MAY 10 LIVE SHOW | The Nursing School Show | ASK US ANYTHING!

Matthew and Tina teach nursing students how fundamentals shifts from memorization to critical thinking, using cardiac and stroke pathophysiology as examples. They walk through their Nursing SOS study system: the Four-Core Method, Pharm4 for pharmacology, and note-taking frameworks designed to focus on high-yield content instead of everything.

Hi.
Going live.
Hi, everyone. Oh, boy, you are live. Welcome, welcome, welcome.
Good morning. Instagram.
Tina's giving Instagram.
We're setting it up.
Hi, everyone.
Just a couple of minutes late.
Welcome to the nursing school show.
Good morning.
Welcome to Wednesday. Welcome to. What else is going on?
Almost summer.
Almost summer, Spring. Is it almost summer? Summer, spring, something like that. How is everyone doing today?
Gonna be 70 degrees here all week.
It's finally getting a little warmer.
Finally. The snow is melted.
Hi.
Hi. Hi, Alina.
So let us know where you're joining from, Thomas, and let us know what your nursing school questions are today.
We're talking about fundamentals.
We're talking. Oh, okay, good. Because I didn't write that down, I.
Think who was here on Monday. We're talking about fundamentals today.
We are talking about fundamentals today.
That's what I had.
Emphasis on the fun, right? Can I say, Can I. Can I get an amen?
Fundamentals.
Fundamentals.
Hi, Amani.
Let me know if they are fun or not for you.
And if not, why yes. Welcome to Nurses Week.
That's right, it is Nurses Week. Happy Nurses Week to all the nurses. Which is not me.
That's okay.
That is all right.
Georgia Manchester.
Hello. Hello. Hello.
Good morning, friends.
Also, if you guys did not know, the nursing SOS membership community is open just for a couple more days.
Do you see the post it notes?
Oh, yes.
We have a whole bunch of names that I need to add.
Those are the names of the people that have joined and there are more going up. Do some shout outs here in a little while. So if you're a new member, welcome. If you're not a new member, join.
Yes, I think that's about it.
So nursingschoolofsuccess.com join or on Instagram. If you look in the bio, it is there.
The link is in the bio.
Watching you from uae. I really love you guys.
Thank you. Okay, so who's starting nursing school in the summer or fall? Who has not started nursing school yet?
I really need to know how to study four fundamentals and how to take notes.
Yes, fabulous.
Stick around. That is our topic for today.
Analina, you have access to the study system inside the community. So here's your. Okay, let's jam on this.
May 30th. May 30th, awesome.
Notes starts on page seven. So nursing SOS members, friends, on page seven of the study system is starts our note taking section. So I highly recommend that you snag that inside the community.
It is under step three of building your study Plan at the very bottom. All the nursing school study system downloads are there for members. Yes, 100% that is there for you.
And then in the community too, we have our whole note taking system and video like we walk you through.
So definitely go through videos on it too. In Nursing SOS Membership Community. Ms. Will, I'm graduating next month. Congratulations. Still need all the help I can get.
Don't we all, don't we all need all that?
Not just related to nursing school just.
Or the nclex.
Yes, all the help we can get.
Aracelis. Yes, I know. I'm so excited to have you. I saw some of your notes. So, yeah, so on. Like Matthew just said in step number three, inside the nursing SS membership community, we have the study system there for you. You're looking on page seven for note taking. Fundamentals, you guys, is such a big term. Not because it's challenging. Not because, I mean it can be challenging. It's definitely not as challenging as Med Search. So there is that. When you get into nursing school, fundamentals will often be your first class. You take fundamentals. Some schools call it foundations, call it different things.
Yeah.
Also note that health assessment.
All schools might name them differently. For the most part it's fundamentals. But they might want to be special and name some things differently. That's all right. It's all the same.
