Essential nursing care for MS patients focuses on safety, mobility aids, and managing symptoms. Key interventions include bladder and bowel management, medication adherence, and a low-fat, high-fiber diet with adequate fluids. Promoting activity and assistive devices helps preserve function as the disease progresses.
Chapters
Let's walk through some nursing interventions that you'll need to do for a patient with multiple sclerosis. So, because multiple sclerosis involves the destruction of the myelin sheath in the neuron, so nerve impulses can't reach where they need to go as easily, you're going to need to monitor safety. The patient is going to use assistive devices as they need. You'll encourage fluid intake, a low fat, high fiber and high potassium diet, encourage an active, healthy lifestyle as much as possible, and then supportive care to maintain function. Because this is a chronic and progressive autoimmune disorder, it is progressive and going to continually get worse. So trying to help the patient to really have as much function as they can over time is ideal. And then regular bladder and bowel elimination and medication management as well.
