TOP TIPS AND TRICKS for studying med surg in nursing school!

Registered nurse Christina Rafano and her husband Matthew teach nursing students how to study medical-surgical content by focusing on what instructors emphasize rather than reading every page. Med-surg exams test critical thinking through case-based questions, not pure memorization, so study habits need to match that reality.

That's a good question.
Because this is like what season five. We can call it maybe five of our live.

Do not. If you. This is your first time. There's a lot of first timers. This is amazing.
Awesome.
So I'm Christina. I am a registered nurse. This is Matthew.
Hello. I am not a registered nurse.
Not a nurse. He is here for the comedic value. And yes, we are married. So unless that would be really, like coincidental that we both got the floor at the same time and weren't like, yeah, we're just we just hang out.
It's cool.
Funny, funny.
Lisa, second time. Awesome.
Yeah.
So we basically are doing this nursing school show where we help you guys through nursing school. So we go through different topics, we have a convo conversation and yeah, I think we're going to jump into Med Surge. Like, I think last week you did some other things. But yeah, we usually focus on one topic at a time and usually cycle through them because everyone needs help.
Actually, real quick, I'm going to mention just a few weeks ago, Matthew and I did a fantastic, fantastic breakdown of the NGN and really the like, what it's going to take to pass that exam. So go back to our YouTube channel, YouTube.com forward/nillings and check that out. We had a whole good live video on the ngm, the new nclex next gen nclex. So that's gonna be really helpful for you.
Yeah.
Yep. So med. So surge.
Let's jump into it. We have a bunch of people in Med Surge.
The first thing that I want to mention about Med Search is that you are going to be thrown a ton of information all at once. Like, it is just, it's. You often hear it called a fire hose. Right? Like, how many of you guys heard that? Fire hose. Right. Like drinking from a fire hose. That is really what it's like. There is going to be so much information thrown at you all at once. And the first thing I want to say about that is that that's okay and you can handle it. Okay. So it's a lot. But the more that you study and the more you go to clinical and see patients with the disorders that you're studying about and all of that stuff, it's all going to come together for you eventually. It's gonna take a while, but eventually you're gonna get to this day where it's like, oh, wow, mind blown. I actually kind of am starting to understand this now. Everyone has that moment and it does. Yeah. Liza, thank you. Yes. It connects. I know we're talking about that. It's just you will get to this day where it's like, oh, light bulb, you know. Okay. I actually do know something. You know, it's not going to be like this, like newbie forever. You know, you're not going to feel overwhelmed or totally lost forever. It will eventually click. Okay. Yeah. Lies in that aha moment. Right? That's exactly right. Someone asked, what exactly is Med Search? And that's a great question. If you are in nursing fundamentals right now or if you just haven't Done your med surg rotation yet? Med surg is kind of a catch all phrase, Medical, surgical. So you on a med surg floor, you could have everything from. Well, Lauren, that's a great example. Diabetes. You can have everything from like diabetes, diabetic, ketoacidosis, to like a hip surgery, a surgical. Right. Brain surgery, neurological stuff, you know, heart failure, copd, respiratory illnesses, all of that stuff. Med surge really is kind of this catch all phrase of, you know, medical issues, surgical issues. So you will learn in your med surg class, anything from. Well, Liza, there you go again. Oncology, Great one. You'll learn oncology, you will learn cardiac, you will learn respiratory, you will learn renal, you will learn gi, you will learn neuro, musculoskeletal, all of the systems, you will learn all of it. Hematology, oncology, immunology, all of the ologies. Friends, it is really, it is really a fire hose. So here's a really big, big, big important tip to keep in mind. When you are studying med surg. You have to make sure that you are focusing on the things that matter and you're not wasting time studying the things that don't. Now I know that this can be a very difficult thing to figure out how to do in nursing school, but it really, really starts. Start with making sure that you are studying the things that your instructors talk about in class. So you don't want to be wasting time studying the textbook just for the sake of studying the textbook. Like don't read the textbook just because your instructor told you to read the textbook. Not helpful for you. I mean, your textbooks are huge. We have a bunch of them back there. Like, do you see like all the textbooks back like everywhere in this bookshelf? So