Christina Rafano and Matthew teach nursing students how to tackle medical-surgical nursing by focusing on four pillars for each disorder: pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, assessment, and interventions. They introduce the DRC framework for critical thinking and stress the Pareto principle: study what instructors emphasize, not every detail.

Going live.
I'll start.
Hello, hello, hello.
Hello, everyone.
Welcome to the nursing school show.
Happy Wednesday.
Happy Wednesday.
All right, there we go.
We're live on Instagram. Still like that commercial. It's been a while, but I still like that commercial. How is it going, everyone? Yes.
Who doesn't like a gimmel? Come on. Okay, friends, today in this edition of
Math nursing school show.
Trying not to say ridiculous things in my videos so late at night.
We can do that too.
We are talking about med surge in nursing school. Hi, Mackenzie. Hi, Marshall. Hi, everyone from the Bahamas.
Oh, all right. Marshall's fun.
Pray.
Starting it off. Starting off. Yeah, Marshall's starting off. So let's see, where is everyone from? Marshall's in the lead so far. From the Bahamas.
Okay, where is the coolest place? Okay, who is here from the coolest place? And I think Marshall.
And while that's going on, has anyone tried this? This is the Coca Cola Starlight. Tastes like space. Apparently space flavored. Anyone try this? I'm curious.
And Matthew says that space tastes like.
Well, I know I've heard that space tastes like raspberries, but this tastes like Starburst.
He says it tastes like Starburst.
And you know what? We were just talking about, like, the smaller cans, which is really cool because it makes you feel like a giant. It really does.
So it's kind of rather than the. How many ounces is that? Seven.
Ten.
Wow.
Seven. Oh, it's even smaller. All right, let's see. So we have text.
Hi, Downey. Nice to see you again. New York City, Ontario, Canada.
The United States. All of it. Okay. South Florida. Awesome. Hello. Welcome guys. Austin.
Austin.
Philadelphia. Born and raised.
Two Philadelphias. Hello. Do you go to the same school? Georgia. Hi, Marcos. All right. Hi, Cherish.
Let me know if you guys have tried this.
Lauren. Nice to see you guys. Instagram. Why so glitchy? Instagram always me and Instagram. We are not best friends that much.
So let's see. I think. I think Bahamas are still taking the cake right now, guys.
So yeah, Bahamas is the coolest place. Let's just be real. India. Cool. That's pretty cool.
It's pretty cool.
Denver, B.C. in Canada. Already have an interview. Woohoo. Congratulations. Graduating Boston.
Okay, well, welcome everyone from wherever you are.
At Aloha, Hawaii, we are going to
be talking about Med Surge. All things Med Surg. If you have any questions Med Surge related, go ahead and pop them in the comments below.
And look, Christina has visuals.
Visuals. And remember, this is an interactive experience, so be sure to comment anything you'd like. We will take comments.
Take comments, read comments. Happy ones.
Yes, happy ones.
Yep.
Happy Wednesday. Comments.
You can throw some hate in the comments.
Aloha, Hawaii.
Yeah, I always tell people, I always joke about that. Like, well, I feel if, you know, post some happy comments, but also if you're unhappy, just feel free to leave a comment because it pushes our videos out more.
Yeah, you know what? It's funny. There is a YouTube channel that I watch and, like, sometimes he just says some pretty ridiculous things and he says, all right, people are gonna get in the fight, so fight in the comments. So it helps me out.
Yeah, so there you go. Don't fight in our comments. If you have something not nice to say, say it to me. Don't say it to anyone else on the live. I can take it.
We have a pretty uplifting crowd.
Happy Wednesday.
So we appreciate all of you guys.
What is med surge? Great question.
I think we should probably start off with that.
Start there. I don't know if I've ever actually answered this question. Med surge is the fancy abbreviation for medical, surgical nursing, which basically means everything. Uh, I'm just. Let's just leave it there. So basically, on a med search floor, you will. You. You will basically see everything. It's kind of like. How do you explain a med search floor? It's kind of your catch all floor. You'll see. Depending on maybe your med surge might. Your med search floors might be divided up into kind of specialty floors. I've been on like a neuro med search floor before. Or an orthopedic. Orthopedic med surge floor. So then you get, you know, you get. Let's see, we had patients, you know, who had brain surgery and were coming onto the neuro med surge floor after that. Or patients who had hip surgery were coming on, you know, the orthopedic floor after that. But med surgis, kind of like, you know, you. You get kind of a little bit of everything.
Riley, I like your comment. It's a snow globe. Shake it up and see what you get.
