MAR 22 LIVE SHOW | The Nursing School Show | ASK US ANYTHING!

Christina Rafano and Matthew answer nursing students' questions about why studying hard doesn't guarantee high exam scores. They explain that the Next-Gen NCLEX requires critical thinking over memorization, test anxiety derails performance, and aiming for a B instead of an A is realistic. Study two hours independently for every classroom hour.

We go boom. It's not gonna be just me today. I promise you. Matthew will be here. We had a little bit of a stinky pants emergency with the baby, so he's handling that. How are y' all doing today? Are we excited on this Wednesday? How's it going? We got six inches of snow yesterday. Needless to say, I am not impressed. I am ready for spring. I am ready for sunshine, and I am so done with the cold. Our little seedlings are. They're inside still, and I would very much like to take them outside because we are running out of space. Good morning, everyone. Hi. Hi. Eccentric. Good morning. Yes, we talked about the next gen, nclex. Okay, here's what I want you to do. Go on to our YouTube channel because you're asking this question on Instagram. Go to our YouTube channel and type in NCLEX. All right, so we're at nursing SOS on YouTube. Type in NCLEX. We have a fabulous breakdown of the NGN from August. You're looking for the August one. Okay. Because we did a real deep dive on what the NGN is. What's changing, why you shouldn't freak out about it. Right? That is all the important questions. Good morning. Where are you guys from today? Where are we tuning in from? I got some messages this morning from New York. Super fun. It's not getting snow in New York is what I heard. Hello. Hello. Good morning. So I have a couple questions we're going to go over today that were submitted last week. So the first question I want to talk about is, I study every day, and I know the info, but I'm still not getting the exam grades that I want. What can I do? And this is a fabulous question. Like, what do you do if you are not getting the grades that you want? Like, you're studying so hard, but you are. Like, it just doesn't seem like enough. Hello, New Jersey. Hello, Australia. Fabulous. Trinidad, New York. Hello. Good morning, friends. Yeah. Is this like spring break for you, too? Because I know this is spring break for some people. Are you in class this week or are you lots of people from New York?
I'm coming.
I'm coming. Hello, everyone. Good morning.
Good morning.
I told them you had a baby stinky pants emergency.
I did, yes. A baby stinky, not my own.
Well, emergency.
All right. How is everyone doing this morning? What are we talking about?
I told them the first question we have to come cover is when you're studying as much as you can, but you're still not getting the grades that you want yes. Eccentric. Said hello to you.
Okay.
Hello. Yes. Okay. Okay. This is Matthew, by the way. If you don't know who Matthew is.
I am Matthew.
I am Christina. If you don't know who I am, good morning. Because we never introduce ourselves. We just assume that everyone knows who we are. If you're, like, on Instagram, I just. And YouTube, we just fixed. You're like.
You've already watched the videos. Well, welcome for joining us.
I'm sorry.
Yes.
Yep.
All right.
We are here on this Wednesday, and I already complained about the snow, so I think we're ready to go.
Okay, we're ready to go.
All right, here we are, friends.
Let's see. These are questions from previous lives that we were not able to get to. So we're getting to them now. If you have a question about nursing school, pop them in the comments below.
Below.
And we will talk about them as well. So please do that. But, yeah, this first topic that we want to talk about, I study every day and I know the info, but I'm still not getting the exam grades that I want. What can I do? And I think that there's a lot in this question. There's a lot of levels. So I'm not sure what you wanted to talk about first or if you had an idea of what to talk about first.
The first thing that comes to my mind is that if you are. If you feel like you know the content, but you're still not passing the exams or still not getting the exam grades that you want. Well, okay, first, I guess we should talk about, like, what is the exam grade that you want and how far are you missing that? Because here's the thing, you guys, like, straight A's is not the goal. I know everyone's like, ah, straight A's. Yay. That's definitely what you should be doing in nursing school. No, you just have to pass, my friend. You are in nursing school already.
You.
Yes, you probably needed straight A's in your prereqs in order to get accepted into nursing school. But now you are in nursing school. Let's relax a little bit. You're totally fine. Okay.
