How to Take Notes in Nursing School | ASK ME ANYTHING SHOW

Nurse Christina Rafano shares note-taking strategies for nursing students: print PowerPoint slides three per page with space for handwriting, use two colors to separate lecture notes from textbook notes, and focus on lecture material for exams. She also covers handling cumulative exams and announces upcoming resources like a pharmacology database.

How to take notes in nursing school. That's the title. Hello.
Hello. Hello.
Hello.
Nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you. Say hello.
Happy Monday, guys.
Happy Monday. So if you don't follow the Cocomelon YouTube channel, do it, do it.
So we have a three year old and that's pretty much all we listen to. And we have all the kids songs now. So hello. There you go.
Nice to meet you and hello to all. Nice to meet you. Nice to greet you.
Oh, I don't know.
Or is it nice to meet you. Nice to meet you.
I would say probably repetitive. Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you. Hello and Hi guys. Hi. YouTube. Thank you for waiting. We saw you waiting in the lobbies,
the lobby of YouTube. The lobbies of YouTube.
And we also saw your questions. So we'll get to those right after we we answer a question from our members. But to everyone else, welcome to the nursing school show. Happy Monday.
I am Christina Rafano. This is Matthew.
We last names are married. Signal that we are married.
Or related.
Or related at some point.
Marriage, Marriage.
Related through the marriages.
Happy Monday.
Happy Monday. Happy Labor Day. I saw some discussions saying that some people do not have class but still have things to study. So welcome. Thank you for joining us. Anyway, you can always mute us and study in the background. Keep us on in the background or whatever. Or keep us in the foreground and study in the background. Whatever, whatever floats your boat.
Whatever you want to do on a Monday.
So our main topic of the day is how to take notes in nursing school.
Don't worry, I am prepared. How to take notes in nursing school.
How to take notes in nursing school. So we will get to that in just a second. But we do want to answer a question from our members. So members can always submit questions to us for these lives that we have every Monday and Wednesday and we want to answer those first. If you are not in the membership, membership is closed. But you can join the waitlist@nading schoolofsuccess.com join and you'll be first to know when it opens again. All right, on to the question. I was wondering why you don't have videos of the different classifications for pharm meds since your study tip videos focus on knowing classifications before studying individual meds.
Valid, valid question, Valid question, valid point. The simple answer is we're releasing the pharmacology database. It's not quite done yet.
Currently it is being released, so it is in progress. So you are correct. Currently in the membership there are not videos on different classifications. We are releasing the Meds.
But we have like, I think we're halfway done with the meds. So when you go inside the nursing. So when you go into your dashboard, if you're a nursing associate, you go into your dashboard for the membership community, click on pharmacology course, you will see a gazillion meds in there. That's only half of what, like I think we're about halfway.
A gazillion is a technical term.
It's a technical medical term.
Okay. It's slightly more than a Google.
A Google or an Oogle.
Well, okay, so funny fact. That's why Google is named Google because it actually is a number.
I had no idea.
So when we surpass the number, maybe they'll change your name.
But anyway, there you go. There's your fun fact for the day.
Fun fact.
So yes, it is, you know, we're
releasing it currently being released. So look forward to that because they will be getting released.
These are my excited.
This is my angry face again. We have a three year old and we like to practice our emotions and what he emotes. So this is my angry face.
His surprise face.
His surprise face. Yes.
It's a little less cute now.
When he was younger, I, I have to say it was a lot more cute now he is still cute. Still cute.
But, but all kids are cuter when they're like a year old, you know, and they go like oh yes. When they just learn their surprised face. Oh, he was adorable. All right, let's do him on note taking.
How to take notes in Nursing School.
Listen up guys. How to take notes in nursing get to it. So the first thing that you are going to want to do is make sure that you are prepared for class. Make sure you're prepared for class. So when, before you go to class, make sure that you have. If your school allows you to do PowerPoints like your instructors give you slides. What is the like Apple Slides thing? I always say PowerPoint. Does everyone know what I mean by PowerPoint?
I'd say that people in the Apple universe, you can correct me, but I'd say pretty much if even if you're using Apple, you still have Microsoft Office and, and Word and PowerPoint and all those main documents on it. Okay, There is a version of it for Apple, but I don't think anyone uses it.
We are not I people.
So yes, PowerPoint. Everyone knows PowerPoint.
Okay, so when I say PowerPoint, you know what I mean? Slides.
Write in the comments if you do not know what we mean and I will type Out a response.
It might not be what you need, but he'll type out a response. So this is what I mean by like PowerPoint slides, right? Like slides for your classes in nursing school. So I recommend, and I've always recommended it because this is what I did in nursing school is I printed them off three slides to a page. So three slides and then you have this nice like note section over here. Now, Matthew knows the technical it is.
I actually don't, but it is an actual print setting for like note taking.
Note taking.
So if you go to File Print, there should be options there for what kind of printing you want. How many slides to a page?
Yep. 3.
It's a drop down and then, yeah, it's like slide. It's like note taking or three or something like that. And there's a little print preview where you can see. Okay, that's what I want.
And make sure that you have. So make sure that you print it out. It will look blank. Like all of these have notes on them. So because I already wrote my notes out, this is from school. So make sure you print them out three slides to a page with the little note section on the side. So make sure you're prepared for class. What you will also want to do is make sure that you have two different colored pens. And I'm using XBONE markers too.
They show up better on tv.
Exactly.
On the tmv.
Yes. So make sure you use one color for taking notes in class and another color for taking notes from your textbook book when you. Oh, I used to say when you go home, but now I'm just going to say when you move to another room in your house, when you are
no longer in online lecture and tangent, caveat to this, all this applies to how we're doing nursing school right now. Even if you are online or taking it remotely, have your computer in front of you, we still recommend that you take it and print it out. So you'll have the sheets of paper in front of you and your computer in front of you with your teacher talking back at you.