That's great. That is a great description of med surg. Riley, I am going to use that again and again and again. I'm sure. Shake it up and see what happens. Exactly.
So in relation to nursing school, then when we're talking about med surge as a topic, what are we. What are we talking about?
So, med surg, you're gonna learn pretty much all the disorders that you need to know. So we're talking cardiac disorders, heart failure, hypertension, cad, coronary artery Disease, pvd, peripheral vascular disease, and then respiratory and renal and endocrine and GI and neuro and all the stuff. And then you'll learn some mental health here and there because mental health goes into all of it. And then you'll learn a bunch of pharmacology because pharmacology goes into all of it. So just like Riley said, shake it up, shake that snow globe up, see what happens. That is med surge. So yes, it's basically all the disorders that you're going to learn.
What does it not cover in nursing school? So nursing school is question conglomeration of everything you need to learn to become a fantastic nurse.
Yep.
So there's med surgt coverage.
Not definitely covers hematology and immunology. Cherish. Yes.
Because like we talk about like fundamentals, right?
Yeah.
I mean it technically is part, but
yeah, it's not going to cover your fundamental stuff. So for example, like you're going to take fundamentals first, right? Who doesn't take fundamentals first? That would be crazy.
It is called fundamentals.
Yeah. You can't just jump into med surge without taking fundamentals. So you take fundamentals first. Of course. You know, you learn your head to assessment and intake and output and this nursing theories and all the fun fancy things you learn in fundamentals and then you apply those things in med surg. So like you still use the nursing assessment in med surg. You still, obviously you still use the critical thinking skills that you kind of sort of developed in fundamentals in med surge, but you're not actually kind of, you're not learning about the head assessment in its entirety. I guess you're learning focused assessments because you're learning how to do a focused assessment on let's say the cardiac system. When you're learning about cardiac. Right. So it is really, I mean it really just is a catch all.
Yeah.
I don't know, maybe that wasn't a very helpful description for you, Valerie, but I think Riley's description was way more helpful than mine was. Dina the diva. Woohoo. Just found out I passed med surge. Boom.
Congratulations.
Matthew always says don't clap into the mic and I always clap into the mic. Sorry if I just blew out your eardrums.
Very cool.
Yeah, congratulations. Sarah's asking what's our drama? What's what drama?
I don't know. There's always drama.
There's always people on our YouTube channel that are like, you talk too much or I don't like your voice or
she moves her hands too much, you
move your hands Too much, do you?
We don't really get that as much anymore.
No, I think they just, I. I think that they just went away.
They just know what's expected.
Yeah. People know what to expect.
Yeah.
When they watch a video of me, I'm going to talk too fast. I'm going to, you know, use a lot of spirit fingers and jazz hands and it's gonna be a lot of fun. That's what you can expect when you watch our YouTube channel.
I just got my med search book and it is bigger than an encyclopedia.
Well, yeah, encyclopedia. Yeah. That is why we have our membership community, because you don't want to read the whole textbook me root, I promise you. So that is going to save your life. Yeah.
All right, so we got a question here. I think is an app question to how do I survive med surge? And then, Sarah, how did. How did you answer questions during a med surg exam?
So that's such a.
There are those two questions. So.
And with new root, actually, I'm going to take your comment. I'm going to turn it into a question. How do you get through the textbook? Spoiler alert. You don't. So let's jam on it. So how to pass med surg? So like we said, med surg is kind of this catch all class, right. You have several of them Normally, Med Surg 1, 2, 3, maybe Med Surg 1 and 2, depending on how your school divides it up. So you are really thrown a lot. There's a lot of things that are thrown at you that you have to know in such a short amount of time. So. So the reality is, is that you cannot learn at all when you're in nursing school. So you have to learn how to study more effectively and efficiently and not waste your time studying. Because where a lot of nursing students get stuck and caught up in is trying to read the entire textbook, trying to know all the things about all of the things, and they end up not doing as well on their exam as they wanted to or they end up failing. And honestly, there is good reason for that, because if you are trying to learn everything in nursing school, you are really going to struggle because you're not going to give yourself enough time to be able to critically think through the information that you're learning. That is, everything in nursing school is critical thinking. So making sure that you are taking the time to learn the material that you learned about in class and then also give yourself the time to apply that information to, you know, what you are learning, you know, apply what you're Learning and critically think about it. You know, do some practice questions. Try to get your, you know, come up with questions yourself in your mind. Do concept maps, which we'll talk about. You know, we have a critical thinking model that we can talk about too. You have to do these exercises to really help all of the topics come together for you, rather than just trying to memorize everything in the textbook, because that is not going to help you.
