Nursing School ASK ME ANYTHING!

Christina Rafano and Matthew answer nursing students' questions about managing the workload and studying effectively. They debunk myths like everyone fails, teach a four-pillar framework covering pathophysiology through nursing interventions, and recommend studying two hours for every lecture hour using flashcards and active learning.

Hello, good evening. Good evening. Hi, everyone.
Hello.
Welcome, welcome. Welcome to another episode of Nursing school show.
Sorry, TikTok, you can't see me.
Okay, so. Oh, hi, TikTok. So we got YouTube, we got Instagram, and we have Tick Tock on with us. Hi, guys. Hello. Good evening, Melissa.
Hi, Melissa.
How is everyone doing this? Fine. Midweek.
Hi, Darubi.
Midweek, right? It is Wednesday, right?
No, just a couple days ago.
All right, well, we are going to get into your questions.
So the first thing I kind of want to start with is, like, motivation for nursing school. I think that this is the kind of a weird time of the year when we are just getting into. Accepted into nursing school. And y' all have your acceptance letters, right?
Yay.
Congratulations. And it can be tough when it's all very exciting and it's all very new, and then you end up getting a whole bunch of stuff from your school and you have a thousand things to do, and it can just seem very overwhelming. So I think just stay in the course. Make sure that you are not listening to the nursing school rumors, because there's a thousand of them circling around.
Right.
How many nursing school rumors have you heard lately? Let's play a game. I'm curious what you have heard from those other students, upperclassmen, other students in your class. What is everyone saying about nursing school and how it's going to be? I think the biggest. Probably the biggest rumors when I was in nursing school is like, yeah, no, everyone fails. That's always a big one. Everyone always says that everyone fails.
Yeah, so that's a good question. So let's throw that out there. What are some of these rumors or some of the horror stories that you hear people talking about about nursing school? So that's question number one. Question number two is, who is in the same boat that Christina just talked about and just got your acceptance letter and is super excited to get going with nursing school? I'm curious. So that is question number one. Question number two. And let's see, just to throw it out there, question number three. Where are you guys all from?
Where are you at?
All right, so let's. Let's do that. I saw a couple people pop in. Oh, here's one on Instagram, say it says that they've heard that half the class fails.
Half the class fails.
So just doing the math on that. That doesn't seem like that that's accurate. Just saying they said that with nursing school, we don't have a life anymore. Lol. All right.
Don't have a life. Anymore.
And those that are in nursing school currently, as I'm. As we're talking about these, these rumors, do you. Do you find them being true or not true? Oh, New Jersey. Hi, New Jersey. Hi. Colorado. San Diego.
Awesome.
North Carolina. Oops. Let's see.
I'm trying to figure out a poll on TikTok. Let's just do this.
Literally no life. Okay. So a bunch of people saying that once you enter nursing school, you do not have a life anymore. Is that. Is that true or is that false?
I think that that is. Well, it depends on your perspective and it depends on what your life was before, I suppose. What does having a life mean to you? I think that there's. We always like to talk about nursing school in, like, seasons rather than trying to do a third family, a third nursing school and a third sleeping. Right. That's not possible. So, yes, you are going to have to give up some things in your life to do nursing school, whether that be some family time or, you know, work, if you want to go down part time or things like that. Like, you only have 24 hours in a day. Right. We only have seven days a week. So this is a season of nursing school where you will have to, you know, cut out something in order to study more than. Than you were a year ago if you are just starting nursing school in the fall, obviously. So we think it's a really good. I know you agree to think about it as seasons rather than like, yeah, we're just gonna split our time equally with all the things that we're doing. It's a lot more realistic.
Yeah. So, Micaiah, you just asked how should I divide my time into studying since they. They emphasize time management so much. So, yeah, that's really what we're talking about. And this goes towards the. The myth or not so myth. A lot of people think that this is true, that once you enter nursing school that you do not have a life anymore. I would think that, yeah, like Christina say said, it's really a phase. So you do have a life. Your life is just nursing school now. So, yeah, it depends on your definition. So you need to make sure that it's. It's more positive to spin it that way. And I know that it can be semantics just like words, but it does really play with your mind and you want to be in the best space. Mind. Space. Mindset as possible. So, yeah, altering the way you think about it, saying, okay, my life is nursing school. This is just a phase. It's going to be a quick phase depending on two years, four years or however long. It's going to be a quick phase, but I'm going to spend 100% of my time really focused on studying on that. The. Does that mean that other parts of my life won't get the attention that it once did? Yes, but that's okay because afterwards you can either go back to that or who knows, your life may be different in two to four years times and you'll never go back to that, but that's fine. Okay. As well. So, yeah, how to divide my time into studying. So because they emphasize time management. Yes. Time management is really important. Determining what's important to you at this season of life, I think is a good question to ask yourself and give yourself grace on those things. And some people may understand or may not understand what you deem important in your life. If it's phase and not.
Yep, for sure.
Yeah.
It really is about seasons and to also make note that just remember that this season will pass. So nursing school, even though it's going to be this big thing that you're doing in life right now, for this season, it will pass. You know, so this is just, you know, for if you're in a, you know, four year program or two year program or 18 month accelerated program, this is just how it is for now. It will pass.
So. And Ashley, on Instagram, you make a good point. Time management helps me have a life. I need time for my kiddos. So yeah, you deem what's important and of course family is really important. So you do need to carve out that time. And if that means that you need to spend less time doing other things, then so be it. So it is. At the end of the day, it's up to you. And at the end of the day, it's your decision to do whatever you want to stay in nursing school to decide that it's too much and do other things, that's fine too.