Yes.
So that is the thing.
So even if you're in online classes right now, this is the same thing still applies. Take notes this way, print out your slides this way. Thank you, Matthew. Print out your slides this way and actually write things out. Don't just take notes on your laptop. We've had so many discussions about this on these AMAs. We're not going to go right now. But basically I pretty sure everyone has said, like everyone we have asked on these AMAs like takes like, loves taking notes. Like, you learn better when you physically write it out versus if you're typing it on in a laptop. So anyway, we're not going to go on that discussion. We have already talked.
Also, Arnie mentioned something really, a really good point. Most schools have the Office360 suite available to those students. So again, in our current situation, if you do not have office and like, well, I don't even have PowerPoint. Check with your schools. More than likely they'll offer it or a discount or something like that so that you have the programs available to you.
Perfect. Yes, we have PowerPoints even if we're running on a Mac. Sweet. So this will work for everybody. So PowerPoint slides three to a page lines. Now, like I said, make sure you have two different colors. They're not going to be expo markers. I'm just using this.
And they do not have to be pink and green. They can be colors of your choice.
I think pink and green are pretty good colors. Just kidding. So let's, for example, let's say you use pink during class. So when you are sitting your teachers on laptop, however, you know, if you are in class, that's fine. If you are learning online, that's totally fine too. Just make sure that you have your slides printed out and everything. Like, follow along in class with what your instructor is saying and write down in one color marker, one color, one color pen. Take your notes. And you're going to take your notes on the lines here. So you see how I wrote lines here, there kind of. I don't know if you can see
that, but could be a little bright.
But yeah, when you take on the PowerPoint sites, when you take notes in class, like from your instructor, what your instructor's saying, I always do it on the lined areas here and they do it in one color. And. And then after class when you go home, use a separate color, green, purple, blue, what have you, whatever. And then take notes from the book. Only focus on reading the sections of the book that were discussed in class. So use the PowerPoint as kind of your guide for that. So if it talks about it here on this PowerPoint slide, read about it in the book. If you need more clarification on it. So then any notes that you want to take from the book, you will write those notes along the outsides of the page. You see how I have like notes written up here at the top? Those were book notes and I can tell you that that's. Those are book notes because they're written on the top of the page, not on the lined areas. Now, I also recommend that you don't print your slides double sided because I like, always like to have more note taking space on the back. So these notes here are from the book and I know that because it's on the back of the page. That makes sense. So that is what I recommend now. So key here, make sure that you have two colors. One color for what you're learning about in class and the notes that you're taking in class. One color for reading the textbook, studying the textbook, and the notes that you take from the textbook after class. Now this is really important, friends. I know. It's kind of like, well, why would you use two colors? Here's the reason. Here's the reason why you would use two colors. When you are studying, you are going to prioritize the things that your instructors talk about in class. What they say in class is what they believe is the most important things for you to know and is therefore what is most likely to show up on your exams. Now, anything from the book is going to help you deepen that knowledge. It might word it a little bit differently to help you understand it better or faster, but we're going to prioritize the things that your instructors say in class because that is what they're most likely going to test you on. It's what they think is the most important Right. For you to know. So that's why we do it that way. It's really important to know, okay, what notes came from the book and what notes came from lecture class from your instructor. So that's why we do it that way. Now then you would go study, study, study.
So
that's really it. I don't. I was gonna think I was thinking about getting into final studying, but, you know, maybe we'll make that another. Yeah, I think that could be enough for one.
Yeah.
So if you want me to talk about final exams and how to study for midterm exams or final exams, can you let me know in the comments? So I know if you want me to cover that in an AMA here live, because I can do that. I was thinking about doing it today, but I think we're just gonna leave it at that today. And then maybe next week on an ama, we can talk about finals.
Yeah, I like that. So we'll, we'll schedule it out for everyone on YouTube. We do want to. We're gonna try and schedule out our lives and put topics on. What are the main topics we're going to talk About. So to recap with that, I did have a question about. About the taking notes. You said for the most part, you want to keep the notes for when you're in class on the lines. If you run out of space on those lines, what do you do? Just kind of.
If you run out of space on the lines. To be honest, I can kind of see it here. I wrote on the slides themselves, like the pictures on the slides. And really the thing about it, you know, here, same thing I write on the slides. Yeah, that was kind of funny. If you do find yourself consistently running out of space, I would. I would not. I. I would first get, like, a separate piece of notebook paper. Like, separate. Just lined notebook paper. Let's just say, for example, this is my lined notebook paper. And I would take notes from class on this before. I would take notes on. On the periphery and on the back. Just because. I mean, that is more clear to me. But just because I had been doing it for years, this system worked for me for years. So this is how I do it. But you figure out how it's best. Basically, the general idea is that you keep them separate and you know which notes came from where, which notes came from lecture class, which notes came from the book. Like, that is the most important thing. So it really doesn't matter. Like, this could be book notes for you. Whatever. This is just how I did it. So I took my lecture class notes here on the lines and on kind of the slides. You can see my, like, you know, scribbles here on the slides. And then the book notes were everything on, like, around the periphery and on the backs of the pages.
But really the most important thing are the two different colors. So you can clearly see what's from class, what's from your teacher, and what is from your book.
Yep.
And you want to prioritize the one from your teacher.
Correct. Okay, there you go.
Awesome.
That's how to take notes in class.