Okay. So, cj, your. Your question will dovetail into this in a little bit. So stick around. How many hours should a student nurse study a day?
That is a fabulous question.
We're going to add that to this list and we're going to get to it because that's part of this question as well. So, yeah, the first thing that Christina mentioned is, yeah, it kind of goes into this. I'm still not getting the exam grades that I want. So the first question is, what are the exam grades that you want? So you have to have that idea in mind of what your. What your exam grades that you want to be will be. Because if you're. Everyone's different. I mean, I guess some people could make it their goal to. To do straight A's. That's fine. Some other may have other goals. And our goal for you is to be able to study as efficiently as possible, get the grades that you want, and still have time left over to do other things that you want. Because if you're going to. If you're going to set the goal for straight A's, you can certainly set the goal for straight A's. But know that something will have to give in other places. If you're willing to give those, then sure, if your, if your goal is those A's. And fine, if. If your other parts of your life are things that you don't want to give up, then you'll just need to balance everything out. And when it all balances out, maybe the goal shouldn't be straight A's. Maybe the goal should be straight Cs, right?
Bs. I don't know if you can pass with Cs.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, I'm not sure. Very rarely in nursing school can you pass with Cs.
I don't know if Bs.
Bs would be the goal.
Okay? So, yeah, so make sure that you know what you need to pass and hit that or set that as your goal.
So yeah, because you don't want to have to study 100% all the time. Like, you should not be studying 24.
7 in nursing school.
Okay. Not helpful for you. So that's why CJ's question is so good. How many hours do you study? But that really is the first question you need to ask is, what am I? What is my actual goal Here is my goal, straight A's. It shouldn't be friend unless you, like, really, really want it to be. But if your goal is straight A's, like, you're probably giving up a lot in your life. You don't have to give up. That's a lot of, like, stress on yourself, right? Really? The goal is to pass and become an amazing nurse. Okay? So just release that pressure off of you. Relax. You're gonna be totally fine. Okay? B minus. That's what we're going for, B minus. So the next part of that question, you're if you feel like you know the Content, but you're still not getting the exam grades that you want. Really, what I see when I look at that question is that you are having a hard time making a leap from memorization to critical thinking. You are having a hard time applying the content to an exam question. So, so common. So it's very common to actually know the content, but when you get to the exam, you can't like apply it to a patient's situation or a case scenario question or whatever they throw at you. Right. It's like you know the content, you just don't know how to answer the specific test question about that content. Does that make sense? Does this happen to you guys all the time? Happen to me all the time. So you have to figure out how to apply it. Right. How to critically think. So that's why we talk constantly about critical thinking. So here's what I want you guys to do. On Instagram, the link is in my bio to a critical thinking cheat sheet. Matthew, you could put it in the chat on YouTube.
On YouTube you said yes. So if that's something that resonates with you. Yeah, it's making that leap from knowing the content to critically thinking about it in scenario, which is what your tests are Most likely about 100%.
So critical thinking is everything, you guys. So check out this critical thinking teacher that we have for you. Nursingschoolofsuccess.com forward/critical thinking. The link is in my bio on Instagram. You just check out critical thinking cheat sheet and it will be there. And then Matthew, just put the link in the comments on YouTube. So that is what you want, you want to get those in that cheat sheet. I'll walk you through what critical thinking is, how to do it. Nine key critical thinking questions to like walk through in your mind as you're studying so that you are able to apply the information.
And that's a big part of what we do in the, in the membership community too, is getting you ready to make that leap from memorization to taking those concepts and critically thinking and applying them. Because again, back to the first point. Your goal is to become an amazing nurse.
And you.
And they're not going to have every single thing, every single scenario that you could encounter as a nurse in your textbook or on tests and whatnot. So really, to become an amazing nurse, you have to be able to take that information. And when a patient comes in with their totally unique experience, you should be able to clearly think and take the knowledge that you know and apply it to that specific patient.