So there's just a lot of information. There's too much information. I mean, like, you're going to be learning even after you graduate from nursing school. There's just so much information out there. So the trick is finding what's important to study.
Yep.
Right. Figuring out what's important and studying that and learning that and critically thinking about that. I know there are perfectionists out there, and I'll say I. I'm not a nurse, didn't go through nursing school, but just school in general. I've definitely on. On the side of the perfectionist and want to learn everything and want to make sure that I know every single little thing, because who knows what they're going to ask. But that. That just leaves you down a rabbit hole of, well, you're never gonna learn everything, so I guess you're just gonna get stuck just trying to learn everything and not accomplishing much.
And getting stuck is a great phrase. You just get stuck.
Yeah, yeah. Like, if it's so much information, then I don't even know where to start.
Right.
But the important thing is that you find what's the most important things and you learn them and you critically think about them so that you can apply it in your exams and in nursing school.
Yes.
So the trick is, what are the important parts? And I think we'll definitely dive into that. What are the important parts? Christina kind of alluded to that a little bit. Is number one.
Right.
The number one tip is probably whatever your teacher is talking about in class,
that's what you want to study.
That's what you want to study because they're teaching it to you in class for a reason. They think it's important. If your teacher thinks it's important, it's probably going to be important. So, yeah, focus on that kind of things. We'll probably dive into that a little bit more, but I don't know. Again, a little bit of tangent, but it's kind of like the Pareto principle of. It's the 80 20. So just study that 80 part. 80% part. And then. Yes. Are there going to be questions off of left field that you've never studied for. Yeah, but that's the 20%. And just don't sweat that.
And, you know, it's funny. Okay, I want to kind of put a pin in that. Remind me later because I need to talk about that more. We don't talk about that enough. A lot of students do get stuck in that where it's. It's like you do want to know everything about everything. But, you know, like, for example, etiology of things, like, knowing the causes of stuff. You might have one, maybe two questions on your exam on that, but really, you're not going to have many. And if you're spending so much of your time trying to learn the causes of, like the, like what causes, you know, or like the etiology of. Of disorders, I might not help you a ton on your exams just because they're not going to ask you a ton of questions about it. You know, they're not going to ask you. You know who. Like, like my microbiology class, I remember we had to learn about, like, Louis Pasteur, right. Who created the pasteurization system. You know, you don't have to know that stuff in nursing school. You don't have to know who created what all the things. They're not going to test you on that. That's memorization. You have to be able to critically think.
It could help you out during, like, trivia nights in, like, Applebee's. Right?
Trivia night. Applebee's. Is that still a thing?
So, like those kind of just like those random trivia questions or like, Trivial Pursuit? Yeah, if you bone up on that, then, yeah, definitely could help you at that game. But nursing school, probably not so much.
Not so much. No. Nope. Definitely not. Hey, can you guys comment and let me know who is in med surg right now? Are you in med surg? Because I would like to know who is in med surg if you're not in med surge. Where you at? Where you at? Where are you at in nursing school?
We already asked where you are at in the world.
Physically.
Physically. But yeah, where are you at in nursing school? And Melissa, that's a great question. What do you study if the instructor doesn't lecture in class? So we'll dive into that here in a little bit.
Yes, that's my next thing I'm going to talk about. It's my next class. Med surg, OBP. Okay, cool. Hey, O.B.
sarah, I'm doing med surg.
O.B. peds is really interesting because that is kind of like med surg is very, very similar because you will still be like, the studying process is very similar between med surg and then OB and pediatrics, because you're learning disorders either way, so that's kind of fun. So everything we talk about in this video today will help you apply, you know, will apply to OB and pediatrics.
Okay. Lots of people in med surge. Natalie, taking my med surg final on Friday. Awesome.
Congratulations.
So, Sarah, Minerva, Melissa. Yeah. Yep.
Awesome. Lily, just finishing up first year of your nursing program. Congratulations. Faith. Hello. I am starting out first week of a p. Woohoo. Exciting. Med surge one Respiratory system. Pharmacology. Med surge. Perfect. All right. Oh, Minerva, we love you too. Thank you. So let's go back to Melissa.
Yes.
What do you study if the instructor doesn't lecture in class? Now, this is a fantastic question. This hits a couple of things. What do you study if the instructor doesn't teach in class, doesn't lecture in class? And then what do you study really, even if they do.