You can't just not see your kids for two years.
Yeah. So you definitely need to just decide what is a priority at this point of time in your life. So.
Yep, absolutely.
Yeah. But honestly, it's. It's all worth it. Yeah, I believe so.
So, Nina Bella, you said time management was horrible. Yes. That is oftentimes a huge part of the either, you know, nursing students who either pass classes or don't need exactly. Like you were saying, is how do you manage your time? How do you overcome when you get burned out or when you fail exam, you know, what do you do those things, those decisions that you make every day.
Right.
Whether to study or to watch Netflix or to, you know, take a nap or to keep. Keep pushing through even if you're super burned out or tired. Those kind of. Those daily decisions are really what can either make or break your success in nursing school. I don't know. On our coaching calls, inside the membership community, we are. Nicole and I are constantly talking about this balance between burnout and when you're just not feeling motivated, because we also don't want to get to the point where you're so burned out that you just cannot learn anything else versus when you are just, you know, you're just kind of not feeling it. You know, you are not super motivated to study, but you know that you need to study. So that's kind of toeing that line. Right. There's a balance there. We don't want you to get burned out where you literally are reading a textbook and nothing else is going your mind. We do not want you to hit that burnout point like that wall. I think we've all been there. Have you guys been there where you hit that wall and it's like, I just cannot. Can't. Like nothing else is going in right now.
Yeah. So that's really important to definitely tread that line between burnout and taking some time to rest. But not too long of a time to rest, because if you do, then I don't know people that tend to stop or what. What is. It's. It's physics or whatever that things that tend to stop will. Yeah. Not move forward anymore.
I don't know. So I know that an object in motion stays in motion.
Yep. So keep moving. And if you slow down, you can slow down a little bit. The other part of that that I kind of want to go into a little bit, because there. There are some people that said, oh, like Nina still said that you failed Farm by five points going back in next year. So, yeah. Never giving up. That's. That's important there too. But another part of managing time and time management is using your time efficiently and effectively as well. So one is prioritizing what things you need to do. And once you get that in order, do those things as efficiently and as effectively as possible.
Yes.
So, Carrie, how should I do stuff? That's exactly right. How should you do stuff? Do stuff as efficiently, as effectively as possible. So we'll dive into that a little bit. You have a general rule of studying study times that we can dive into. Someone on Instagram a little bit ago was asking how to study for Med surg. And then I think probably we'll just start off with. Yeah, let's just start off with those. And then Micaiah, we'll jump back into more granular details on like how to answer, select all that apply questions. So we'll dive into that in a little bit. So stick on the line. But let's still stay on this time management and using your time effectively and efficiently. Let's stick with that for now. So what's your guideline? Let's say start with what's your guideline for studying? Length of time to study and then also how to efficiently and what to study for med surg. Because part of studying efficiently is knowing what to study and what not to study.
Yeah. How do we just pass nursing school, you guys? So let's talk about it. Lex Coley, thank you so much on TikTok. You guys. This is my girl.
Hey, Lex.
Get her subscription, guys, she's amazing. The reason I made A's and M and RN now. You're right.
You're the reason.
You're the reason. Yes. Okay.
She can help you get there. I'm just here along for the ride. There you go.
By the way, you guys all have really good questions today. Okay, go.
Okay. No, I'm just saying you haven't seen it, but I really like our thumbnail for YouTube today.
Oh, it's pretty funny.
If you saw it. Did you see it? Yeah. Okay.
Yeah, thanks. Okay, so if you are so nivea, this is also for you. Okay? So hang tight. What to do in an accelerated program and how to pass all of this, all of this is all connected. You cannot. Okay, you guys hear me right now? You cannot go into nursing school and use the same study strategies that you use in your prereqs. It will not work. It does not work. It will all break and fall apart. How you have studied, how you have studied up until now is not how you need to study moving forward in order to pass nursing school. That's just the name of the game. That is just how it is. So when you are in nursing school, your study strategies have to switch. There's no two ways around that. So in order to do that, we always, always, always recommend that you focus on four things when you are studying in nursing school. Pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, nursing assessment, and nursing interventions. Those are the things that you need to focus on because that is what you're going to be tested on now. I get so much so, so, so much pushback on this because nursing students are like, well, what about this? What about this? So what about. And my instructor said, we need to know this and this and this. And you guys know. All right, just no focus on those four main categories. Pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, nursing assessment and nursing interventions. You have to. You cannot memorize everything in your textbook. It is just not going to happen, all right? Ever. You cannot learn everything in a textbook in one term. It's not realistic, it's not possible. You cannot read all of that and retain it. And for sure you cannot read all of that and be able to critically think about it on your exam. That is just not how it works. That's not how. It's not possible. So focus on those four main categories. Patho signs and symptoms, nursing assessment and nursing interventions. That is how you're going to pass. Now, Matthew, you asked what's the benchmark for number of hours to study?
Okay, so before you dive into that, go for it. Kenji's asking, what study method would you recommend? So we're going to dive into that first. We're diving into what to study. So for med surg. What to study, really, those are the four main things. Are there other, like, anything auxiliary things outside of that? Yes. Will you get tested on it? Maybe, but one or two majority for exam, the majority of what you need to know is tied up in those four things. What are they again?
Pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, nursing assessment and nursing interventions. Okay, so four things.
Those are the things that you focus on.
Focus. So those four things.
So Kenji, focus on those things. We're going to dive into time, length of time that you should study that and then, and then the study method after that. So stick around. We will get to that. Let's see, two questions before we dive in. Your TikTok is nursing SOS official. Official nursing SOS official Instagram is just nursing SOS.
