Heparin is monitored with PTT (the two T's form an H), while warfarin uses PT and INR. A memory trick: Coumadin plus PT equals ten letters, as does Heparin plus PTT.

Here are some lab values to assess with warfarin and heparin. These are two really important ones to know for the nclex. So for heparin the lab value you'll want to check for is the PTT level. So we want to monitor the PTT level for heparin and you can remember this by looking at the two T's in PTT and they kind of make that H in heparin. So that's a fun memory trick for you to help you out that also I like to use the rule of 10 so there's 10 letters in each of these combination of the medication name and the lab value that you'll check for. So for warfarin which is also called Coumadin you want to check the lab value pt, the pt and the INR lab values. So for Coumadin pt and Heparin ptt they each have 10 letters in that combination so you can remember Coumadin pt and Heparin Ptt. Remember the rule of time.