Yes. So when you are in fundamentals, your focus is going to be really on coming up with a solid study plan that will bring you through the rest of your program. So it's interesting because we come in to nursing school from our anatomy and physiology, our microbiology and our biology, like statistics, all the prereqs. Right. That you had to take in order to get into nursing school. School. And those prereqs you study a very different way. You study a very different way for like math, statistics or biology than you do in nursing school. Like in biology, it's literally like, hey, what is the Krebs cycle? Explain this. There's no, like, you know, like, you just have to explain what the Krebs cycle is. Right. You have to explain like anaerobic versus aerobic respiration in biology or A and P. When you get to nursing school, it kind of switches. Now you have a patient with a problem that the Krebs cycle fits into. So it's, it's not memorization. You have to be able to make that leap in fundamentals from how you studied in your prereqs and memorization to now critically think. Thinking about everything that you're Learning about, you now have to apply the information. So not only do you have to know it first, of course you have to know it, you got to know your stuff. But then you also have to go one step further and make sure that you are critically thinking about it and can apply it to a patient situation. Does that all make sense? Does that all make sense? So let's, let's use like cardiac as an example, right? Like when you're in amp, you learn how the blood moves through the heart, right? How it moves through the body, all the blood vessels, and we memorized all the bones and stuff. I couldn't tell you all the bones in the body. I don't know the things you forget when you go to nursing school because honestly, you don't really need to know that pathway of blood through the heart, how the blood works, like capillaries and the blood vessels and the veins and the arteries and all these things. And then when you get to nursing school, then, now we have cardiac disorders like heart failure, congestive heart failure, right sided heart failure, left sided heart failure, cardiomyopathy, myocardial infarction, all of these cardiac things. And now you have to, now that you know how the blood works through the body, how it moves through the heart, how it moves through the body. Now we build off of that. That, right? We build off of that and we move on and say, okay, now we have a patient who's had a heart attack. What is that? What is the pathophysiology of that? Okay, and then now what do we do about it? What signs and symptoms do we expect to see? What nursing assessments will we do, which like what will we look for in our patients and what interventions are we going to do to help them? But it all builds off that knowledge that you got from amp of how the blood moves through the heart, right? But the point is critical thinking. You have to make sure you're making that leap to critical thinking. And if you don't, in fundamentals, you're really going to struggle in med surg, you're really going to struggle when you get to those, when you get to those really serious disorders, right? And oftentimes too in fundamentals, you're also going through like your health assessment. So you're learning how to assess a patient, you're learning what's normal and then when you get to med surgery, you're learning what's abnormal.
So I think a key part of that is that it builds on to each other, right? So just be aware of that. Even your prereqs and going into fundamentals, Fundamentals builds on that, that foreknowledge. So yes, you do need, do need to hang on to all that knowledge. But then, yes, just learning to apply it and fundamentals is the beginning of learning to apply it, learning critical thinking and then that goes forward into med surg, into the rest of nursing school. So fundamentals is kind of the, the gateway into it. But just realize that, yes, it is more moving towards critical thinking. How to apply what you know from prereqs into nursing school and just realize that that keeps building on each other. It's a fun. It's fundamentals, it is the foundation. Right. So just moving forward, it's not one of those things that, oh, I can just cram for this, memorize things and then be done with it when the next semester comes up. That's not the way that nursing school works. Right. So just realize that fundamentals, it is, it is the base. So learn how to move towards critical thinking, applying your knowledge and kind of thinking more in terms of the why and the how as opposed to just memorizing terms.