Yes, we've gotten some questions about that on YouTube. So YouTube. Hello everyone. Make sure you're subscribed to our YouTube channel if you have not already. We are at Nursing SOS on YouTube, you guys. We put out fantastic videos on YouTube every single week. It is awesome. So Instagram, I also do daily stories on Instagram and TikTok. I love TikTok. So I don't post as much on TikTok as I do on YouTube and Instagram though. So TikTok, come on over to Instagram at Nursing SOS. Okay, so make sure. Sorry, make sure that you are studying for two hours for every hour that you are in class. That is how you study in nursing school. Okay? So you're going to focus on these four things. Patho signs and symptoms, nursing assessment and nursing interventions. And when you do that, use a benchmark of studying for two hours outside of class for every hour that you are in lecture class. All right? Now this I also get a lot of pushback from because the students are like, well, Christina, I have a 16 hour lecture class. Okay, well, if you have a 16 hour lecture class, you guys like use this as a benchmark. Okay? Don't get mad at me. Don't freak out about it. Okay? To two rules. Don't get mad at Christina. Don't freak out about it. All right, let's just be. Let's be realistic here. If you. Let's. So how do you use this? Let's say, for example, you have like a three hour pharmacology class, and then you have a, let's say a four hour med search class. All right. Or a four hour fundamentals class. So every week you would study for eight hours for fundamentals and study six hours for pharmacology. If you have a four hour fundamentals class and a three hour pharmacology class, double the time. Okay? Study for two hours outside of class for every hour that you are in lecture. Does that make sense? Are we all on the same page?
Awesome.
All right. Wow. Instagram. Sorry, I'm way behind on you because I was scrolled up. Hello, everyone on Instagram. Hi, Jessica.
So let's see, while you're doing it, say hi. Say hi, everyone. Hello, everyone. Let's see. User and a bunch of numbers. Is this the same for fundamentals?
Yes.
Yes.
So anytime you are studying a disorder, anything that is like even fluid and electrolytes. So this is huge for fluid and electrolytes and fundamentals, you have to know what is happening in the body. What is the pathophysiology. What are we trying to fix? You guys? Okay, Patho. Everything comes down to the patho. Pathophysiology. Signs and symptoms of hyperkalemia, hypokalemia. You've got to know. You've got to know the signs and symptoms. Nursing assessment. What are we going to assess for? Nursing interventions? What are we going to do about it? All right, those are the four key things that you've got to focus on. So we also just. Just to make sure to make note in your mind that the nursing assessment does include lab values. Okay? So things like, you know, hyperkalemia, you've got to know what the normal ranges are for your Potassium level. Okay. And then the nursing interventions include giving medications and it includes patient education. Right. So just make note of that. All right, so when we say nursing interventions, I also mean medications and patient education. And then nursing assessment also means lab values. So for fundamentals, that was a big question people are asking on TikTok. That is how you do that. It is the same for fundamentals.
Okay, so Kenji, you're saying, man, that means 12 hours for me. So breaking that down, that means that you're in class for six hours then, is that correct? So yeah, yeah, that's.
And that's really what it is. Like if you're in a six hour lecture class, that's pretty standard. Maybe it's broken up into two classes, but then you're studying 12 hours. Like 12 hours actually is. It's kind of reasonable. Right? It's like two hours a day, six days a week. That's, that's pretty much that, that's a good study time. So per week, you're not studying 12 hours per day. Right. Hopefully that's what we're saying. We're saying per week. So there you go. Six hours every Wednesday and Thursday and five hours every Friday. So Kenji, are you breaking up those numbers into clinical and skills lab as well? Because we are only talking about lecture content class. So let's say you have a nursing assessment class. That could be like a skills class. You don't need to spend 12 hours or six hours in your, you know, skills lab practicing your head to toe assessment if you don't need to. Okay, I'm just talking about like sit down. Textbook lecture class. So this would be like your nursing fundamentals class. This is your pharmacology class. This is any med surge, like lecture class that you're taking. This is your like nursing delegation class, all of that. Like, use this as a benchmark. You guys study for two hours outside of class for every hour that you are in lecture class.
Yep. And, and that's a really good point. This is a benchmark. So this is your starting point.
Yep.
You start with that and then you know yourself best. If you're, if you think that that's not quite enough time, you didn't get through quite enough material, then maybe you need a little more. If you find yourself getting bored and feeling that you've already absorbed everything and study all you need, but you have some spare time, maybe you need a little less time. So use this as a base mark and then go from, go from there. Yep. So that is good. Oh, there's someone on TikTok, that was just mentioning that something.
Mentioning something.
I feel, I feel when I study, it doesn't stick. So this goes to. The next part is the study style and really what, what is the, what is the way to study. And I think by this what I'm meaning is that you want to get the part where you're getting the information, consuming it, and then slowly turning it into critical thinking. So critically thinking about your topics or what you're studying so that you're not just memorizing lists of things. So when, when you feel that you're studying, it doesn't stick. Are you talking about just you're trying to memorize all 12 symptoms of this disorder? Well, that, that is something that we want to move past and move more towards critically thinking. That's why we talk about the pathophysiology and all those other topics that you really want to focus on so that you can deduce, you can critically think about the topics so that even if you never studied a disorder, you can still figure out based on pathophysic physiology and kind of what they give you in the question. Critically think about that. So you want to move past simple memorization into being able to critically think about topics.
I'm gonna pull you over. So TikTok, I actually see you.
Hi, TikTok.
When he's talking, you can just see my shoulder moving. We're on Instagram and YouTube as well, so you can see Matthew over there on one of the platforms if you want to. That's right. I'll just call you in.