Yes. And that's exactly what. Well, someone asked about the NGN earlier. That's exactly what the NGN is going to test you on this next gen nclex. They are trying to get it to be more realistic to patient situation. So you are going to actually be able to click through a patient's chart to get all the information you need to answer the test question. It's pretty crazy. Like, it's actually like you look at a patient's chart and then you are, you know, applying that information, like looking at that information and applying it to that test question. So it's actually pretty cool. Like you have. They give you a lot of information to click through because it's like an emr, right?
So this is an interesting question that kind of dovetails into it. How do we answer questions about medications that we've never heard of or disease that we've never encountered?
Yeah, that's so funny. I really like that question simply because so often. Here's what will happen, friends. We talk about this in the membership community. There's a lot of ways that nursing instructors or the NCLEX will trick you. Like they're not trying to trick you, but they are kind of trying to trick you.
Okay.
So if you are looking at answers, like an answer list for a question and there's a medication on there that you just don't know, you've never heard of before, there's a disorder on there you've never heard of before, it is rarely the correct answer. They're trying to trick you.
It's a good test tip right there.
It's a very good test tip. So it's funny, like, yeah, okay, they could, like, is there, are there situations where you've just never heard of it before? Sure, of course. But so often they will throw things at you. It's like the most random medication, but it's not the right answer. You've never heard of it before. So we talked about this a little bit on Monday. I think this is really important. Like, yes, they are they. Someone actually who was that? They just said safety. I saw that come through. Yeah. Eccentric. Hello. So just like we talked about on Monday, the NGN and your nursing exams, they're testing you on two things. Your competency and safe care. They want to make sure that you are competent and you can provide safe care.
Right.
So those are the two things, competency and safety. Eccentric. You're exactly, exactly right. So when you are looking at your exams, they're not very often going to test you on a medication. You have never heard of before or have never seen, or that is something that you're never ever going to give. It's not very common. That's why they put them in the answers. Like they'll take a random medication from the drug guide, one that you've never ever like heard of ever in the world. And it's just trying to trick you. So if there's a medication on there that you literally like, I have no idea. This could be a made up word, my friend. It could be like not even a real thing. So just keep that in the back of your mind. If there really is something on your exam that's like in the, in the, in the answers that you've never heard of before, some disorder or some medication, it might not be the right answer because they're trying to test your competency and safety, which means that like you. And that's the thing too. Like, you know, like you've at least heard the names of the medications, right? Like at clinical, you've read them in your pharmacology textbook. You've heard the names in class, so you have at least heard the names. You might not know everything about that medication, but you have at least heard the names. All right, the next thing I want to say about this is that you do need to know the generic name and they can get you with this one. If you're just focused on the trade names for your medications, that's not going to help you, my friends. So there's two different kinds. So these are our pharmacology flashcards from our farm box. And you have to know the generic name. Lidocate. Okay. You have to know the generic name, not the trade names. When you are taking a nursing school exam, taking the nclex, they're always going to use the generic name, the generic name. There's only one generic name for every medication. There's only one. Okay, but then there's trade names that go, they're like brands, you know, like Tylenol. Tylenol is a trade name. Everyone calls it Tylenol, but it's actually acetaminophen. That's the generic name. There's only one for acetaminophen. So the NCLEX and your nursing school exams are always going to use the generic name. At least they might include the trade names, but they will always include the generic name. And so that is another way that they could kind of get you on your test is that if you are focused on those trait names you really like, watch yourself, okay? Make sure that you Know the generic names. So that's like, you know, on our farm flashcards, it's the big one. There's only one generic name.
Awesome. A bloom. Hello. Yes, my name is Matt. Matthew. I go by Matthew, but my brother in law, the brother is Matt.
So yes, my brother's name is Matt and so he's Matthew. Just not the confusion.
That's what's happening.
All right, Nice to see you, my friend.
Yeah. So backing up really the, the idea. I know the info, but I'm still not getting the great exam grades that I want. Yeah. So that knowing info but not being able to translate it over to the test. Christina mentioned that really one of the key things that we notice is that you're memorizing or you just know the information but making that you're having a hard time making that leap to critically thinking about it, about a specific scenario that a test is asking. So yeah, that's really important is don't just memorize things. To memorize things. Focus. Focus on critical thinking. Focus on understanding the concepts and how they apply to patients so that you can take the concepts and apply them to any sort of scenario that you have.