Yes, and we do like fundamentals is a really good practice ground for critical thinking because you are kind of learning a little bit of pharmacology. You are learning a health assessment, you are learning how to assess a patient. You are learning some more common med surg disorders. You'll learn things like stroke, diabetes, heart failure. Those are really three big ones that you will see at clinical. Right. You'll see, you'll see some things like that. And so you are learning about those things. And so it's a fantastic time to make that leap. Okay. And so in the study system, actually it starts on page 25, if I remember right, our study models. So fundamentals is kind of interesting because it's like, it's, it's almost like a catch all. You do a lot of different things. You do a little bit of pharmacology, you do a little bit of med surge, you do a little, you know, a little this, little that. And so you will take study strategies from different areas. Okay. You want to get a solid note taking strategy down. Who was talking about notes? Oh, Analina. Yeah. How to take notes. Yes. Like I said, that's on page 17. So you have to make sure when you are taking notes that you are trying to catch everything that the instructor is saying in class because that's what you're most likely going to be test on. You guys, that's huge. Huge. That is a huge deal. When you are studying in nursing school. Like the. One of the biggest lies in nursing school is that you're going to be tested on everything. You are not. You are not going to be tested on it and on everything. You can't be. They can't possibly test you on everything. That would be hours and hours and hours of exams. And that's not how it is. They have to pick and choose what they test you on. And once you start recognizing the patterns, once you have answered a lot of NCLEX practice questions, once you have taken a lot of nursing school exams, you will notice these patterns. Okay? There are defined patterns of things that they test you on, which is so funny, which is why we talk about it in our study system. We talk about it at length inside our nursing SOS membership community. We walk you through exactly what you are going to be tested on. We walk you through exactly how to study for it. Because there are these defined study processes to use. And you really, if you are spending so much time like trying to know everything about everything, just like we were just talking about, you're not going to be focused on the right things, which is critical thinking. If you are just trying to memorize everything, you're not going to be focused on the actual things that matter, the things you're going to be tested on. Okay? So to start, when you are taking notes in fundamentals, when you're taking notes in med surge, when you are taking notes in nursing school, try to catch as much of what the instructor is saying as possible and then focus your studying on the things that you talked about in class, those topics. Okay. Because what your instructor talks about in class is what you're most likely to be tested on. And also following our four core method in our study system and our farm four method in the study system. So the four core method is on page 34. Okay. It starts on page 34. So this goes for fundamentals too. You have to understand that there's only defined things that they are going to test you on. And you have to know the pathophysiology of things. You have to know the signs and symptoms of things. You have to know how to assess a patient in fundamentals, that is huge in fundamentals, you are going to be tested a lot on how to assess your patients. Okay. And then once you understand the assessment that we can now move on to nursing interventions, what are you going to do to help your patient based on what you just assessed? Does that make sense? It's basically the nursing process, right? We assess our patients first. So but here's the key. It all starts with the pathophysiology, which is why you have to make sure that you understand that amp stuff like we just talked about. You have to understand how the blood moves through the heart, you have to understand how the heart works before you can then move on to that critical thinking part in fundamentals and take it to the next level and start to.
Critically think about it.
Connect the dots between pathophysiology inside symptoms or assessment or interventions.
Yeah, so again, it's, it's, yeah, it's connecting the dots. Right. So you need to know how the body is supposed to work before you can dive into disorders and what's going on. That's not working.
Yes, yeah, 100%. So, yeah. In the study system, inside the Nursing Essence membership community, because I know a lot of you are members. Check out page 25 is the one that you want. Page 25, we walk you through all our study models. So you know exactly how to study, you know exactly what to study and you know how to learn things faster and retain them longer. That's the key in nursing school, like we just talked about. There is so much too much information. There is too much information to know in such a short amount of time. You have to focus your study time. If you don't, you will feel like you will set yourself up for failure on your exams. We hear about it all the time. Students tell us all the time, well, I wanted to join the community and I didn't and now I failed my exam so I'm coming back to join the next time. Like, don't do that to yourself. You have to understand how to study in nursing school. If you don't, then you are really going to struggle on your exams. There's just no two ways around it. Studying for nursing school is very, very different than studying for your anatomy and physiology, your microbiology, your biology, your statistics, all the things we just talked about. It's very different because you have to make that leap to critical thinking now. It's not just about memorization and things build off each other, which is exactly what Matthew was just talking about. Things build on each other. You have to understand the patho and then, then you can understand the critical thinking. So these are all the things we walk you through inside the community and inside our study system. So make sure that you snag the study system, that you get the DRC critical thinking model, that you get the four core method, that you get the form four strategy. You need these study tools, you need these study frameworks to use as you study. It will walk you through the exact things to focus on. On. So you just have to make sure that you are not trying to memorize everything in the textbook, that you're not trying to read everything in the textbook. Because it's really like, if you do that, you're