That's what we're talking about as far as, like it was asked earlier what style of studying, and that's really. It is concept. I guess we've heard this concept based turn is concept based studying really what you want to move towards and really study so that you're learning concepts, not just terms.
We don't want to memorize things. In nursing school, you will not be tested on how well you memorize a list of stuff. This is not how nursing school works, my friends. Not at all. You have to be able to critically think about it. Okay? So you have to move just like what Matthew said. You have to move beyond memorizing a list of signs and symptoms. If you're learning medications, memorizing a list of side effects, that is not what we do around here, okay? You have to understand the why behind it all. You have to understand how things work in the body and then what you're going to do about it as a nurse. Right? Because patients, surprise, surprise, are not textbook cases. So we are learning text like the textbook stuff in nursing school, but then we have to apply it and critically think about it, obviously, to really be able to pass your exams, because your exams are not going to test you on how well you memorize stuff. It's just not how it works. So when you are studying in nursing school, you have to understand the why behind things. So that's why we always use those four categories, right? Pathos, signs and symptoms, nursing assessment and nursing interventions. Goes back to the path of physiology. Alyssa, on TikTok, you have. This is. This is everything. Exactly what you're saying. This is everything. So you said my first lectures are going to be perfusion, functional ability, thermoregulation. Those are some topics you have. Some topics have exemplars. Yes. My question is, should I use the four steps for these things? So, yes, I mean, you have to understand the anatomy and physiology and the path of physiology of perfusion. What happens if perfusion breaks in the body? You have to know that. But your textbook and most likely your lecture class, if you are in fundamentals right now and you have like a lecture class like Alyssa does on perfusion, you know, they're going to go through some basic things that, like, you have to memorize, right? Like how does profusion work and all these things. I want you to be thinking about the pathophysiology and what happens if it breaks?
Okay.
What happens if the perfusion, if your organs are not getting perfused? What is going to happen? You've got to be able to answer these questions. What are you going to assess for? What signs and symptoms are you going to see? Okay, so perfusion is a great example because, well, obviously it's blood flow. So you've got to know, like, what happens if that is not happening in the body? So, you know, cold extremities, you know, obviously blue lips, you know, cyanosis, you've got to know these things. And then how are we going to fix it? Okay, depending on what's going on, what is why that perfusion is breaking down, you have to know what you're going to test for and how you're going to fix it. So, yes, Alyssa, these four things you really want to focus on. For that reason, you're not going to be tested on how well you memorize information about perfusion or about thermoregulation. You're going to be tested on how well you apply that information to a real patient situation. Because when you are in nursing school, you are going to be tested on predominantly case scenario questions. So they're going to give you a case study, they're going to give you a patient scenario, patient situation, and you're going to have to be able to apply what you know to that situation. Kayla, what lab values are you going to look for? What do these lab values mean? What medications would be appropriate for this patient? What are you going to assess for first? What's your initial nursing action going to be? These are the questions you're going to get on your exam. Those are critical thinking questions. So really making that jump from just memorizing, you know, what perfusion is or what thermoregulation is and why does it matter? We're making that leap to now critical, critically thinking about it and connecting the dots between everything. So, Alyssa, I want to mention, if you're not a nursing SS member, I don't think you are. You want to get into the nursing SOS membership community because this is everything that we do in there. So, you guys, if you are starting nursing school in the fall, we have an entire fundamentals course inside the nursing SOS Membership community that does this for you. Like, we literally take these topics, perfusion intake and output, thermoregulation, all the stuff, oxygenation, and we break it down for you step by step and we teach you the critical thinking behind it that you have to know for your exams. So if you are interested, go to nursingschoolofsuccess.com join.

Two weeks.
It will be open in two weeks. So everyone be sure.
Yeah, Kenji, I don't think that's an actual link. So just copy and paste.
Yes.

It's like one of the link tree things or whatever they call it. Yeah, I don't know our link in bio thing.
Yeah.
Click click it and join the waitlist.
All right, so someone's asking on Instagram for back to like studying and how to study. What about students with learning disabilities? I'd say that same things apply.
Yep.
You may need to spend a little bit more time studying as a possibility. It depends on, on what the disability is and where you need additional assistance with. I know some people can get another person taking notes for them maybe. And so that you can, you can get a secondary note.
Talk to your school because they will.
Talk to your school about options. Talk to your friends, people in your class, get together, study group it up.
Absolutely.
Definitely lean on other people. And also lean on the nursing SOS membership community as well.
Yes. Because it is fantastic. Okay, you guys, we do. It's just, it's incredible. So when you join the nursing SOS membership community, not only do you get access to the step by step video lectures that we have for you, so we literally break it down for you. Everything that you're learning in nursing school, you can come home and watch a video on it. Step by step. Like these are, these are not jumbled nursing lectures. When you know, like you go to class and you leave female feeling more confused than when you went in. No, we like break it down for you step by step. And also we have nursing tutors. What? So you can submit a question anytime to our nursing team. If you are confused about anything you learned about in nursing school. Confused about anything, you can submit a tutor form and a nurse on our team will get back to you. Okay. It is fantastic. So not only do you get these step by step, like video nursing lectures that we have for you. The whole database of medications and fundamentals topics, the med search topics, cardiac, renal, respiratory, all the stuff that you're learning about in nursing school, it's inside the nursing. So it's membership community. Pediatrics. The pediatrics course just finished is now live. It's amazing. So not only do you get all of that, but you also get tutoring as well. It is fantastic. So I really, really recommend that you guys jump in.
Our part, our paramedics welcome.
