, I mean, I can see that they would want to test your knowledge and see how much you know. But then also, like, in reality, you are always going to have access to a drug guide, either in the med room or on your phone or wherever. I mean, drug guides are all over the place, you know, whatever facility you're in, man. I mean, where I was before, like, we literally had, like, I was. We literally had, like, all the textbooks, drugs, like, just right there. It was like. And, like, all the versions of the drug guide were just there, like, lined up. Like, do you want this year's? Do you want last year's? Like, they're all there. No one ever gets rid of the old one, so they're just there. So that's just kind of reality. Yeah, you're just gonna have books and drug guides all around. So for pharm, I can half see that.
Yeah. And I can half see the sheet of paper. Just because that's what I've been told. Back when I was in my classes in college. So it has to be handwritten and we have to turn it in. Yeah. So they can look at it.
You have to turn it in. Yeah, that makes sense. Alison can chill us right now. Me too. Oh, man. Except I'm glad that I'm done. I guess that's probably the biggest thing. Oh, man. Unless Christina decides someday to go back for something. It'll happen. It'll happen at some point.
All right, so what did we talk about? We talked about carving out a space. Making a space yours for studying quiet or noise canceling headphones or kind of. Just that kind of environment that you'll be taking tests in. I really like Alice's. Alison's tip about hard candy or gum and doing that. Are you allowed to have chewing gum in a proctoring center?
I would imagine. So, like, what are you gonna do? Like write on it and pull it?
Who knows? Who knows?
Someone's done it out there, I'm sure in the world. Two colored notes, right? Take one color. Use one color for your notes in class. Use another color for your notes from the textbook. Yeah. What did we miss as far as the summary? Yes. How did you prepare? Okay, yes.
Yes.
That was the question that I was going to touch on. I was just thinking about that in my mind. Okay, so do not read the textbook. Because I saw you guys were talking about it earlier and we were talking about something else. But anyway, do not read the textbook before class.
Christina's answering question from YouTube. Instagram. And the question is. Yes, how do you prepare? How do you prepare before lecture class?
Sorry, Instagram. I just started answering YouTube comments and I don't tell you what those.
How do you prepare before nursing class? Lecture class.
Yes, lecture class.
Before. Are you allowed to have masks? Cuz you can like write on them, can't you?
Oh, what?
I'm just saying.
I did not even think about that. That is so crazy. You guys are so just like, man, there's just, just. I don't. My brain does not think that way. I'm not like, hey, where can I write information on myself so that I can do better on this exam? No, like your mask. Have you guys seen anybody write notes on their mask? Is that a thing?
Don't do that, by the way. Do not do that.
Don't do that.
We do not condone any cheating, by.
The by, in the way I am so baffled by these things that you guys are telling me. Crazy.
All right, so back to how to prepare before lecture.
Class.
Class. Because the first thing you say, people are confused. Don't read the textbook before lecture.
Sorry, Instagram. Okay, here's. Okay, here's really the problem. Friends, who has taken a nursing school exam before? I'm gonna try to be super quick with this. Like, raise your hand, send up an emoji. Who has taken a nursing school exam and tell me how much from the textbook was on your nursing school exam. It's not a whole lot. Like, you are going to. Like, your exams are really going to focus on very specific things, right? So you are assigned, like, hundreds of pages to read every single week. And when you get to your exam, they're only gonna do. Yeah, Nothing.
Right?
Nothing. Like, nope. Nothing. Nothing is on. Nothing from the textbook is on your exam.
Guaranteed they will not ask you on page 53 on the third paragraph, what.
Was the word in the footnote?
That. That is not a question that you'll get asked on a nursing school.
It was mostly from lecture. Exactly. More module based. Thank you. Instagram. Nothing. YouTube. Yes, exactly. So carry 5% Alison tables from the text only. So, you guys, seriously, I do not understand why nursing instructors tell you all the time, read the textbook before the exam or before the exam. Read the textbook before class. Like, it's not helpful because that's not going to be on your exam. Okay? So you have to wait until you get to your lecture class to know what to study. So always study. Always focus on the things that your instructor talks about in class. That is like, you know, full stop. That is how you study for your lecture exam in nursing school if you are not inside the nursing SOS membership committee. The only thing I use the textbook rationale when there's a care plan and to help elaborate on a few things.
Yeah, that's a good. I like that term. Elaborate.
Elaborate.
Help. Elaborate. So, yes, you don't read it beforehand. You listen to your lecture and then you use a book to elaborate on what your teacher taught.
Talks about word of the day. Yes, exactly. That is what I do. Perfect. Yes. Instagram, highlight what she says. Great. Yes.
Very cool.
I'm glad you guys are all like. It's crazy, you know, like, who. It's practical.
Yes, that is practical. That's what we strive for here.
Practicality.
Practicality.
Yep.

We are here.
School. We are neuro. Next. Okay, so we have endocrine and neuro.
Okay, I'll write down neuro.
Writing it down. Yeah. So we're gonna try to like hit. Hit some topics on like how to study. Well, it sounds like most. So neuro and endocrine are both in med surg, so we can probably just do one on like med search. How do you study med surg? Because I don't want to just like dive into neuro or dive into endocrine and then you move on to another topic and it not be helpful for you. Right, Yes, I see you Instagram endocrine. Yes. So endocrine, neuro, we will talk about how to study those topics because they want it to be applicable to other things you're going to study in nursing school. I don't want you to like feel like you just got what you needed for one exam but then weren't able to apply it to other exams. That's not really helpful for you. So definitely want to talk because we are practical. We are practical.
That is what we strive for here is practicality.
You guys are fantastic. So yes, definitely. Well, also endocrine and neuro, we do have courses on endocrine and on neuro inside the nursing ESSENCE membership community. So if you are a member, please log into your dashboard. Find the. It's just in your dashboard right there. It's in like the whole med surge section. So endocrine, neuro, check it out. We can totally rebrand.
Would you guys like it to be called a VIP list? That makes me very excited. Who doesn't want to be a vip?
Join the VIP list.
Join the VIP list. It's no longer called a wait list. I am making a. A command decision.