many of them. They are massive. They're huge. It would take you years to read all of them and to understand all of them, to critically think through all of them. That's not going to happen in one 16 week or 10 week term. Right? So you really have to make sure that we are, you know, you want to study smarter, not harder. You've heard that phrase before. You really have to make sure that you are studying the right things, focusing on the right things and not wasting time on things that don't matter, the things that you're not going to be tested on. So I always recommend that you focus on studying the things that your instructors talk about in class. Now we have a lot of nursing SS members on here. Thank you guys so much for popping over to our YouTube channel because we we just got off our coffee chat. We have a insider membership community. We have a coffee chat every Monday. Well, and tonight's was actually super fun. Oh cool. Later. It was awesome. And so friends, if you are a nursing SS member, you have the glorious advantage of having all the videos, the breakdown videos, step by step videos that I walk you through everything you need to know about med search for nursing school. So if you're a nursing SS member, do not forget that you have access to, to our entire video database where I literally walk you through step by step, everything you need to know to pass your med surg exams. When you get to, you know, when you start getting into your textbooks and reading your textbooks, you're going to notice that there's a ton of information that you are never, ever, ever going to be tested on. It's just, it's just how it is. Right? The textbook is a catch all and they cannot possibly test you on all of that. So inside the membership community, we have it all laid out for you in step by step videos so that you don't have to figure it out yourself. Like that is not helpful for you, right? You should not have to be left to figure everything out yourself in nursing school. Not helpful. So that's why we do that. Lisa, you said I love all the videos and study guides. Yes, the study guides. I should have mentioned those. You know, Lisa, as you know we have the study guides for you as well inside the nursing SS membership community. So you have the videos and then you have a study guide to go with it. So you could just put, print those out, take it to class, you know, as a refresher, take it to clinical, whatever you want to do. So helpful. So you guys, you cannot like you genuinely. I know, I know it sounds so counterintuitive, but you cannot try to memorize everything in nursing school. That is not going to help you. It's just that you are going to set yourself up actually for failure on your exam because you are not going to be focusing on studying the right things, the things that they're actually going to test you on. If you are just studying things that don't matter, right. Then you're not actually spending time studying the things that actually matter, the things you're actually going to be tested on. Don't waste your time. That's not helpful for you. Yep. Yeah.
I mean like we keep hearing that. Right? Just, yeah. How to study more efficiently and more effectively. So yeah, we don't want you to get caught in the weeds and studying the things that Won't be in your tests. And, yeah, again, it goes back to the learning from a fire hose or nozzle or just so much information that you get overwhelmed and lost. We don't want you to be lost. We want to be able to get you the things that you need to know.
Yes.
And learn the things that you need to know. And then when you take a step back, you'll actually realize, hey, I actually know what they're talking about. And I can go into my tests with. With the confidence of knowing what you need to know instead of just saying, hey, I just studied the book and I memorized what I could. But I don't really know if this is helpful. We don't want that to happen, because.
That is not going to bolt. Lies that. You just had a really good point on YouTube. You have to understand it, not memorize it. And that's exactly right. This is huge for med surge, guys. Okay, so who, again, is in med surge? Raise your hand. Like, put up your favorite emoji or whatever if you are.
Favorite emojis.
Yeah. Favorite emojis. My favorite emoji right now, I think is currently the turtle.
The turtle's a good one.
The turtle is good.
You guys want to pop up a turtle?
Pop up a turtle. Or your favorite emoji. Unicorn, spine, tickets to. But that is a huge, huge deal. When you're in fundamentals, like, you can memorize some things, but when you are in med surge, you. You just can't. You cannot spend your time memorizing stuff because your exams. Right. They are not going to test you on how well you memorize stuff. Lisa, is that a cat in a box emoji?
I also like the donut donut emoji.
Thank you for my turtle, Liza. I love it. Is that a fairy? I love that. Wow. You guys find some cool emojis.
Oh, a YouTube emoji.