Of course, yes, everyone's welcome. It is, you've got to know though, it is geared toward RN students and LPN students. Nursing students, but if you are in a paramedics program, we've heard paramedics like, well, like nursing techs. Like we've, we've kind of run the gamut of even nurses who are now taking boards to get a certification. In other, you Know, like critical care or we have a critical care course or, you know, certifications and other aspects we do have inside the membership community as well. If you're learning core nursing content, it's for you, it will absolutely help you.
Is recording lecture a good idea?
Absolutely, 100%.
So again, back to the person asking about if what can you do with learning disabilities? That's definitely another option. Talk to your school about it too. But yeah, getting a recording of that, that could definitely be helpful to, to.
Refer back to listening to lectures. If your school allows you to record lectures and listen back to them, that is huge. Especially if you're obviously an auditory learner. Man, I did that for my prereqs, but my nursing program did not allow it for HIPAA reasons. So yeah, okay. Rigoro Marrow. Hello. On Instagram you record lectures. Perfect. That's absolutely. Does it help? It helped me a ton. So I just. It's. That's, that's a huge deal. Hey, on YouTube, everyone watching on YouTube, make sure you subscribe and like this video, okay?
Yes, please like the video on YouTube.
Subscribe to our YouTube channel because obviously.
Obviously. So Steve, congrats.
The reasons are obvious.
Steve, congrats on passing your NCLEX. Awesome. 2 weeks ago so congratulations, Nina. I will answer your question in just a second. Matthew, are you a nurse as well? I will answer that. Let's see.
The answer is.
But we're gonna go back up. Micaiah, hopefully you're still here. You were asking what's Christine's tick tock? We mentioned it a little earlier, but nursing SOS official.
Yes, because someone else.
I know. And also just. Just to answer your question because I know that you've been waiting for it. And quick answer how to answer SATA questions. Select all that apply questions. Kind of tangent tangent over here, but how to answer SATA questions. And I think what you said actually was the. Was the right answer. I answer it like a true false question. So basically, if you have a question that has ABCD options. That's a sad question. Just read it for each. Each option and answer each option if it's true or false. If it's true, then circle it or click it, color it or whatever you want to do. And then if it's. If it's false, don't. And then just reread it for each one and answer each option as a true false question. So. Yep, just want to make sure that we circle back around on that. Nina, am I a nurse? No, I am not. I just kind of pick things Up. I'm more of the techie behind the scenes.
She is the behind the scenes.
I am a nurse, so I'm usually behind the camera except for these lives. If you want to see more of me, let me know in the comments.
I wrote to things you guys, we.
Will see what happens. But right now I am only on lives. So there we go. Oh, Kenji. First day of class on Wednesday. Hooray. Hooray. Be sure to get on the VIP list guys, as we're opening soon.
So yeah, definitely do that, guys. I guess a week and a half now, counting down. Alyssa, you said you sent me the link and I joined would are you going to send me some alert when it's time to join? Yes. So when you get on the VIP list for our nursing SOS membership community, you guys remember the nursing SOS membership community is only open a few times a year. We it's not always open. You can't always get it. You cannot always join. So only opens a few times a year and only for like five days at a time. So when. So you want to make sure that you join that VIP list because I will email you right when it opens. You're going to want to join right when it opens so you don't accidentally miss it. This happens all the time. Nursing students say, oh no, I was on. I was out of town. Or I was, you know, this or that or this. And then they don't join. They forget. And then it's closed. So make sure you join right when it opens. Okay, so mark your calendars A week and a half Sunday. So like not this Sunday, but the next Sunday. What is that? Someone tell me the 22nd. The 22nd.
The 20 something.
Okay, mark the 22nd. Is that I think is the right date, but someone tell me not this Sunday. The Sunday after it will be open. So you will get an email from me if you are on the VIP list. Okay. And you're gonna want to join that day just so you don't miss it.
I have a pro tip for you, Alyssa, also and anyone else so you don't miss it. Add our email address to the con, to your contacts or whatever.
Yes.
Your address book, whatever they call it nowadays.
Whitelisting.
Whitelist it or whatever. I'm gonna add it so that make sure that it doesn't go to other parts of your inbox that you don't check.
Yeah, we don't want things going to spam. Oops, sorry. Tick tock. Did I go away there for a second?
So that is a little Pro tip. Definitely something to to do. Kenji, is there a monthly charge? Yes, it is a monthly subscription or.
Yeah.
And get the annual. So.
Huh.
Yeah.
And we have fun things. Really really want. Okay. Like really, really pay attention to your email inbox. The 21st. Thank you everyone. On Instagram. Everyone's saying it's 21st on Sunday. You guys rock. So the 21st. Mark your calendar. Okay. The Nursing assets membership community is opening on the 21st of August. Woohoo. So make sure that you get on the VIP wait list to join when it opens. So nursing school of success.com forward/join Instagram and TikTok. The link is in my bio.
Okay. We've been talking a lot.
I am losing my voice.
We've been talking a lot about studying and doing concept based studying and critically thinking and to move kind of beyond just rote memorization. Christina's gonna go do something. Someone has a good question. But. And we're gonna get to that. Alexandra, you know who you are. Stick around. Stick around because we have an answer for you. But I'm still talking. So I'm gonna keep talking on what I'm talking about and then we're gonna get to you. So don't worry. Stick around. What I was gonna talk about is actually Stephanie, I'm gonna throw a little wrench in the mix. Little wrench in the mix. Stephanie, you're asking any advice for A and P? A and P is rote.
There you go. ANP is not critical thinking, you guys. ANP is like, look at this skeleton here and name all of the bones.