Yes.
Now I did want to jam on something else related to that or maybe not related, but related to the question. I know the info, but I'm still not getting the exam grades because I was thinking in my mind that there's another reason that that could happen and this could happen. Like if you're not in a test environment and you just ask that scenario and you're able to answer it right away and that's really talking to, towards the stress and anxiety that you might associate with test taking. So does this happen with you that you feel like you know the information, you know how to apply it, you know how to critically think about it. But as soon as you get in a test environment, all that information just.
Goes out your head like blank.
So I think that that's another big reason that that could be that I know, I know the information, I know that I know how to apply it, but I just have a fear of test or whenever I just get in this test taking environment. I don't take tests well. I hear this a lot. Right.
Yeah. So I'm not a good test, I'm.
Not a good test taker. Test anxiety. Yes, exactly. So does this happen to you? Does so is the, this part, the first part, not being able to critically think or, or is it this reason to test anxiety? So let us know if you have that as well. And what can we do about that.
It's so common and I think. So, like, when you were saying it's just like, test anxiety or I'm just not good at taking tests. Like, these are like buzz phrases. Yes, right. Everyone says, oh, I have test anxiety. I have test anxiety. It's like, what does that mean? Okay, so oftentimes, if we're. If you're so stressed about taking an exam, then you're. It's like your mind just can't comprehend what's happening. Like, your mind cannot process the information on the exam because you are just too like. Oh, like. What's the word? Like tightened up or like you're. You freeze.
Yeah, right.
It's like.
Yeah, it's a fighter. Fight, flight, freeze, freeze. And the other one.
Yeah, because they just added the other one. Someone told us in a live before, but now I forget what it was. What's the fourth? It's fight, flight, freeze. And now they just added a fourth. Someone tell me in the comments what it is. Someone Google it. What is the.
We went through this on another live.
We did, like, a few weeks ago.
So.
Yeah, that's funny. I just saw a heart go up on YouTube. How did you make a heart go up on YouTube? Oh, what just happened? Did YouTube add, like, a heart button?
Is it fear? I don't remember. I don't think it's fear. But yeah, it's how you. How you deal with that kind of anxiety or.
Yeah, like your fight or flight response.
Response. Like how I grew up.
What's your, like, sympathetic nervous system doing? Is basically what it is.
I forget.
Yeah. So when you're like, test anxiety that, like, test. Everyone says I have test anxiety. Really, what happens in that situation is that. Yeah, you are so far in, like, this, like, fight or flight mode, like we were just talking about, and your mind just goes, like, totally blank. Like, you can't even process the information. Like, you can't even process the test questions. And so, you know, if that's really it, like, you have to get in a, like, proper zone in your mind to take that exam. And I think a lot of it just comes with practice and confidence. Oftentimes, like, when you have anxiety about something, it's just, like, you don't feel confident in it. So I've coached students on this before. So often it's just. It's all. It's nursing school, you guys, is not about the content. So often, like, you can learn the content. Anybody can teach you the content. It's. It's a mind game, man. It is like such a mental game. Do you notice this? Like, so much of the. Like, so much of what you have to overcome in nursing school is not fun. That's what it is. Yes, you are absolutely right. Fun. Now, can you tell me what does that mean exactly? It's fight, flight, fight, freeze or fog.
It's the Nightingale.
You are so right.
Effect or right, not Nightingale, but the syndrome where you. You kind of go towards it.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Stockholm syndrome. Yeah, Nightingale.
Sorry, nurses.
That's funny. Sorry, nurses. Yes. Stockholm syndrome. Is that what it is? Like the fawn, where you just kind of like recede back and. And are like. Okay, I'm like, you get really. Compliant. That's a good word. Like, you get really compliant. So good. Thank you for that. Those are the four. Fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. That's. Yes. Okay, now we know. Thank you. I'll try to remember that. So. Yes, it's just like you have, I think, so often it's like a confidence thing. So you guys gotta get inside the nursing office membership community. Let me coach you on this. If you are struggling with test anxiety, if you are not getting the grades that want, there is a reason for it. Okay, so we have coaching calls inside our community. I would like to coach you on this because it's a very. It's very personalized to each student. Your experience is going to be very different than someone else's experience. Although we can speak to kind of the broader categories. It is so much more effective if you come on video with me and I can coach you through it individually. That's what we do outside.