Okay. And before you dive into that. So I just want to ask a question out there. Throwing it out into the ether. Melissa, if they're not lecturing in class, what are you guys doing in class? I'm just curious. Again, not a nurse, not a nursing student.
Yeah. Yeah. So if your instructors don't teach, what are you doing in class? Educate me. It's actually a great question. So we had that a couple of times with different instructors, and it was either, yeah, videos, like, prerecorded things, or it was group work that you would just do a project the whole time, which was weird. I didn't find that helpful because I don't really genuine. Generally find group work helpful. Like, group projects, I would imagine. Always kind of the worst.
I would imagine. If it's videos, though, right? It's still going over some topics.
It depends.
Well, or are you guys just watching like.
Like, we're not talking about the videos that we put up on YouTube. We're talking about videos that were recorded in, like, the 1970s with, like, the real. Or, like, you know, the 80s? I don't know. They're just like the really, like, the really old technology and all the stuff. It's just not very.
Did they. Did they, like, push in one of those really, really old TVs on one of those carts?
They got their Betamax.
Yeah. Their little VCR or whatever. Do they still do that?
Dislike group projects. Me too, Riley.
Me too, Melissa. Yes. Lots of group projects.
All right. I think that's the thing. Yeah. And just. I just don't find it really helpful.
Thank you. I, like I said, I'm educating me as well. So that's, that's good. Thank you, instructor. Prerecorded from years when they had hair of different colors.
And then you can't ask questions. And it's not interactive, you know, that's okay. So that's the thing that I also love about our Nursing ESSENCE membership community, because we don't just give you videos, but we have nursing tutors. So it's like you have a question and we are here for you. We help you through nursing school. So it's not like it's. Yeah, it's so great to be able to do it that way inside the community, because we don't just put out a video like I guess we do on YouTube, but, you know, inside our membership community, you know, you have the whole video database, but then also you have access to our nursing tutors. So you talk. You could talk with us all day, every day if you would like. That's what we're here for. I mean, I need to sleep a little bit, but other than the whole sleeping thing, I'm totally here for you.
Class is only one day a week. Oh, okay. All right.
Which also makes it tough because then you only have that one. That one opportunity, that one video, that 170s video, one 70s video. The one opportunity to get with your instructor and ask questions too. So.
All right.
Thank you.
So if you fall into those categories of doing group projects that don't help, apparently, or watching old videos in black and white, if you fall into that crowd. So. Yeah. What do you study?
Do you remember when we took the. Before our first baby. Do you remember when we took the birthing class and they had like the really old school videos? That's ridiculous. Anyway, that's. That's what you get in nursing school. You get the ridiculous old videos. I don't know. I don't find it helpful. Anyway, four things that you need to focus on if you're getting comment if
you find that useful. If you're like, yes, videos.
Yes.
There has to. There has to be someone out there. It's like, that's like listening to us right now. And they're like, what?
I don't get it.
I learned a lot. That's the best way that I learned how to study. So let us know if it is a universal thing that like.
Or if it's just a Christina thing
or if, if people actually do find those kind of studying technique, group projects. Let us know if you're one of those people. That's like. I love these group projects. This is. This is my jam.
This is the best thing ever.
Let us know. Let us. Let's find some unicorns out there, guys.
Yeah, I'm not a unicorn. All right, there's four things that you want to focus on when studying med surgeon, nursing school. Okay, you ready? Pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, nursing assessment, and nursing interventions. Four things. That's it. That's really. That is what your. Your exams are going to test you on. Pathophysiology, signs and symptoms of the disorder, nursing assessment for it and nursing interventions. What are you going to do about it? So that is the beefy part of your exam. Like we said, there's going to be tangential. Did I say that? Tangent. Gentle. How do you say that word?
Related topics.
Related topics. Like there's gonna be random questions that are the outliers. You know, you might get one question about some random something or other and that's okay. Let it go. But if you are spending. Here's the thing though. If you are spending all of your time trying to play that catch all game and read your entire text book, learn everything about everything, you're not just going to miss that one question. You are going to miss a ton of questions on that exam. Because you know, there are the beef. The bulk. Keep saying beef. The bulk of your exam is going to be over those four. Four main things. Patho, signs and symptoms, nursing assessment, and nursing interventions. Okay, so think back. So many of you guys are in med Surg. Like, almost all of you. Natalie, you take your med surg final on Friday. How you know, what are you studying right now? Think back through what your exams have been so far in Med Surge. I'm assuming you've taken some. Melissa, Minerva, you're in med surge too, right? Who on Instagram is in Med Surge? Riley.
I know.