just going to waste a ton of hours. You're going to get to your exam unprepared. We hear about it all the time. It's not. It's not the way to go. Don't do that to yourself. We actually just had a student. Well, did you get my email yesterday, you guys? And actually I posted about it on my stories yesterday. I. We got an email from a student who said that her name is Jennifer, she had failed her term, and then she used the videos inside the community, made a huge comeback. And that really got me thinking, like, okay, how many students, like, how many members have we had who join the nursing ESSENCE membership community after they have failed a term or after they have failed an exam? And so I went back and I looked at like all our testimonials and I was just shocked. I was so actually shocked at how many students joined the community after they failed a test or after they failed a term and had to retake it. I was just amazed. I stopped at 10. And so I posted like 10 of them on Instagram last night. I stopped at 10. And there's more, which is just bananas to me. It's. It's crazy. I just, I want you guys to realize that when you are studying in nursing school, how you study matters. And if you try to go it alone, you're risking your grade. Like, there's, there's just no two ways around it. Like, the NCLEX just changed, right? We keep hearing from nursing students all the time that their instructors are not on the same page. They don't know what they're teaching. They don't know what's going to be on the exam. Like, there's a lot of things that are outside your control right now, but you still have control over what you learn and how you learn. All right? So the students that join our community, like, we are literally here to hold your hand through it all. We are going to teach you what you need to know to pass your exams. That is what we do, which is a fantastic thing. Like, it's just so great to hear from students. Although I wish that they hadn't been failed an exam before or I wish they didn't have to retake a term, but now that they're in the community. Like they're set up for success. Like, go back on my stories. Like read our students stories that I just posted last night. Like literally they failed an exam or they failed a term and then they used our videos. Like they joined the community after that and then now they're passing with flying colors. There is a difference, there is a huge difference between trying to do it yourself and trying to learn it. Figure it all out yourself and learn things like wing it. You know, learn things on the fly and wing it. There's a difference between that and actually having a step by step system to follow that is going to set you up for success. It's a very big difference between the two. So make sure that you are setting yourself up for success. I do not want you to fail an examination before you come to us. Okay? Like, be proactive. We talked about this on Monday. Like we like being as just people. We like being reactive. Like, don't make it a problem until there's a problem kind of thing. But like Matthew, you said a couple weeks ago, like dig a well before your Thursday. Yeah, it's the well phrase.
I need to look up that saying and kind of put it in my, in my bank. In your repertoire of dad sayings, I guess, or whatever.
But dad saying.
Yeah, yeah. Building a well. When's the best time to build a well? Well before you needed it.
Before you're thirsty.
Yes.
You know, so don't like. Okay. And here's the thing about the community too, that is kind of a bummer is that it's closed for the majority of the year. So what happens oftentimes is students don't join when enrollment is open and then they start their term and they struggle and then they want to join, but it's closed. How it happens. I mean, we get emails every day. We literally get emails every day from students wanting to join and it's closed. So be proactive, okay? Like take, you know, set yourself up for success. If you were starting nursing school now in the summer, if you were starting nursing school in the fall, like you, you really have to be considering these things. Friends. Like, like we just talked about, the NCLEX just changed. There's a lot of up people in chaos in nurses going now. Actually a lot of our members are using that word chaos. Like it seems like it's just chaos as nursing programs are starting to transition and change and adapt to all these new things. But I tell you what, like here, like our team, we're not, like, we're not in chaos. We know exactly what to teach you. We know exactly how to teach you. We have very defined study processes. We have a very defined way of teaching that is just above and beyond anything else you're going to find out there. Like, it's just what we do. It's just. So this is a funny thing too. Like, there's a very big difference between being a good nurse and being a good teacher. Very big difference. So here on our team, like, we are very good at teaching, we are very good at helping you understand the information so that you can pass your exams. Right. So just make sure that you're considering that as you go into your next term that you are setting yourself up for success. You are 100% capable, my friend. You. You have what it takes to pass nursing school. You have what it takes to pass nursing school. We're here to make sure that it happens. Right. That is what we do. Do you have anything to add?
Yeah. So just definitely, definitely we can help you if you're not doing as well as you. You want to be doing in nursing school. Definitely. Again, membership is open until the end of the week, so.
Oh, yeah, it's open till Friday. Yesterday.
I'll join.
It's.
It's only a couple more days. Only a couple more days. So nursing school, success.com join. So if you're not doing as well as you want to be, definitely take a look at that. Join the community, get involved. So that's one. If you're going to get started soon or you're not in that pickle yet, don't get in that pickle and join and be part of the community so you don't get in that tough spot where you are being reactive. Be proactive, like we're saying, and really take control of nursing school. Take control of your decisions, take control of your education. And again, this is just a season. This is just a season. So buckle down and do it. And then after that, that's. You'll be a nurse. Yeah, that'll be great. So, yeah, you don't want to miss out or you don't want to get those bad grades and then be reactive and now have to go back and then do it again. Again. We can help you if you are in that boat already, but if you're not, that's not an ideal boat to be in. So join us beforehand and do that. So again, we're open for a little bit.