Any questions regarding that, go ahead and write them in the comments chat and we can answer those. As we're going through other questions for our AMA, there's a question in YouTube that I want to throw out to everyone because I am curious. Someone's asking who's actually in class. I think everyone is online now, if you. And I'm willing to bet that there.
No, we've had several.
There are people that are actually physically in class. So go ahead and write in the comments and chats if you are actually physically in. We want to know.
I have met several nursing students who are in class now?
Yeah.
Yep.
I wish our slides were formatted like that. Like what? Like with the way it's printed out. Because that is just a printing. A way you print it. It's in your printing settings.
So when you get your PowerPoint from your instructor, if you just go up to what? What is it?
Matthew?
File, print.
File, print.
And then you can choose your printing settings. Half in class, half online.
Yep.
I am in class.
I am in class.
Yes. There you go. See, there you go. There's lots of people in class. And I remember we talked to. Was it someone on YouTube a couple of weeks ago who had like a 12 hour class?
Oh, yes. Yeah, yeah.
12 hours, like two times a week.
50. 50.
Hey, Mandy.
Yeah. So there are a lot of different people, a lot of different places, a lot of different ways that you guys are studying.
Marjorie, I'm glad that your clinical is in person.
Nice.
That's awesome.
Be sure to ask lots of questions during the time.
Yeah. Who is in clinical physically? Tell me in the comments, like, you know, who is in clinical. Because I know that that's a big thing, like not going into the hospitals. My instructors don't give us PowerPoints. What do they give you? What do they give you? Send it on over online. Totally online.
Stone tablet.
Stone tablet with a chisel.
Chisels.
There you go.
I just joined, but do you have any tips on taking notes in the anatomy physiology book? Book just focused on. Oh, no, just focus on bolded terms. I'm strictly online. No lectures at all.
Bolded terms. Okay. So for man. Okay. I'm not even gonna speak to amp, to be honest with you, because I need to get my. Like, I need to make sure that I have my step by step study process down for that. Because it is different. I focus on teaching nursing students who are taking their core nursing classes. And so this applies to. If you're taking your core nursing classes like Fundamentals, Med, Surg, those things for ap, it might be a little different. I need to go back through my A and P stuff, make sure that I get my step by step study process down and then I can talk about it. But it's going to be a while until we actually. Although we don't really teach.
Yeah, we don't teach AMP a lot, but we do get a lot of questions about that. And really what we keep hearing is that it is a lot about rote memorization. With rote memorization for amp, your two guidelines is use whiteboards, use flashcards, and just repetition, repetition, repetition. Teach other people.
I Have pictures. I should post them. I have pictures of my whiteboards that I took because I'm like, oh, this is so funny and cool. Christina. Back in the day, so I would take pictures of my whiteboards when I was studying A and P and it's just like so, like so much. It's all just writing again and again and again.
Repetition again and repetition. Yeah. And yeah. Teaching other people. Yes. Hopefully we will come.
You guys will come in handy. I'm glad Christina will come in.
Candy.
I will.
For the ride.
Yeah. There you go. Med search starting next.
My grades went up because of this advice. Hooray.
So glad.
I wish I had this advice when I was in school. Not nursing school, not a nurse. But yes.
Hey, I have a quick question. I have a quick question that I have never asked. Matthew and I were just talking about
is it a real question or is it like a three year old where it could be just a statement?
No, it's a question.
All right.
Do you guys know before watching this ama, did you guys know that I was actually a nurse or did you think I was a nursing student? I know it's kind of a weird question, but I just realized last week that we never say that I'm a nurse in our YouTube videos. Like, I never say that. Right. And actually I remember when we started the YouTube channel, like, I didn't want it to, you know, I, I, you know, I just didn't, I just never said it. I thought you were a nursing student, so I am a nurse. I know. I get that all the time. People message us on YouTube and they say, good luck on your finals or good luck on your exam next week or good luck in med surge. And like, thank you.
So she doesn't know what she is talking about. She did pass. I did pass. The nursing schools and the nclex. Yeah, she does have letters behind her knees.
So funny. I never used.
But she never use.
I never use those letters. But there you go. I know. Yeah, I know. Yeah, I just told you that. Hey, Connie. All right.
Okay. For those just joining us, welcome to the nursing school show where we ask questions of Christina the nurse.
Hello.
And maybe I chime in once in a while.
Welcome.
We just finished talking a little bit about how to take notes in nursing school. If you have any more questions, go ahead and shoot them in the comments. We're going to get to other questions, our general AMA questions. Ask me, Christina, anything. We had a question when we first started. People can always ask questions in YouTube even before we go live and we'll go ahead and answer those ones. So this one, I'm taking med surg, maternal nursing, and pharmacology this semester, which is their second semester. I have an exam in two weeks. How do I ace exam? What does. Does working on practice questions help? My RN program is intense. I think that everyone's RN program is intense.
It really is intense. No, intense.
Yeah. I'm punny.
There's your pun for a Monday.
I'm punny. All right.
That's a lot. Med surge, maternal and pharmacology. Like you're doing maternity and med surge at the same time, or is it a med surg? Clinical. Maternal clinical. Med surge. What did I say? Med surg, lecture, Maternal, clinical, or maternal. You know, is what I'm saying. Lecture, med surg, clinical. Yeah. People are saying med surge is intense. There you go.
Yeah.
So, yeah, that's a lot to do in one. In one term. I have an exam in two weeks. How do I ace this exam? Does working on practice questions helps my RN program? Okay, I am. So what test are you taking? Are you taking a med search test? Are you taking maternal, or are you taking pharmacology? Or is it all
bed cert, maternal
lecture, farm, med search and maternal lecture. And farm. I need more clarification.
Yeah.