So unfortunately there are some topics that does require rote memorization as opposed to what we were talking about with critical thinking most of the time. Concept based critical thinking. How things affect other things. There are exceptions to that. ANP unfortunately. Memorization of bones. That will have to be rote memorization. Other examples of that. I just finished the video.
I miss amp Jessica. Me too, girl.
I just finished a video in the membership course about the vaccination schedules.
That was pediatrics.
That's Pediatrics. And that is also more rote memorization. On.
Yeah, you just gotta know ages that.
Certain people need to get certain vaccines. I just did the video. Oh, sorry. The view. I don't know.
You're gonna get us banned.
Whatever. Don't ban us. YouTube.
Thanks.
Okay, thanks, bye. All right, so yes, rote memorization. What to do about rote memorization? Flashcards help a lot. White cards, white. White cards, white boards in repetition of writing, repetition of doing things in various ways. Talking it out loud, teaching it to other people. All those help. But really, it is rote memorization. Chugging through it. Know that this, too shall pass.
So there's all your tips for you.
There's all your. There's all my tips. All right? And I'm going to be. I'm segwaying Alexandra. So cards and flashcards, med cards, etc. Alexandra's asking, what's a good farm book for? Clinicals to look up medications. We do not have a recommendation for a farm book because we don't want to read it. Farm medication cards. Instead, these are our medication cards. They are available from us.
Look how pretty these are. So when you are learning pharmacology, you guys, here's the thing. You. You can't. Yes. Just stop learning medications individually. Okay? You cannot. You. It's just. It's not efficient. When you were learning pharmacology, when you were learning medications in nursing school, you. There. There are literally. So we have a hundred. Over 120 of them in our deck.
I don't think you were showing them to.
We have over 120 of them in our deck. So we have. When you order our flashcards, you get two decks of flashcards. You get our medication cards, the individual ones, and then you get the medication class cards.
There's a lot less of them.
When you learn pharmacology, you have to learn it by pharmacologic class, therapeutic class, group them into class, and we do that for you in the flashcards. So, Alexandra, when we say don't learn from a textbook, I mean, yeah, sure, you can learn from a textbook, but. But it's going to take you way more time to figure out the information that you actually have to know for your exam, doing it yourself. Or you can just let me do the hardware for you and get the flashcards. Because, friends, when you're in nursing school, really the name of the game is figuring out what actually matters. What is the information that you actually have to know to pass your exams? And when you just go to class. Class. When you go to your nursing class and your instructor gives you a laundry list of things to memorize and know, that is not helpful. You really need to be able to focus your study time on what actually matters. So we do that for you in the flashcards. We do it in the membership community. So if you are, you know, confused about anything that you're learning about in school, you know, we teach it to you step by step. I am. Everything about me is step by step. I love giving you step by step processes for how to learn stuff, breaking things down step by step so that you understand it, like actually understand it and can critically think about it. That is everything that we do here. So I do not want you to stay confused or frustrated or overwhelmed or burned out in nursing school. No, no, no. Okay. Please get the help that you need. The flashcards we have available for you, the link is in my bio. The nursing SOS membership community, it's opening in a week and a half on the 20. What did you guys say? 21st. On the 21st. It is opening on the 21st. You're. You are absolutely going to be blown away by how amazing it is and how helpful it is. It's. You're. It's just going to change everything for you.
So those cards are on our shop, which is nursingsos.comshop.
Don'T be confused because we have two websites.
Yeah, we have two websites. Don't be confused.
Don't be confused.
Yeah. Nursingsos.comshop has those cards in them if you would like to take a closer look.
Yep. Because they're awesome, actually. Who was it on Instagram you just said you have the cards and love.
Them and someone just bought it and looking forward to get that. So depending on when you bought that you. Yeah, they're shipped it out.
Yep.
Jessica, let's see. Are the flashcards meds most commonly used?
Yes, absolutely.
Yes, they are. Absolutely.
Yes. Yes.
That would be something, right? That would be really funny if, if like the med cards are only the ones that you'll never use.
You'll never. That's not helpful. That's not helpful at all. These are the ones that you want to be helpful. Absolutely need to.
Not hurtful.
Helpful, not hurtful. And we give you the class cards. So this is how you're really going to want to learn your meds. I mean this is just, this is, this is gold right here. My friends. Pharmacology is difficult. Someone asked me earlier, what is your. Who was that? TikTok. Sorry you guys. I get confused because we're on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. Someone asked me somewhere what the hardest class was for me.
It's a good question.
It is a good question. And I honestly I, I think there, there's pros and cons to every class class in nursing school. I honestly think that just like your first term is so difficult because it's a whole new way of studying and figuring things out and it's all very confusing and new. So there's that aspect. But then there's also less content to know than there is in med Surg. But I personally really liked Med Search, so, like, that's how my brain is wired. I. I really like. That's why I do what I do, right? That's why. That's why I'm here on YouTube and, you know, making these videos for the membership community. Like, this is why I do what I do, because I'm actually really good at it. Really good at med surge and breaking things down for you in a way that makes sense. So I actually really enjoyed med surge. I know everyone says that it's really hard, but it makes sense to me and how my brain is wired. So, Yeah, I don't know. I mean, there's pros and cons to everything. I. I don't tell anybody, you guys. I failed every single skill in nursing school in skills lab, so I remember that every single one of them.
She practiced all of it on me.
I had to take at least a second time because I do not do skills in nursing school. That was like, oh, man. I. Every single skill I had to test off on a second time. Like, I failed at the first time, had to retake it. So that was really tough for me. But I know that there's so many nursing students who are so great at skills but then really stink at lecture. Whereas me, I was the opposite. I'm really good at lecture. Really, like, not good at skills in nursing school. That's funny. Nope, it is.