We will help you avoid that boat.
And the other thing, also, probably the last thing, and the biggest thing is use the resources also, once you join, use resources. You can't just join and sit on your hands and not change how you're doing things and expect things to change. That doesn't work either, right?
Yes.
So we're here to help you. We are here to guide you. But you still need to take those moves and take those steps.
Yes. We had a. So you're just talking about joining before you start school. So we had a member just recently who sent us an email. Is fantastic. She starts. Actually, she just started two days ago. She just started two days ago. But she had joined when the enrollment was last time. And she went through the study stuff, our study video. She went through our time management video. She went through her dose cup course. She did everything right. Like, she did everything that we recommend. Rocking dose Calc before your, before your program starts, making sure you have a solid study plan down, a solid time management plan down. These are things we walk you through step by step inside the community. She did all of that and she messaged us. She just felt so prepared and so confident going into her, her program. I mean, think about the change you guys like when you walk into nursing school, if you're confident and ready, man, I mean, nothing's gonna stop you, right? It's a very different feeling than when you walk into nursing school and you're like, I don't know what's gonna happen. Like, this is gonna be really hard and I'm really scared and everyone else is really scared. No, no, no, no. Like, join the community. We will help you come up with a solid study plan, a solid time management plan. We will teach you do. You will be prepared, scared for when your program starts. Like above and beyond everyone else in your school. It happens all the time. So that was just a lovely email to get because I just love hear. I love hearing that. It's so good.
Lewis has a great question. Is it better to do monthly or yearly to annual? So we do offer month by month or we do offer annual. Annual. You do get a little bit of savings and you also get one of our physical boxes, a farm box.
You get the farm box that has.
All the farm things.
Things, farm flashcards, pharmacology process right there.
So yeah, definitely. If you really want to go all in and definitely get a little bit perks, do that.
Yes. Now I was going to pull up.
There it is. And there's that.
This one. Oops. Oh, okay. It's a screenshot. Okay, let's do a few member shout outs. Okay. Welcome to the Nursing Essence membership Community to Londa, Carolyn, Jeannie, Joanna, Nicole, Peggy, Melissa, Leticia, Antonique, Susan, Stephanie, Shanta, Taylor, Marjorie, Jasmine, and Ginger. Hopefully I don't leave off where I was. Okay, I'll do a few more later if I. If I do not say your name. I did not forget you, I promise. We did member shout outs on Monday on the live. So if you want to hear your name, go back on Monday, if you joined over the weekend, or if you joined a couple days ago. All right, so when you join the annual plan, Lewis, because you asked, you will get our pharmacology box, which comes with our pharmacology flashcards. So you'll get the pharmacology flashcards to help you out with pharm. They are absolutely fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. You guys. I sent an email yesterday. There's a lot of, like, study guides or flashcards or stuff that are available to help you through nursing school. But the problem that I see a lot of times is that they're missing information, which I find a little weird. I know it happens, but what I've noticed is that I think oftentimes when, when you try to condense information down too much, you can lose some of the important things. And I've just noticed that in some of the study guides that I see on Etsy or flashcards or what have you, just out in the world, it can lose the pertinent information that you need to pass your exam. So we have very high standards here. I sent an email about that yesterday. So these flashcards have the information that you need to know to pass your exams. Like there's no two ways around it. This is the stuff you have to know. We also have the key critical thinking points and key points and everything here too. So when you join the annual plan, Louis, you will get our pharmacology flashcards. And there's two sets. We have the medication classes for you and then we have the individual med cards. So this follows our study process, our Pharm4 method for studying. We walk you through how to study pharmacology and literally save you. You know, you are going to study FARM in half the time than if you just try to figure it out yourself. Like following our method, you're gonna, you're gonna study FARM so much faster than the other students in your class simply because we know how to teach it and we know how to teach it well and you will understand it. Something that I haven't mentioned actually yet this morning is that inside the community, friends, you don't just get the videos like you don't just get the study plan. You don't just get the time management plan. Like, we don't just give you all these study guides and all these