Hi. Seesaw first year. Cherish. Yes. Brunetta. Hello. In Med Surg. So you guys think back to your med surg exams and think back on what the questions were saying, okay? And they are testing you on those four main things. Patho, signs and symptoms, nursing assessment, and nursing interventions. Okay, so the beautiful part about this is that you can connect everything back to the pathophysiology, right? So signs and symptoms, nursing assessment, and nursing interventions. You need to connect all of those back to the path of physiology. Once you know the patho, the patho means you know what is actually going on in the med surgery. Like what is actually going on inside the patient's body. Okay? Like, what is abnormal here? What is the pathophysiology? Once you know that, you can really be able to start critically thinking through the signs and symptoms, the nursing assessment and the nursing interventions. So signs and symptoms, you know, why are these things happening? Connect it back to the patho. Nursing assessment. Why do we do those nursing assessments? Okay. Connect it back to the patho. Nursing interventions. Why do we do these things? Connect it back to the patho. That is really the bulk of your exam right there. Those four main things. Does that make sense?
Okay, so to wrap it all back up and then kind of go back to the original question of what do I study when the teacher does not lecture in class, when we're just watching videos, when we're just doing group projects. So figure out what the disorders or what, what system you're currently working on and those disorders that you're working on. Really break it down and study those four things and most importantly, the patho. And then from there, critically think. Signs, symptoms, nursing assessment. Nursing interventions.
Yes. So you. You. Yeah, absolutely. You have to really take that leap, right? You have. Like we have been saying this whole time, you cannot just memorize stuff. It does not work. You cannot just spend all your time reading a textbook and trying to memorize all the things inside of it. You have to understand the patho and then connect it all back to the patho. Everything else, you know, the sciences, symptoms, nursing assessment, nursing interventions, like Matthew said, that is going to help you make that leap with critical thinking. Right? So we're not just memorizing. Okay? Now we are actually applying the information that we're learning. We're critically thinking about it and taking it to that next level. Thinking like a nurse. Right? That's what we do here. Yep. Too much memorization to remember. Yeah. Okay, so. And that's the problem. Okay, Right. Instagram Rocky. Hello. That's the problem. You. You cannot just. It's not helpful for you to memorize a list of signs and symptoms. It's not helpful for you to memorize a list of nursing assessments because they will always, always throw something at you that you didn't anticipate. So, like, static questions are a great example. Right. Who has had a Stata question, a Select all that Apply question on a nursing school exam? All of us. Right. Raise your hand. Oh, better yet, give me your favorite emoji. What's your favorite emoji? I love this game. What's your favorite emoji?
Emoji, everyone.
What's my favorite emoji? Let's see which one have I been loving lately?
I like the ninja, personally.
Is there a turtle emoji?
Oh, I'm sure there is.
Can somebody give me a turtle?
A turtle emoji?
Can you post a turtle down there, please? Because I think that might be my favorite one.
What is that?
Is that a lizard? Lily?
Is that Sobey? Yeah.
Do people still.
People still drink.
So tell me, is there a turtle emoji? There really should be if there's.
You saw an every exam. Yes, Minerva, definitely.
Thank you for my turtle. That's a nice turtle. Turtle. That is a nice green turtle. Thank you, Riley. That's so funny. I love it. Okay, that's my favorite.
Sarah. I knew the info, but I failed to answer the questions in the. The right way. Although I pass in kind of disappoint. Well, you pass, so, yes, you passed. There we go.
That's great. But, yeah, that will happen. You know, like I was saying, a couple weeks ago, there was a med surg exam that I took that I completely forgot to study, like, half the things that we were supposed to study. And I got to that exam, like, this did not go well because I literally forgot to study half the stuff. So, Sarah, that's really the. That's really the thing. That's really what we're talking about is being able to apply it to the questions, right? We're trying to make the leap from memorizing stuff to applying it. And that means. So, Sarah, that leap for you might be applying it to the questions themselves, right? Nirut. Is that a peacock?
That is a peacock.
That's great.
The weirdest thing is YouTube held it for me to review. I don't know why.
I don't.
I don't know what YouTube finds offensive about a peacock, but I said show
it because it's a peacock.
Come on, guys.
That's awesome. That's really funny.
Yeah.
Well, I love the turtle. Okay? Peacock is cool. The peacock is actually pretty nice. I do like the turtle.
The turtle's a fun one.
The turtle is a fun one. Yeah. So, Sarah, I think that might be for a lot of us, you know, that really is. What do you call that? The barrier. That really is the. The sticking point sometimes is, you know, the information. Okay, I know that. I know it. But now how do I prove? How do I prove, silly little computer that. I know it.