What's your. So med surg lecture and maternal lecture? So you have a test on. Does your school combine, like, you have a lecture exam on maternity and med surge together? I actually don't think I've ever heard of that. So there you go. Unless it's like, the NCLEX or like, a exit program where. Yeah, of course your. Your questions are going to be jumbled together, but like, like, you know, lecture classes are typically more separated out, so I just need more. My exams are based on concepts. Okay, I'm still not clear. So are your. You have blended exams, Is that what you're saying? Marjorie, your. If you have blended exams, then, yeah, you're gonna have to study with, like, the exit. Hessi. Right. For example, ati. You know, it's. It might be blended that way. Maternity, med surge and farm. Of course. Like, farm and med surge. You're gonna have farm questions on, like, all your MedSurg exams, but, like, maternity and med surge. Be a little. I. You know, I haven't quite heard of that. So really, what I was, you know, still recommend. The advice still stands. Make sure that you are studying for med surg and maternity in the way that we teach. So blended in the wafer. Nclex. Yes. That's what I was thinking. So make sure that you are studying for it in the way that we teach. Now, there are four main categories that you have to study. And everyone said yes, Christina, say this all the time. Pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, nursing assessment and nursing interventions. Four main categories. Pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, nursing assessment and nursing interventions. Make sure that you focus on those four, four main categories. Now, the same thing still stands for maternity. You would be amazed how many complications there are during pregnancy, during labor and delivery, postpartum. There's a lot. So those four things are what you're going to want to focus on for those as well. Pathophysiology, signs, symptoms, nursing assessment, and nursing intervention. What's happening? What's going on in the body? What are the signs and symptoms you're going to see? What is the assessment that you are going to do and then how are you going to fix it? Nursing interventions. So. Oh, okay, that makes sense. It's Maggie, we did that for pediatric and clinical or pediatric and maternal newborn taking med, surg and pharmacology in the first seven weeks and then maternity the next seven. That is what I've heard of a lot, but no, I think what we're talking about here is blended. Kind of like ATI or HUSI would be for, like a blended exam. You have it all like the nclex, Right. Like, when you don't want to take your nclex, it's going to be all mixed together. Right. You're going to have farm questions and med search questions and pediatric questions and dose questions and all the questions, maternity questions. They could throw anything at you. Right. So I think that's more of what we're talking about, if I understand it right. Is that your understanding, too?
Yeah, that sounds about right. So, yeah, it's all blended and kind of like the nclex, how all the questions are kind of just spattered in there and you don't really know specifically what topic they're testing for because it's all jumbled together. It's cumulative, I guess, is one term for it cumulative. So, yeah, I think definitely you need to study everything but exactly what Christina laid out, those four things to study through. And. Yeah, yep. I think that's. That's good.
Yep, absolutely. All right, so those are the four main categories. And still for maternity. I think we talked about this on a previous ama. Still for maternity, those four main things.
Those four main things. Okay.
Pathos, signs and symptoms, assessment and interventions.
Okay, very cool.
Does that help?
Hopefully that helps. If Not. You can add a little bit more detail. Someone is regarding note taking in nursing or nursing in nursing school. Note taking. They were saying that they're still having trouble studying and taking notes and they do not get PowerPoints. So I think we had that a couple times. The follow up question to that, if you do not get PowerPoints from your teacher, do you get anything? What do you.
Yeah. Where was that? I don't get PowerPoints.
This one's right there.
Okay. And then there was someone else that said they don't get PowerPoints. Let me scroll up on Instagram. Sorry.
So if you do not get PowerPoints.
I figured you were a nurse. That's funny.
Oh, they give us an outline and the chapters we need to.
To read. Perfect.
And we're supposed to read and talk about it when we get to class.
Okay. They give us an outline of the chapters we need to read and we're supposed to read and talk about it when we get to class. Okay. I've heard this a little bit differently. I've heard different things. Like different schools doing it different ways. So here's how I've heard it. So there's kind of three, three camps, right, that your school might fall in? I have heard that schools give you a PowerPoint or an outline or something and then they like before class, and then they expect you to read everything before class. I've heard that. So tell me, is that you? Is that your camp? Let's just, let's just do something old. Let's just. If that is you. If your instructors expect you to read everything before class, can you put a number one in the chat, please? Just put number one in the chat. Like the. Number one. Write a number one in the chat. If your instructors expect you to read everything before class. Number two, put a number two in the chat. If your instructors expect you to read everything during class, like during class, you're going to get into like groups of students. Just like this question said. They give us an outline in the chapters we need to read and we're supposed to read and talk about it when we get to class. So number two. Yeah, number two. All right, number three is where you go to class and you might preview or like, like, you know, high level. What it, what is it called? Like over. Skim. Skim. Skim is the word that I'm looking for. Like skim your book. Like your instructors might want you to skim your book before class and then. But you're going to like more read and study it after class. So that's number three. So tell me where you're at. Are you. Do your instructors expect you to read everything in the book before you get to class? Are you expected to read your chapters and study it with other people during class, or are you expected to read it after class? Tell me in the chat. And everyone, pretty much everyone, says it's a one.
One, which.
Here's the problem. This is the problem. Okay, so here's the thing. If you are spending all of your time. Someone said mixture of 1 and 2. If you are spending all of your time reading every single thing in the book before you get to class, you are not going to have time to study it. This is the problem. Christina getting on her soapbox for a Monday morning. So when you get. So here's what you're going to want to do. Same thing. When you get your outline, there can be kind of a few different things that your instructors can give you an outline. Modules. Who has modules? Raise your hand. Like, put up a raising hand emoji.
If you have serious.