videos to figure it out yourself. No, no, no, no. Like every Monday night, Nicole, our lead nurse, Nicole and I are on a community call where you can come on and ask questions about studying, time management, procrastination. If you're not feeling motivated, like, jump on the community call Nicole. She does two hours of tutoring calls every week so you have the ability to get on a call. And Monday, they're Monday nights at 5 Pacific, 8 Eastern, and Thursdays at 5 Pacific, 8 Eastern. So when you join the community, it's not just like you pull up a video and try to figure it out yourself. No, the videos are great. Watch them because they're helpful. But if you have questions, like, if you leave your lecture class and listen to your instructor for three hours and now you're super confused about stuff, great, come to us. All right, Submit a tutor form. Jump on a tutoring call. Jump on a community call. Jump on a coaching call. We have all these live calls every week inside the community for you to join, to ask questions, to get help, to get the help that you need, which really sets our community apart from a whole lot of other things out there. You know, this is not just like, do it yourself. We're not just going to give you a video and let you figure it out by yourself. We're here to literally hold your hand through it. So you get the tutoring, you get the coaching, you get these, like, live interactions with us, with our team so that you can get your questions answered. We also have, I just mentioned it briefly, but our tutor form. So anytime, anytime you have a question, we actually have a form inside the community, inside the membership community that you can fill out. Ask your questions and a nurse on our team will get back to you within 24 hours. So if you just need a quick response, if you don't want to wait for a tutor hour, if you don't want to join the tutor hour like the tutor cult, that's fine. Submit your questions to our team. We will get back to you. It is so, so important. Apgar score, fabulous example. We have whole things on that inside, you guys. We have a whole maternity, we have a whole peds course, we have a whole labor and delivery. All the things, like all the, all the videos you need, they're all there. We can walk you through that to help you learn it faster. It's just so fabulous. I Love how we. How much we give you guys. Like, it's just fabulous. And our students are just crushing it, which is just the best. It's just the best. Nikita, how can I study Farm? What did we say?
We were talking about Farm. We said that we're going to be talking about Farm on Monday.
Let's do that.
So we will talk about Farm on Monday. So if you're not yet subscribed, hit the Bell on YouTube or follow on Instagram and you'll be notified when that happens. We do have these. Ask us anything every Monday and Wednesday morning at some time.
Yes. Oh, I only did, like, a third of the list. A quarter of the list. I need to do the rest of the members. AMAs Monday, Wednesday, same time, same place. So what is it, seven Pacific?
Seven Pacific.
Yes. Ten Eastern? Yeah. And all the other times.
So there you go.
Okay.
All right.
Like I said just a few minutes ago, I'm gonna do member shout outs. I just did a few. I'm going to do more right now. If I missed your name, it's not because I missed you. It's because we did member shout outs on Monday, too. So here are more of our new nursing SOS members, and I don't think these students are actually on the board. So your post it notes are not up yet. I will be adding them today. Okay. Welcome to the nursing SOS membership community. Ginger, Shay, Kyle, Kelly, Lizbeth, Chiquita, Sherry, Mamie, Zola, Wanda, Jacqueline, Navneet, Manchinique, Myra, Idris, Michael, Margaret, Jamie, Debbie, Jessica, Emily, Megan, Heather and Catherine.
Hooray.
Love it. Okay. I am so excited, like, so above and beyond excited to help you pass nursing school. I mean, it's just bananas to me how many of our members they're emailing us, posting in our community. Like, everyone's having so much success. It is fabulous.
Cellular Girl. You guys are okay. Your name is not there. We probably shot if you remember you. Hopefully we shouted you out. If not, I'll shout you out right now.
But you guys are awesome. Thanks a lot for always being, like, the best tutors. It's because of you that I'm a good student. When did you join the community? Because if you joined over the weekend, I shouted you out on Monday. So. Yes.
And again, just really quick, you're saying that, oh, it's because of us that you're a good student, and that is not true. You're a good student because you are.
A good student because you're putting in the work.
Putting in the work. So you're doing it that you are the one that's actually taking the test. We are not going to take take your tests for you. If you have not noticed, that's not the way it works. That and you wouldn't want me to take your tests anyway. You would not want me to take.
Your test so you wouldn't want Matthew to take your exam.
You are taking your test. You are taking everything again, like I said earlier, this live, you are using the resources and actually putting it to work. And you're the reason we're just here to help you along.