Don't worry, guys. I got this. Yeah, trust me, I got this. Don't worry about what I answered. I. I know it.
It's. I mean, it's so true. It's so true. Because you know that you know it. You know, you just. You just have to prove to the computer that you know it. Is that a cat in the box? There's an emoji of a cat in a box.
That's funny.
That is. That might overtake the turtle. Just being honest.
So, Rocky, Rocky, you're talking a lot about meds, so. Yeah, medications and memorization of medications.
Oh, okay, I missed that. Sorry.
So that's what you're talking about. Yes, there. There are a lot of medications.
A lot of medications. Yeah. Oh, we have a great video on YouTube. Rocky, you're on Instagram. So if you go over to our YouTube channel, YouTube.com nursingsos, move over to that computer, move over to YouTube and then just search on our channel. Just search Pharmacology. We have a fantastic pharmacology video. I think it's called My number one pharmacology Hack. Isn't that what it is? Maybe my number one pharmacology hack. Check it out because it's awesome. I also have a whole video on med cards and how to make med car cards. It's really going to help you. So check it out. That'll really, really help.
Yes.
Oh, hello. Like my search too. A. That's so fun. When babies like.
All right, someone pop in the ninja emoji. Let's see.
Oh, where's Matthew's ninja emoji?
I need a ninja emoji.
Nicole, I love your farm. Oh, I'm glad it's helpful. Fantastic. See, Rocky Nicole says that those YouTube videos were helpful, so check it out on YouTube. Yes. Oh, also inside the nursing SS membership community, we have a whole medication database. There's like over 120 medications that we have videos on.
There are a lot of them.
We literally walk you through step by step, everything you need to know for your meds in nursing school. And while we're on the topic, Med Surg 2, you know, that's what we do here. So inside the membership community, we have step by step videos for all the med surge disorders that you have to know in nursing school. And we literally walk you through everything you have to know, and we give you the key critical thinking points that you have to know. So when I say connect everything back to the pathophysiology. Yes, you have to do it. But also inside the nursing SOS membership community, we do it for you.
So help you with that.
We help you with that.
So it's really. It is exercising your critical thinking and kind of showing you how it works.
And we walk you through it.
Yes, that will definitely help you later on.
We walk you through why these signs and symptoms are connected to the pathophysiology. Why do these things happen? Why do we do these nursing assessments? Why do we do the nursing interventions like we do? It is so helpful. Cholinergic drugs and autonomic. Autonomic nervous system. On Monday. Neroot. Yes, Go into the community. Log into your dashboard. Your dashboard's brand new, by the way.
Oh, yes, we'll circle back around on that.
Yes. We had a major update to the nursing ESSENCE membership community this afternoon and it is now just so amazing. So super excited for that. There is an app now, Natalie. Yeah. You go to the email that I sent you earlier and click that link and log in. And there is an app, actually, Marilyn made a video for how to download the app. So it's all in there.
It is an iOS app right now.
Yes.
But. Yeah.
So Lady B, where do I sign up? So it's actually. Enrollment is closed right now, so if you go to nursing schoolofsuccess.com forward/join, you can get on the wait list. Well, it's not a wait list. Just kidding. The VIP list, we rebranded it. It's not really a wait list. It was never really a wait list. It's just. It's just a list that, where I. That I have of. You know, if you want to sign up for this list, I will just email you right. When enrollment opens and then you will know and you will be able to join when it opens. That's all it is. So it's a. It's a VIP list. That sounds fancy, right?
And by the way, Nicole said, I love your farm. Rocky, over in Instagram talking to Nicole on YouTube. Rocky says, Thanks a lot.
Yeah, just. Just letting you know, Nicole. Letting you know, Nicole, that Rocky appreciated your comment. That's funny.
But then also, Rocky, you're saying that on cardiac, the signs and symptoms are a lot. Yes, for a lot of the disorders. Signs and symptoms. There are a lot of. And so that's what we're. Exactly what we're talking about. If you're just going to try and memorize every single sign and symptom for every single disorder, that's way too much memorization just to memorize and regurgitate. So that's why we're trying to make that leap into critical thinking. Okay. What's the pathophysiology of this cardiac disorder? And then based on the. On that pathophysiology, now you can kind of Deduce. Deduce what? The signs and symptoms are based on what's happening, what's going on, what's wrong with the body with that cardiac disorder.
Wow. Good job.
I know, right? Did I do it? Yes.