Now this is getting serious. If you have modules in nursing school, put up a hand emoji, please. So it could be a PowerPoint, it could be a module, it could be a outline, it could be a. I've also heard study aids. I've heard the phrase study guides, hands, modules. See, here's the thing with modules. I think that modules are a. I think that's the word that most nursing programs use, because here's what I believe. Now, don't quote me on this. I'm going to check in on these things. I think it's an accreditation thing. This is what I heard from my nursing school, that they actually had to submit their stuff, like the program, the nursing program for accreditation had to submit their modules and everything they're teaching you in order to be accredited in the United States, which is where we are. So I think that's why modules are so popular. And it doesn't surprise me that everyone's saying that you have modules. So when you get your modules, okay, this is a fun little game. Can you tell me how soon before class you get your modules? This is very community right here.
Like, this is.
This is a back and forth conversation.
This is a nice.
This is a back and forth conversation. So this is active participation here. So can you tell me how, like right in the chat, do you get your modules? PowerPoints, stack, study aids, whatever. Like a few days before class, A week before class? How many weeks before class? Like, tell me, like how many days or how many weeks before class? Do you typically get your modules, study aids, PowerPoints, study guides, what have you? Depends on the instructor. One week. Oh, someone said study reading. A reading guide. That's a new one. Yeah. A week before. So I get the module for the next week at the end of the lecture. Oh, that's cool. So like, at the end of your lecture, you get the module for next week. Week. That makes sense. So yeah, one week. I would say about one week, two to five days, maybe the week of.
My program has all the modules for the whole semester.
In the beginning, that's that. We were kind of. We. We kind of did that too. Our program did that kind of too. A few days before class. So I'm not seeing anyone say like the day before class, which is good. So can. Can if anybody's. Like, my instructor doesn't give us anything until the day before class. If you are that person, can you please tell me as you walk in
the door, here's your module.
I wouldn't put it past. I. I would. I have heard a lot of crazy things and I wouldn't put it past Same. Everything is already in there. Okay, cool. So that makes sense. So like, for the term, you already have everything for it. Cool. So that's really what you're going to want to do. You have now a week of buffer time. Right? A week of buffer time. You get your PowerPoints a week ahead of time. If your instructor is requiring you, wanting you to read every single thing in the book before you go to class, what are you gonna do? You're not gonna do it? You're not gonna read? Seriously, look how big this thing is. You are not going to be able to read all of this in 10 weeks, 16 weeks.
And retain the information.
And retain the information. Of course you could. Yeah. Thank you, Ma. You could totally read it. You could totally read it all just for the sake of reading. Like, I don't know how fast of a reader you are. You could totally read all of that in 10 weeks if you really wanted to. However, when was the last nursing school exam that you took that tested you on facts? When was the last exam you took the tested you on facts and just things from the textbook? No, no, no. They test you on how you can apply the information, you. Your critical thinking skills about it, and how you can put concepts together. Right. They're not text texting. They're not testing you on just random facts from the textbook. Never, Charlotte. Thank you. They never do that. So you have to actually not only read the textbook, not all of it. Just what we tell you to not only read the sections of the book that you talk about in class or on your modules or power points, but then you have to actually take that information and apply it and critically think about it and put the puzzle pieces together and put the concepts together. Hey, Matthew.
Yes.
We have a whole critical thinking cheat sheet for these beautiful people out here on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.
Critical thinking wave.
If you go to nursing schoolofsuccess.com forward slash, critical thinking. We have a critical thinking cheat sheet for. For you.
There it is.
Matthew will post it in the YouTube chat right now. You are on YouTube. You've got it in the chat. If you are on Facebook or Instagram, head on over to YouTube chat.
I also saw here that we have a playlist.
Oh, yeah, go ahead.
I'm gonna throw that in there, too.
So we've done a couple YouTube just say, like, playlist, just so they know the difference. Oh, Judy, you say all modules are up for most of your courses. Cool. Can you type it in the box? I cannot type it in the box on Instagram because that we, like. I should really take a picture of how our, like, setup is here. Like, we've got three cameras literally staring at our face and a desktop computer. Like, this is. This is serious fun. This serious deal we have going on right here.
I only control the YouTubes.
Yep. And then Facebook and Instagram are on the phones, so we've got cameras all over. So there you go. Can we find this on the nursing SOS account or membership? I'm assuming you're saying yes. So it is inside the membership community. If you are a nursing SS member, go to your dashboard and the critical thinking cheat sheet is there for you under T sheets. And I think it's also in the bonus section. So there you go. Check it out there. Charlotte's laughing at us.
Of course.
Hello from the uk.
Hello.
All right, so that is that. Make sure that before you start school, if your instructor wants you to read everything in the textbook before you get to class, please don't do it. Just because I want you to have sanity in nursing school and I want you to have a life in nursing school. And I don't want you to feel overwhelmed or stressed. Stressed or anxious or all of these things that we typically associate with nursing school. Right. That is not what we do here. I do not want that to be you. So make sure that when you get to class, you are focusing before you get to class, if your instructor is recommending you, wanting, requiring you to read Every single thing in the book before you get to class. Then print off your PowerPoints, print off the modules, print off everything they have, and then focus on reading those sections. So like we just said at the beginning of this, if you. If you want to. If you want to go, go back in this video. I don't know, it was about like 9:05 or something. Is like very early in this in the ama. Go back through and look up my little mini lecture on how to take notes. So. But you will go through these slides, go through your modules, go through the outlines, and then focus on reading the sections of the book that apply to the those things. That is what you would do. Same advice. It's just before class rather than after. Cool. Does that make sense? Everybody? We good?
Yeah. So don't read everything in the book.
Yep. Core takeaway of the day.
Core takeaway.
Golden's like, yes, it made sense. Sweet.
All right, so hold on.
Awesome. Such a time saver.