So everyone's different. Everyone is different for sure. Alexandra. Heard psych was. Is the hardest.
Our psych was not. Was not the hardest. I mean. Yeah, okay, Alexandra, but here's the thing. Psych as well, you focus on those four main categories. Pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, nursing assessment, and nursing interventions. Now, with psych, it gets. You know, it's like, we don't know the patho for a lot of things, but you can at least have an idea of kind of what's going on in the brain. Like, what are the hormones doing and all that stuff. Neurotransmitters, like, how what everything is. What's going on. You know, we kind of maybe 1% know what's going on. So there's patho and then the signs and symptoms. You know, how does schizophrenia manifest? How does bipolar depression manifest? You know, all these things, signs and symptoms, and then nursing assessment, of course. What are you going to do about it? Or what are you going to assess for? And the nursing interventions. What are you going to do about it? Yep.
Yep. Jenny, is asking, where are you guys based? In the US of A.
In the US of A. The good old US of A.
Somewhere between the east and the West Coast.
Somewhere between the east and the west.
With Canada as a hat.
Who's from Canada?
There are some.
Who is on right now from Canada, actually. Where. Where are you guys located now? We probably have a whole new group of people than we have in the beginning.
We always like to do that. And I've been wanting to put right behind us a map or something and start cleaning things up.
I just added this thing, by the.
Way, which is kind of cool for YouTube. So congrats to Matthew.
Congrats to everyone who subscribed to our YouTube channel because be sure to subscrib.
Button and hit the like button because we don't want to take it. I don't want them to take it away.
So I don't. We don't want them to take it away.
Is that what happens if you drop back below? Don't. Don't let that happen. Hit subscribe.
You guys are amazing. Can you believe that we have a hundred thousand? Well, it's like a hundred.
And it's 107 now.
107,000 subscribers.
We're almost 2 million guys. Come on, let's do it.
What amazing. BC. BC. You're Kid Kittian. Am I saying that right? YouTube. I'm from BC. Are we a couple? Yes, we are. We. We are together. We are married. Yes.
That's what happens.
That's what happens. I rope him into things. This is really cool. So that's what we do.
User. Why? All right, I'm going to answer your question.
Oh, yeah.
A lot of people don't have Tik Tok. Oh, no. Is that why?
It's just that they don't have.
Okay, I. I'm not. I'm not a. I don't do the tick tocks. But I'm just.
It's like if you create a default like Gravitar or something. It's just like a number.
User565. Yeah. Okay. All right. It's just a random generated. I keep thinking of Les Miserables when I see you for. I don't know. I'm a musical kind of. Okay, weird. Okay, that was a tangent. If any. Any coupon codes. Okay. As a reward. As a reward for watching all this time.
Are you guys ready for a coupon code?
As long as you promise to keep watching.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah. Hear that? Hear that? So you. Thank you for watching and keep on watching.
Matthew's gonna Drop a coupon code.
I'm gonna drop a coupon code for.
Our flashcards in the. The shop.
So for the shop, if you go in, we actually have two boxes there. There's a farm box that has all of my cards and there's a doscalc box. It's right down there, but.
Right down there.
It's right down there, but we have both those boxes. Take a look. If you type in the nursing code. Nursing code, the coupon code, nursing 10, you'll get 10% off your entire order, whatever that may be. So there you go. Hear that? Nursing 10.
Okay. And then in the dose calc box, I'll just show you right now because it's awesome.
Just do that real quick.
We have conversion flashcards for you. So when you obviously are doing your dose calc exam, you need to make sure that you know your conversions like that is almost number one priority. So we have flashcards that help you with that. All the conversions that you need to know for your dose calc exam in order to pass it are in there now. You guys, seriously, listen up. This is amazing. We have two dose calc workbooks inside the dose calc box for you inside the shop. So the first one is where it's just, you know, written questions for you to go through and then in the back we have the answers written out for how to answer it using dimensional analysis, which is what we always recommend. So we teach you how to pass dose calc, how to get every single question right on your dose calc exam. In this dose calc box, we teach you how to do that. So not only do you get this first workbook with the questions just written out in text and the answers so you can see text there, right? So that's how. How that first workbook is written out, but we have this one where you actually get the med labels as well.
Fun and fancy.
Which is amazing because when you go and take your dose calc exam in nursing school, they are going to test you on both. You have to, you know, answer dose cal questions that are both written like this. And then you also will have to look at real medication labels that they give give you like this and answer questions about them. So in the nose calc box, we teach you how to do both of those things. Super cool.
Alice, Alessandro, Gary, working on ghost calc at the moment, since we get tested soon. So backing up, you're talking about like some of the things that people think are the hardest, hardest classes and whatever. And I'm not sure if it would be considered classified the hardest. But we do get a lot of questions about dose calc because everyone has to go through it.
Yep.
So definitely. Not definitely. If you have some struggles with dose calc and how to do dosage calculation calculations. Dosage calculation calculations, dimensional analysis. Be sure to take a look at that if that'll help. Because it will. Yep.
Absolutely. Tick Tock. You can like this video. Can you like this video on TikTok? If you are on Tick Tock watching like this video, please. Same thing on Instagram. Actually, I don't think that's an actual like super parting things or like Harding it.
Yeah, yeah. Hearts throw up.
The hearts throw things use dimensional analysis and love it. That's exactly how we teach.
Yep.
It's like you watch our YouTube channel all the time.