Yeah. So that's another big part of the membership community is what we talk about is really getting your mindset right. Focus on the things that you're supposed to be focused on. Ignore the things you're supposed to ignore. And along with that, the kind of bigger question is really getting your mindset right, making sure you're thinking about things the right way. And yeah, in order to help that, help with that, our members are offered coaching sessions or Christina gets on coaching calls, we call them, and basically you get on and talk about it. Because, yes, everyone is individualized and we need to critically think about it and apply that knowledge to a specific scenario, that being your anxiety and whatever is causing it. So it does take a little bit more. But yeah, it's. It's something that is worth diving into so that you're in the right mindset when taking tests so that you don't freeze that you can't or Fun or fight.
Fight or flight.
That you just take your test.
You just take your test and you take it well.
Yes.
Yes. That's so funny. Okay, how many hours should a student study a day? So. So there's YouTube hearts going up.
I did not see it. I'm not seeing.
How did that happen?
I did not see it. I think you're seeing things.
I am not seeing things.
People on YouTube just keep doing it. So I see it because I. I have not seen.
Yeah, yeah. Keep hitting that heart button so Matthew can see it. So here's what I always recommend. Sorry, do you have something?
No, just, just the last part of the first question is I study every day. And so the follow up question is how many hours should a student study a day? Which is what we'll go through. And you might be studying. Not enough. You might be studying too much. So we'll find out.
Oftentimes it is a too much thing. And that's where that mindset stuff comes into play. Play is that you, you get really nervous or stressed or anxious about something and then you do.
I did see. I saw one. Hundreds.
What was that? How are you guys doing that on YouTube and they're hard.
Wait, wait, what's going on? People on YouTube. Are you on.
How are you doing the heart? How are you doing? This is a new. That's so funny. Thank you, YouTube.
That's cool.
That is so funny.
What's going on? Oh, also Bloom, I think that that's a real, real thing too, what you mentioned. And we do have to remember that there are other forces at work.
There's spiritual battle, there's happy faces. This is great. YouTube. You're fantastic. That is so funny. So you guys, when you are studying in nursing school, here's the benchmark that you want to remember about how many hours to study per week. Okay? So for every hour you are in class, you need to be studying for two hours outside of class per week for every hour that you're in class. So let's say you have a three hour pharmacology class in a week. So let's say you have a farm class on Tuesdays and it's three hours. Then you would study for two hours for every hour you're in that pharmacology class. So you would study for six hours per week outside of class for that farm class. Does that make sense? Let's say you have a four hour med surg class on Thursdays. Then you would study for eight hours outside of class for that med surg class.
Every week.
That makes sense. So for every hour that you are in class, your benchmark is to study for two hours outside of class. Class for every hour you're in class. Good morning from Canada. Hello Canada. So that gives you a good benchmark to try to. At least it can give you a, a starting point. Okay. At minimum two hours per one hour. Yes. That's perfect. It'll give you a benchmark. You don't want to be studying, overstudying, you don't want to be understudying. So that is a very good benchmark to, to start with. Okay. And see how that goes for you. Like we always say, if you've got a research paper or like a dozen care plans, do that's going to be, you know, that is really going to take more time. But overall when you're just like studying for a class K two hours outside of class for every hour you are in class. Yep. Yes. Yes, yes.
I think that's the main thing is that at least that gives you a good starting point.
Yes.
Um, and again, everyone is different. Everyone has their own scenarios going through. So yeah, just take that with, take that advice with, with whatever you're going.
Through as well and apply it to you.
Yeah, apply it to you.
Oh, this is what I wanted to say. We talked a lot about test taking strategies here a little bit earlier. We also mentioned a couple on Monday. But do we have a timeline for when our super secret project is going to be released to the members?
Oh, to the members.