So we actually have a couple comments about note taking and whatnot. So we'll hit these off really quickly and then come back to another person that had a comment. But I want to do these ones really quick first. So those of you that the professor just reads the PowerPoint verbatim. Hold on. We'll get to that in a sec. But other comments about just note taking. So. So let's see. Hi. As per the recommended textbook, all new video. Can you upload a video on how to use textbook? I'm new to nursing students, so how to research using a textbook. So I think we can dive in that a little bit more. Maybe later.
But can you upload a video on how to use the textbook? Would that be helpful? Would you guys like a video for me on how to use how to use a textbook? How to actually study a textbook. That sounds like it would be very helpful.
Okay. All right, so, but yeah, again, core takeaway that we just got done talking with. Don't read everything.
Don't read everything.
There we go. Hi. First semester of fundamentals. I'm struggling with completing course readings and taking notes. What are your tips? Those are the tips that we've just been going over.
Yep.
Don't read everything. And taking notes is pretty much this whole video. So there we go. Hey, guys, I. I am taking the health assessments class in nursing school. Do you have any tips for the actual lecture? We will be doing labs in person. Only six of us. And then actually, someone mentioned a little earlier, where is it about health assessments as well? Oh, here it is. So, yeah. Any Recommendations for studying health assessments. I have my first health assessment next week.
Oh, yay. Okay, so here's the thing with fundamentals and with the health assessment that I really, really love is that you will most likely have two classes. You will have your health assessment classes class, health assessment class, where you will learn the head to toe assessment, lecture stuff like normals, some abnormals, things like that. Then you will have your skills on top of it. And in skills lab, that's all you're doing is practicing. Now, I think here's where students might be getting a little bit confused with the head to toe assessment. In lecture class, you have your head to toe assessment and you have to learn, of course, all the normals, kind of some of the abnormals, if they teach the abnormals. Because mostly the head to toe assessment is all about what's normal. In fundamentals, it's all about what's normal. And then when you get to med surg, you learn, okay, now I know what's normal. Then you, in med surg, you move into what's abnormal, what can go wrong. Right? So ignore this. This says pathophysiology. Ignore that title. This is what I want to show you. The whole series, the Made Incredibly Easy series is so good. And they have a whole textbook. And when I say textbook, I mean this is so easy. Like it's short, it's sweet, it's easy to understand. Ignore pathophysiology. They have a whole one for the nursing assessment. So what you're looking for is Assessment made Incredibly Easy, or Nursing Assessment made Incredibly Easy. I don't entirely know what it's called, but there is a nursing assessment version of the Made Incredibly Easy. So it's like Nursing Assessment made Incredibly Easy assessment, Something like health assessment, maybe. So I would totally get that book. If you are at all confused about your head to assessment.
Yeah, this person says that I, I find that I'm overstudying, going too deep into the material.
Oh, yeah, for sure. Yeah, I, I think that's a pretty common. That's a pretty common thing. Oh, wait, do I have it here? Oh, wait a minute. Wait just a minute.
Oh, there you go.
It's called Assessment made Incredibly Easy. I have textbooks just everywhere. I tell you what, these are all ones that I used in nursing school, so there's probably a newer version. I don't know if you need the newer version. This is version version used. 5th edition. 5th screenshot. Take a screenshot. Take a screenshot. All right, post that on Instagram with Matthew's face all right, tag me in it. Here's assessment made incredibly Easy. Get that book. Oh. Oh, no, I'm actually sorry, I'm not
quite done what I was going to. Not done.
That's for, like, if you need help memorizing stuff, but then also with memorizing things, make sure that with the health assessment, the head to toe assessment, you are practicing. That is gold. That is where it's really going to come together for you. And I know that we're in this online environment. That's totally fine.
I remember. I remember when you did that.
Yep. It was like she practiced on me all the time.
But, hey, it helps.
There you go. Practice on a human person if you can. If you have. If you do not have someone around available to help you with that, then a teddy bear. We have a dog.
We. We have Bruno the bear.
Did you ever practice on Bruno the bear?
No. Bruno the bear, he was from Circus Circus. If you guys know Circus Circus, he's a teddy bear. If that can't be. He's like 4ft tall. So anyway, I also have a 4 foot tall Barney from Circus Circus. So anyway, that's. That has nothing to do here and there, but you could have assessed Barney as well. So. All right, back to notes and PowerPoints. This is a good one. Would you say before lecture to use the PowerPoints to take notes out of the book or first?
Yeah, that's what we said. Would you say before lecture, use the PowerPoints to take notes out of the book first? Yes, that's what. That's exactly what we were talking about. Did this question come in after I talked about it or before? Okay, I just want to make sure that I was super clear about that, because that's actually the exact question that I answered. Right. When you. If your instructor is wanting you to read the book in its entirety before class, remember, you're not going to read the book in its entirety before class. But what you will do is, just like we said, someone asked about the Merck manual. I saw how to use the Merck manual. That's a good question. So you will print off your PowerPoints just like this. And then before class, what you're going to do is just go through the sections of the book that are on the PowerPoint.
Right.
So if you don't understand something, that's what you're going to do, because this is what's going to direct your instructor during class. Use your PowerPoints. I hope that makes sense. All right, tell me if that makes sense. This is a very interactive ask Me anything today. I love it.
All right, and another question about PowerPoints and note taking. Since we are on the note taking
kick, let's do it.
What do I do when the professor just reads the PowerPoint? So I never know what to focus on other than the 130 slides of from the PowerPoint.
How many slides do I have here? 130. Actually doesn't sound like very many.