That is the way to do it for sure. And again, if no one heard nursing 10 coupon code. Nursing 10. 10% off. Knew it.
And the nursing SOS membership community will open on the 21st. Sunday the 21st. You want to make sure that you get on the VIP list. Nursing schoolofsuccess.com join because it is only open for a few times a year and only for like five days at a time or six days at a time. That's it. So it's only open a handful of days a year. So y' all gotta join now when it's open.
Let me see. Going to YouTube. Pinky, what is the best way to study? Take this live. After we're done with our live, go back because like probably the first 20 minutes. 20 plus minutes. We're talking about everything related to studying. It's gold. Go back and take a look at it. For sure. Subscribe and like as well in all the places. Emily, Emeline, Emmaline. Are you guys. Oh, we answered that. Are you guys a couple next gen nclex is going to be hard. No, it's.
Well, we talked about that.
We talked about that Monday.
Sorry, I didn't mean yesterday.
Is it going to be hard study.
For it and it won't be.
It's just gonna be different. And then. Are you both nurses?
You got.
You have some really good questions. Nurse. Not a nurse. Yes, I'm just here.
Hey, Instagram murd17. When is it going to be open to join the community? The 21st. Sunday. So it's Sunday the 21st. That should be a 21st. Y' all told me that it was the 21st, right?
Join the VIP list.
Yeah, the VIP list.
Schoolofsuccess.com yes.
Is in my bio On Instagram. Link is in my bio on Tik Tok. Thank you, Tik Tok, for liking this video. Keep hitting that like button. Tik Tok. I think that helps. I don't know. YouTube. Like this video, please. So hit that like button.
Today is Wednesday.
We are in a new season of AMAs. Our first one was last Monday.
Yes. It's season four of the nursing School Live.
I think we just chose four at random, right?
No, this is actually season four.
Okay. All right.
Nick accounted for us.
Season four. Okay. So we started on Monday again, Emeline, we talked about the ngn, which is kind of funny because it's an acronym of an acronym. I kind of get a kick out of that. But yeah, we talked about the Next generation NCLEX on Monday. So we are going live Mondays and Wednesdays.
Yep.
Same time, same place. Be sure to bookmark it or put it on a calendar or do something with that so that we can see you guys on Monday. Also, I'm going to be scheduling these things out hopefully a little bit further ahead of time on YouTube. So if you have any questions, you can just go over there and go to, like, our scheduled stuff.
Yes.
Wherever that is. And you can actually go in the comments and type in your questions.
Yep. I'm also going to put it in my Instagram story. So I'm going to put a question sticker in my Instagram story. So if you guys have questions that you want us to answer on these lives, go to my Instagram stories and submit your question. I'm gonna post that probably Sunday. I'll do it like a day before we go live. So I'll do it like Sunday for the Monday one and then I'll do it like Tuesday for the Wednesday one. So. Yep, that'll be fun.
Awesome. So if there's any topics that you guys would like to circle back around and talk about more, let us know.
Yes. Merge 17. Can I scroll up? Okay. I'm starting my first semester this fall. So excited to join the community. It's going to help you so, so much. We actually talked a lot about fundamentals here. So I do highly recommend that you go back and watch this video if you have the time, because the membership, I explained earlier on this live how the membership and how critical thinking really works for nursing fundamentals in med search. So I don't think you're going to want to miss that. So, yeah, watch this video. Go back and watch it.
It's just there's some really good stuff.
Today really, really good stuff.
Yep.
Last question. Nah, nad's high on tick tock. Can you help with the next gen NCLEX or new generation nclex? Yes. So here's the deal you guys. I know that when the NGN they announced everything that it's like, you know everything's changing with the nclex, right? We've all heard that everything's changing. I don't want you to freak out, especially if you're a nursing SOS member because how we have always taught in the membership community, it's basically like the NCLEX is catching up to that. We have always talked about critical thinking in the nursing SS membership community. We do not give you a list of things to memorize or figure out yourself. That is not how we do things here. So if you are a nursing SOS member in all the videos you are going to learn the why behind everything and how things connect together. We walk you through the critical thinking, the key critical thinking things that you have to know to pass your exams. And that is now what the NCLEX is even more testing you on. So if you are a nursing SS member, if you have done well with that so far, you are going to do so, so well on the ngn, on the next generation collects, you're going to do awesome.
Jill. I have the old med cards or new ones different also, how do you attack opedes? So just real quickly, they are slightly different, they are bigger, more colorful. And we also included the class cards as well. So not just, just the individual meds, but we actually group them by class for this separate deck right here.
Not only that, but we did add more cards, critical thinking points to these flashcards. So we do have, if you guys see. Actually let me pull this one up for you. We added. So we have a couple things. We have memory tricks in the blue, we have key points in pink and then we have in the yellow little, I don't know if you can see that little light bulb. Those are critical thinking points. So on all the flashcards we have, you know, we have those things so key points that you're absolutely not going to want to forget for your exam, like you absolutely will be tested on this stuff. Those are the key points. And then we have memory tricks to help you remember it. Like you know, just, just helpful, helpful things to help you remember the information and then critical thinking points as well to help you connect it all together. So that is all on the flashcards. The new, the new version two of the flashcards which we just released yeah.
Thank you for getting a version one. Hopefully it's helping. Yes, this will help more so I think too.
So this helps for LPN program too, correct? Yes, correct. On TikTok.
Pinky, when is our next live? So I think we'll end on this. Our next live is this coming Monday at 6:30 Pacific, 9:30 Eastern. Did I do it?
High five. I did it. Time zone.
All right, Cool. I can do math.
All right.
All right.
Yeah.