Yeah, because there's going to the members first.
Yes.
When is it going to be released to the members? Like our current super secret project.
Yeah, I think that that's.
We have a lot of super secret projects.
Super secret projects. Yeah. Probably by this launch or at the end of this launch. Right?
Like next week.
Yeah, yeah. Because it's.
Yeah. Okay. So next week friends nursing SS members. So here's what I want you to remember. Okay. We have some super fabulous resource coming for our nursing assessment members next week. So like Matthew, just that should be done by next week. And that is really going to help you with test taking. It's really going to help you with thinking. It's really going to help you with passing med surge and fundamentals. Like it's amazing. So stay tuned for that. I'm so stoked to announce it. Next week apparently. I think so. I think we can do it. We can get it done. Matthew and I have our work cut out for us and it's gonna be awesome. So enrollment opens on Sunday you guys, for the membership community. It only opens a couple times a year, so make sure that you join this Sunday. This will be the last enrollment that we have before we start releasing a ton of new stuff. Like I said on Monday, like we have like 3, 000 things coming for our members over the next like several weeks and several months. And this, what Matthew and I were just talking about is going to be the first one to come. So, so stoked for this. We're gonna like, it's gonna change the game for you in our school. And a couple weeks like a month ago, we just added tutoring and inside our community so you can actually get personalized tutoring with. Currently it's Nicole, our lead nurse on our team. She has tutor hours, tutor calls on Mondays and Thursdays inside our community. So if you have questions before you take an exam, if you have, you know, whatever you have, do you have questions about in nursing school, we're here for it. So jump on a tutoring call inside our community community. We can help you out. I was talking about this on our Monday night call. Insider Community. There's a very big difference between understanding nursing content and being able to teach nursing content. And so often what we see is nursing programs hire really great nurses. That's very different than hiring nurses who are really great nurses but also know how to teach. And I can tell you, like, hands down, we know how to teach nursing. We know how to teach nursing content. Like, we have our step by step processes. We have like, we can teach you step by step how these disorders work, what you need to know about them, how to write a care plan, how to answer a dose count question and get it right every single time. We know how to teach you so that you understand it the first time. And that is very different than watching, you know, sitting in a lecture class where they're just giving you content. It's very different. So when you are inside the community, like we literally break everything down for you step by step so you can actually understand it and critically think about it. It's a huge difference. Cj, you're wondering, is tutoring included in the membership? Yes, it is. So it is fabulous. And there's actually two ways you could get tutoring. So we have our tutor calls where you can jump on a call with our nursing team with Ms. Nicole. Call her Ms. Nicole to our children with our lead nurse Nicole on Monday. So those calls right now are on Mondays and Thursdays. You can jump on a call or. This is so cool. We have an on demand Tutor form. So you can submit questions to us anytime. All right. And then we'll get back to you and answer those questions through our tutor form. So it's an on demand tutor form. It's accessible 24 7. You submit a question and we will get back to you. It's fabulous. So you never, like, I know there's a lot of things out there. Like, there's a lot of. You could take a lot of courses. You can watch a bunch of YouTube videos and you can read all your textbooks and do all the things, like buy a bunch of study guides on Etsy. You could do all those things. But the problem is you still have to figure it out yourself. Like, you still have to teach it to yourself. Even if you bought a study guide. Like, you still have to teach yourself the content. That's not what we do inside our community. Sure, you can watch a video inside our community because we have hundreds of step by step nursing lectures, but we also teach it to you. Like we walk with you through all of it. So if you have questions, if you don't understand something, that's what we're here for. Like, we are totally here for it. Questions about care plans, questions about those cal. Questions about all the things. That's what we do.
Yeah. So we have the content, but also, again, how to critically think about it and going that extra step. And then if you have any other things that are specific to you, then the tutoring will help with that. And if you have mindset things that you need to work on getting your mind right, then we have coaching calls as well.
If you are not feeling motivated, if you are procrastinating, if you are just, you know, if you just feel like you're in the sludge. I love that word. Jump on a coaching call with me and we can fix it. I can help you fix it. So the Nursing association community is going to open on Sunday.