Yeah, so let me read it verbatim. This is from Instagram. Okay, question. I followed your guidelines regarding lecture, taking notes and what to do after. Unfortunately, my professor literally just reads the PowerPoint. So I never know what to focus on other than 130 slides from a PowerPoint.
So this is like 60 slides right here. And this is one class or like one class a week. I don't remember if that was like one week. So 60 sites? Like half. I think it's totally doable. I mean, it's just. It's the same thing, right? Like, it's just that your instructor is not expounding on those PowerPoints, but you still have the PowerPoints to direct you, and then you would read the sections of the book that are covered in your PowerPoint. Now, what I should have clarified this whole time, which I'm now just realizing, if you're a nursing SOS member, you can do that if you want. But if you are a nursing SOS member, what you can do, because you have our membership community, is you can look at your PowerPoint. If you don't understand something, you can pull up the video of me teaching it to you. So that's how you do that. Does that make sense? So you can read the textbook if you want, but you can also pull
up a video of me to show it to you.
There you go.
All right, very cool. Let's go. For those just joining, welcome to the Nursing School Show. If you have not realized by now we are answering nursing school questions, thus an ama, we were talking. Our main topic of the day is how to take notes in nursing school, which is what we've been talking about a lot. However, we have a bunch of other AMA questions. So let us get to those. If you have any more questions, pop them down below, up around, wherever you want to talk them.
Future nurse Bri. Hello. Any ways to study for the health assessment? I just covered that, like literally seven minutes ago. I really recommend this book, but then I also talked about some other things. So after the replay, you'll definitely want to catch the replay on YouTube. Matthew timestamps the YouTube videos after the fact so, like, 24 hours later. Right. Typically are like, you know, depending on what's going on, you know, we go back to the YouTube videos and timestamp it. And when I say we, I really meant him.
Yes. I think I am all caught up. So it takes a little while to get through those. But, yeah, we are all caught up. Usually it takes around a day for YouTube to let me do that. So when I can, I do update the timestamp. So definitely go back to our other AMAs, too, because we have a lot of good topics on other artists. Our other AMAs and all topic lists are there as well.
Yeah. So you don't have to dig through the whole video if you don't want to.
All right, Quick, quick answer for a quick question. How many hours do you study each night?
How many hours do you study each night? Study for two hours for every hour you are in class. So if you are in class for three hours, you will study for six hours out of class. And that is not a day. That is per week.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
What is the best way to remember immunization schedules?
Flashcards and whiteboards for memorization? Anything that is just rote memorization. Flashcards and whiteboards repeated again and again and again.
Okay. Psychiatric mental health tips.
Same thing. Flashcards and whiteboards. Because psychiatric and mental health is so much. It's so much based on medications, and then also a lot of it is just memorization. And you also have to understand slight differences and nuances between disorders because some things are very, very similar, but with some very stark differences. So flashcards and whiteboards will help you out with that. And then compare and contrast charts, which I would do on a whiteboard. So, whiteboard, get out your whiteboards. Get out your Costco whiteboards. Got two of them.
Yes.
Get out your whiteboard. Write out compare and contrast for the med search. Med search for the mental health disorders and things so that you can see the similarities and the differences between those things.
Great.
There you go.
All right, more. Slightly more in depth question. We've talked about this kind of topic in previous AMAs, but I do want to cover it every time I go to one of my nursing classes. There are a group of people that are always complaining about their fears. How do you block that out?
Complaining about their fears? Like. Like what fears? Like, they're gonna fail.
So I guess. I guess more generally. And if you want to expand that on YouTube, this question from YouTube, you can definitely expand on that. Yeah, they're gonna fail. Yeah. So how do you block out negativity, I guess is the general topic there. How do you block out negativity? It doesn't sound like you're getting into that and you want to just escape that negativity mindset because it can bog you down. But you hear other people being negative, so how do you escape that? So we have talked about in the past you yourself being negative or kind of getting into that negative mind space. But how do you block it out if you hear it all around you and there's other. Other people around you that are talking negatively?
Do you remember what I did in nursing school? He's like, I hate it when you say that because I don't really remember. So when I was in nursing school, this is a big problem. This is a big problem because you don't want your environment to impact how you are thinking.
Right.
You want to control your brain as much as possible. So here's what I would do before exams and before lecture class. Show up right on time or slightly late?
Slightly late.
I never heard of that information. I know that's weird advice you don't have. Like, if your instructors really don't want you to be late for class, obviously, like, just show up right on time. Right on time. Because if you show up early, then you're just in the whole environment of students freaking out about their next exam, right? Or if you go to your lecture exam or however go to your exam and then everyone's standing around outside of the exam room. If you take exams now in a physical place, not online, everyone's standing outside that exam room, all psyching each other out. Right. Everyone's getting so anxious and nervous and ah, you know, so honestly, for me, I just show up right on time. Right on time. So I miss all that. By the time I get there, everyone's in the exam room already. Yeah. Of course, sometimes I would be early because if I wanted to like study or catch up with a friend or stuff, but oftentimes right on time is slightly late. There you go. I don't think at my school it wasn't a big deal during class, so I was always early to class. Where this was a big deal was lectures years for me. So I would always be on time for class. I would actually be early to class because it wasn't that big of a deal for me for class. Like students wouldn't be usually doing that. It was just more like.
So I'm also curious, is this like just during study group too? Because again, well, we did ask this Question earlier. And there are people that are going to class on in person and that there is that time of sitting around, standing around. Is this also during study groups or whatnot? So since you guys are now online or some people are online, groups of people. Because I want to know, because I haven't seen anyone in like months. So that being the case. Yeah. Just what kind of situations is this happening? And I think primarily the thing is you can't control other people. You can just control yourself and your circumstances in your position. So that's what Christina was talking about. Since you can't control where they're at and what they're talking about. Control when you're getting there to limit your exposure. If that is. If that's really negative and you really can't stand that, just limit exposure, I'd say, is a really good piece of advice. Know your strengths. Know how much you can take and control everything else around you that you can and control yourself to psyching yourself up with your own positive thoughts too. Positive thinking may sound a little bit woo woo. It is maybe a little bit woo woo, but it does go a long way to put you in that Right mindset still.