Nada.
Nice.
Good job. Hey, look at the smiles we're getting from over here.
I know. He's been smiling all this time.
He's so cute.
Lady B. How do I get on our email list?
Oh, so go to. Where did she go? Nursingschool.com and find a button somewhere on there that says, sign up for cheat sheet. Sheet. Yeah, that's funny. Oh, yes. Near root. Yes, you can still DM me. That's totally fine. I have the PDF. Just. Just DM me and I will send it to you.
Yeah, let's see. Alex, Hi. From London, England. That's quite a ways away. All right.
London is cool.
Yes, for sure.
Okay. Trying to pull through. Good.
Okay.
Okay.
So, yeah, so really, that's it, though. Really trained in. Say something, say something.
Really trying to say something.
Really trying to impress that. That importance of really taking the leap from memorization to critical thinking. And, yes, it takes a lot. It takes a lot of work. It takes a lot of practice to do that, but really, that will help you go a long ways.
I was gonna talk about concept maps, but, you guys, I think. I think I want to wait on that. I think I want to talk about the critical thinking. Would that be okay? Raise your hand. What would be more helpful, concept maps or critical thinking right now? Which one do you want me to go over? Because I don't think I have time for both because the baby's gonna start fussing.
And while you're. Well, well.
Concept maps or critical thinking? What do you want me to go over right now?
Quick, vote, vote, vote. And while you're voting. Still. I'm still not sure if this tastes like space, but. Anyone else? Starlight. Coca Cola. Starlight. I'm trying to find someone. Someone that has critical.
Oh, everyone's saying critical thinking. Okay, okay, okay. Calm down. Just kidding. Okay, good. Yeah. Critical thinking. Okay, awesome. Critical thinking it is. So we will go through. That's funny. I think everyone was just typing at the same time, and then all of a sudden, we got, like, a ton
Delay isn't too long.
No, the delay is not very long. That's really nice. We were worried that the delay would be too much. Okay, critical thinking or concept maps. Tell me in the chat, which one do you want? Instagram. Critical thinking is winning by landslide. Not getting a ton of comments On Instagram. Instagram. Where are you at? Critical thinking or concept maps? Tell me right now. Okay, but YouTube, you're winning for critical thinking. Okay, so this is the. Let me hold it up. YouTube. Can you see this? Hopefully. Yeah, it might be a little blurry. Instagram can definitely see this. So this is our DRC Critical thinking model. Okay. This is a lovely thing that I created to help you critically think in nursing school. So you could just follow this. D stands for description or definition. So write out the description or definition, high level, of whatever you are learning about in nursing school. Okay? Then the R is reason or rationale. Reason or rationale? Why does it happen? So here, I really want you to dig deep and think about the pathophysiology. So the D is just definition or description. We're thinking high level here. Keep it high level for the D. Definition and description. What is this thing that's going on? The R is the pathophysiology. Now we get into the. What is happening in the body? How is this happening? Think deep. Pathophysiology. C stands for connection. Okay. Now this is where you're going to connect it to everything else that you're learning. So, you know, whatever topic this is, you talked about the patho or whatever's going on, that deep dive there, connect it to other disorders that you're learning about. Connect it to medications that you might have to give. Connect it to, you know what, What's. Well, right here, this is an example of diabetes. But assessment and interventions. So what are the assessments that you're going to do? What are the interventions that you're going to do? You have to connect the dots to everything else that you're learning. So remember this drc. Okay, Description, definition, reason, or rationale, then connection. Okay, does that make sense? YouTube. I hope you can kind of see that. Hopefully you can see that a little. Maybe I hold it up. Oh, there you go. There you go. YouTube. That's a lot better. Maybe it's backwards. Hopefully it's not backwards. It's not backwards. Okay, good. There you go. So like, Screenshot. Okay, Instagram. You're ready to screenshot. Screenshot that. Instagram. Okay. Screenshot.
That way you can see. Oh, good.
Yep, yep, yep. Screenshot. Rocky said, I don't want this to end. Screenshot this. Instagram. Did everyone. Okay, comment, comment. When you get your screenshot, comment. Tell me, tell me. I don't know how much of a delay there is. Okay, screenshot it, though. Screenshot it, please. Okay, YouTube. I'll come back to you Instagram. Screenshot this on YouTube if you can. Okay, screenshot that. I don't know, screenshot it and then share it to your stories and then tag me in it.
So yes, that is.
That is screenshot it.
Our critical thinking model. Model.