I don't think it's woo woo at all, really. I mean, when you think of, like thinking, like controlling your thoughts, really. I mean, you know, we're called to, you know, be aware of our thoughts and submit them all to Jesus.
Right. I like this from Facebook. I like to listen to the local Christian radio station or a Christian meditation podcast to block out negatives. Nellies. Negative Nellies.
That's awesome. Yeah, I listen to Caleb all the time. I love Kayla.
So.
So, Caleb, what's the other one? Way fm. Those are. I think they're two big, like, nationwide ones. I don't know. There's probably others, but I listen to Kayla.
Yeah. Focus on your own. Your own self.
Yep.
As far as getting in that right mind space, the quote that I keep saying over and over again, it's hard to be nervous when your heart is on service. So recognize why you're going to nursing school and why you're studying and succeeding in nursing school.
And that was Rory Vaden, right?
Yes. And that was. That was Rory Vaden. Yeah.
Hard to be nervous when your heart is on service. Thank you, Rory Baden.
Hopefully. Hopefully that helps. Yeah, it's tough.
It's definitely tough, like when you are in an environment of like, you know, my. All the negativity and all the, you know, that's okay. Have you guys watched the video that I have on YouTube about the biggest nursing school lies. If not, go look it up. So YouTube. Go to YouTube. Type in the search bar. Nursing SOS lies. Nursing. Nursing SOS lies. Nursing SOS like, nursing school lies. We do not lie. But yes, nursing SOS lies. Like diving into YouTube and then that video will come up about the biggest nursing school lies that just are so proliferative. Anyway, it'll help you a lot. There you go. Yeah, thank you. I will try those. I will focus on myself. Show up. Show. Show up early and block it out. Well, yeah, you could show up early or show up.
I like the showing up late part. That's fine. But then again, not a nurse, so there you go. Not for. Not for. Not of lack of trying. I never went through nursing school or tried to go through nursing school. That was just not my jam. So.
Nope.
Yep. I just married one. I just married one, so that's good enough for me.
That's great. Small or big whiteboard?
Yes, I have been seeing those. So what kind of whiteboard? Small. Big. We have a giant one here. Yeah, Costco.
Huge. I mean, when I think huge, like, that one's what, 18?
That's honestly not that big.
Is that really nothing?
That's really not that big.
Are there bigger ones?
Two foot by three foot? They're. They are the big ones at Costco.
Okay.
Two.
Two feet by three feet. That sounds like a ginormous whiteboard.
I know. Like, some people get, like, the actual ones from classrooms or.
Oh, like the wall.
Yeah, the wall ones. If you really want to get serious, there's actually paint that. You can paint a whole wall that turns it into whiteboard. Not necessarily recommending that.
That's Nursing School 4. I am. That's great.
Really. It's again, about repetition and writing it down. So a big one just helps because you can write it more times before you have to erase it. So, yeah, go big or go home.
Go big or go home. So what do you do then, man?
What do I do, man? I sit here and talk to you guys and pretend that I know what I'm talking about. That's what I do.
He's there. He's here for the community value.
I am.
There you go.
I'm here for the laughs and giggles.
I love it. Can you please let us know when the membership community will open? I've been waiting. So it will open.
I don't know,
because we don't really have a point. We don't plan ahead, friends. Oh, man. I tell you what. Get on the waitlist yes, get on the waitlist that you are the first to know when enrollment opens.
We are focusing on, like Christina said, getting more of the medication database out in membership. So there's a couple things that we want to do. I'm working on getting all the YouTube collection from the public space in the membership in an easily searchable spot. So yeah, long story short. Long story short, we are working on improving the membership and getting a couple more of those things in there and then we'll probably open after that. So it is closed right now, but get on the wait list. We don't know exactly when it will open, but it will, which is exactly
why we close it because we are so member focused. We're always improving for our members, which is why we close it. It's closed for the vast majority of the year so that we can focus on our nursing assistant.
There you go.
All right, sweet. Friends, on Wednesday we are going to talk about how to study pharmacology, how to learn meds faster. So I hope that you are here for Wednesday when I talk about pharm and how to study pharmacology and how to learn meds faster. It's going to be amazing. So please stay tuned Wednesday, come on over. 9am Pacific.
9am Pacific.
We will be right here. It is up on YouTube already, the pre live. So if you have any questions, just like today, I know we got a bunch of like questions and things before the live before the AMA today. So if you guys have questions for us, make sure that you post it up on our YouTube channel. Go into our YouTube and view the upcoming live streams and then submit your question in the chat on the live stream for Wednesday. It's at 9am Pacific Standard Time, 12pm Eastern, 9am Pacific, 12pm Eastern. Every single Monday and Wednesday. We are here with you.
So how do we join the waitlist? Just a quick question from YouTube. So I'm going to throw the, throw the Link down in YouTube if you want to join the waitlist.
The membership community wait list is nursing school of success.com forward/join. So hope to see you inside when it opens.
Also, on Facebook, someone just commented a giant question here. So I know that we're wrapping up right now. I will read that after this live and we won't want to capture it all. So I will take a look at that and hopefully we can address it on Wednesday or sometime soon. So all right, five, four, three, two.
We'll see you guys on Wednesday. Take care, guys. Bye bye. Bye.