Screenshot it and share it to your. Sorry, YouTube. It's not. Why can't I get it to not be blurry? Oh, there you go. Okay, Screenshot it on YouTube. YouTube. Oh, no. Okay. Oh, YouTube. Did you get your screenshot? Because it keeps going blurry on me. Did you get it? Somebody comment. Tell me you got it. Okay, got it. Instagram.
It's backwards.
YouTube. Instagram. I'm sorry, Riley, I didn't realize it's backwards. Ah, bummer. What do I do? Can I flip it this way? That doesn't help.
No, that really doesn't.
I'm just kidding.
How. How would. If you do this, can you see it that way? No.
Okay, sorry. Can you flip the phone? Is there any way that I can reverse this on. Okay, bummer. Sorry. Okay, what else? Okay, here's what I'm gonna do. Riley's laughing at me. Can you please someone remind me of this if I forget? I'm gonna take a picture of this for my stories and I will post it on my Instagram stories.
Someone DM me.
Let's do it that way. Someone DM me and remind me to do that. Because usually after these lives I eat ice cream, to be honest with you. And I might get distracted by my ice cream.
So blank. Like my mind.
Oh, awesome.
Learning is fun.
Riley is on fire tonight. I love this Joshua.
They can always edit the pic and flip it. Thanks.
I don't know how to do that, to be honest, Joshua or. That's why I have a husband.
Actually, I have a pro tip. All our lives are on YouTube. So Instagram peeps. You can also just head on over to our YouTube. Subscribe. Hit the bell if you haven't yet. Same with you guys watching on YouTube right now.
Subscribe. Hit the bell.
Yeah, take it. Take a little second. Subscribe and hit the bell.
This is the game we play here our late night.
You can switch lives Instagram. You can go over to YouTube and find this video and screenshot it there, I guess.
But seriously though, I think it would be helpful for people on Instagram. So someone DM me on Instagram and remind me if I forget forget to post this on my stories. I will hope. I will hope. I will try to remember to post this on my stories.
I guess people on YouTube, you can also follow us on Instagram Nursing SOS.
Yes.
So that you can. You can get that.
Yeah, I do some shenanigans on Instagram, that's for sure. I have been a little quieter on Instagram the past couple weeks because we, Our family has been going through it. Let me just tell you, we were so, so sick the past two weeks. And here's the problem that I didn't realize you would have with a big family. Like, I think we now have entered into the big family category after having yet another child. So it takes a while for sickness to get through our family.
It starts eventually. We'll just kind of circle around and
we'll just always be sick. So it starts with one. Because, like, it. When it was just us and maybe one child. Child, you know, it would. It would go through our family of three in maybe five or seven days. But now it's like, okay, one child gets sick a few days later. Another child gets sick a few days later. Well, I got sick second, and then our second child got sick after that. You actually never got sick. But now the baby dodged the bullet so far. It takes a while to get it through. So, you know, I'm hoping to come back on Instagram stories.
Let's see.
More than I am right now.
Joshua. Again, I'm. I'm just gonna be the translator here from Instagram comments to YouTube comments, because Joshua Riley has some words for you. She says, I'm in nursing school, not a computer tech.
Yeah, I. I have said that before. I'm a nurse, not a computer genius.
I don't know.
That's why I married this guy who is a computer genius. Win, win. I love that. Are you being fussy or are you just talking? Are you just talking? Oh, yeah. Okay. He has a lot of thoughts.
Yes.
About med surge. Oh, that's funny. Okay, Rocky, you asked, when do we go live? We go live Monday and Wednesdays at the same time. So 7:00pm Pacific, 10:00pm Eastern. And this is what we do.
Yes, this is what we do. And Narut, sorry that we did not go through the concept map. I'm sure we're going to do that in a future.
That's what I wanted to mention. Is it probably Monday?
Monday.
Monday on the live. Who wants to do concept maps Monday? Raise your hand.
That sounds alliterative.
Send up a turtle emoji.
Concept map Monday.
Concept map Monday. Who is. Who would like to do that content map Mondays? Because we can totally go over how to do concept maps on Monday. Riley. Goodbye. Thank you for Being so awesome. Have fun studying.
Yeah, that goes with everyone. Have fun studying.
Have fun studying. Thank you. Neeruch for the turtle emoji. Okay, concept maps. It is YouTube and instagree. Instagree.
Instagree.
This is why. This is why we do what we do. It is late for us. This is the game that we play. Matthew and Christina getting a live video. Trying not to say ridiculous things this late at night. Okay, Monday, concept maps. We'll see you there and then at 7pm Pacific.