A YouTube emoji. I didn't even know that was a thing. I did not know a cat in a box was an emoji. That is pretty cool. Um, your exams, you guys. So a lot of. A lot of you guys are in med search or have done med surg already. Like, when was the last time they tested you on how well you memorize a bunch of stuff? Like, they don't do that, right? Your exams in nursing school are not going to test on how well you memorize things. That is just not how it works. They're going to test you on how well you understand the information and how well you critically think about it. So really, what they're going to do is give you a case scenario question, like a patient situation, right? They're going to ask you critical thinking questions about it. Like, okay, what would be your first initial action, your, you know, initial response? What is the first thing you'll do? Or you'll get a select all that apply question that says, based on this patient's scenario, what possible signs and symptoms do you think you might see? Or what, you know, nursing intervention would. Would work for this patient. You know, these are all critical thinking questions. These are not memorizing questions. So let's say you get a question on your nursing school exam that's like a select all that apply, asking you about the signs and symptoms you might see with a patient. Well, you could have memorized a list of signs and symptoms for that particular disorder, but what happens if they throw you some different ones that were not on the list that you memorized, but they still might be correct? You actually have to critically think, okay? So you have to think like, okay, if I have a patient with diabetes or if I have a patient with heart failure or stroke, these are the signs and symptoms that I could expect to see. Because I know what a stroke is or I know what heart failure diabetes are. You have to be able to make that leap in med surge away from memorization to critical thinking. So, you guys, I know we have a lot of nursing assets members on. So just as a reminder for you, okay, so inside the videos, inside the nursing assessment membership community, we break these disorders down. All the med search stuff, we break it all down for you step by step. But also we give you the critical thinking tips that you need to know for those disorders. Like, we give you the critical thinking points that you have to know for your exam. So we connect the dots for you. Like, okay, why does this matter for heart failure? Like, why do we. Why do these signs and symptoms happen? Why do we do these nursing assessments? Why do we do the nursing interventions? We don't just give you lists of stuff to memorize because that is not helpful for you. So actually, inside the nursing membership community, we do this critical thinking part for you. So we break it all down for you. So I know we have a lot of members on. So if you guys are at all confused with what you're learning in class, like, just remember you have access to those videos. Okay? So download the study guide like you said before. Thank you, Lisa. Download the study guide. Watch the videos inside the nursing office membership community. Just let me walk you through it. You guys. You don't have to figure it out yourself in nursing school. I don't think that's an appropriate thing to do. You know, you should not be left to have to figure it out yourself. That is why we are here. We're here to walk you through it. So critical thinking is everything. Like that is the name of the game. Like the name of the game. Do we help with teas? No teas exam. Definitely. Check out on Instagram. Can you Kate at pre nursingsmarter. She is over on Instagram at Pre Nursing Smarter. Hello. I have much appreciation for all that you guys do. Thank you so much. I know you guys. I missed a bunch of comments. I'm sorry, I'm scrolling. So what is the hardest part for you so far in med search? Um, osteoporosis. Another one you learn about in med surge. Yeah, what. What is the hardest part for you in med surgery right now? Like, what is the hardest part of med surg? Or if you've graduated on from med surge, what was the hardest part? Oh, Alan, you put OB in with med surge. I don't usually do that. Like, OB and med surg are actually typically two different, like, classes. But ob opi. Alan, I'm with you. Not my thing.
Oh, Sarah. Figuring out topics to review.
Hi, Sarah. Glad to see you.
Integumentary system.
Yeah. Where to start? Maternity has been a disaster. Oh, yeah.
See?
Yeah. See lnd. Yeah, those. Those. The. The. I think oftentimes the hardest part are the ones that we're not interested in. Right, Sarah? Right. So you might not be. Are you, like, not interested in being a, you know, LND maternity nurse? Probably not. I would imagine that was the case for me. I did not like ob. Same thing.
Alan, I feel there's not many resources to explain maternity.
Oh, yeah. And. And I just. It's. Yeah. I don't know. That was never really my thing, so I was not super invested, I guess, in it. I really liked. I love all the cardiac stuff and everything. So in med surg, you know, respiratory, renal, gi, cardiac. I mean, all of it, the whole gamut. But I really liked the. The cardiac stuff. That was always fun. What I like. Do you help out with pharmacology? Yeah, of course we do. You guys, was it last week that we talked about Farm?
Farm was last week.
Was that last week?
Yep.
Okay, well, that was pharmacology last week, so definitely check out that live.
Yeah. So all our lives are on. Probably the easiest way to find it is on YouTube, where we always go live afterwards. It's available There. So you can just go back to our channel, YouTube.com nursingsos and all our videos and all our lives are there, FYI. Also, we had a video that we just posted today, how to Pass Fundamentals, which goes a lot along with what we're talking about right now, actually. So Christina actually goes into critical thinking and the DRC model, which we model out for you guys on. On how to get better at critical thinking and following a. A kind of methodology. So it makes everything easier and step by step, which is great. So, yeah.
Is that the one for today or was it does calc.
Oh, today was. No, just kidding.
Ooh, is next week fundamentals?
No. Two weeks from now.
Oh, see, Matthew's already editing that.
Right, I'm editing. Sorry.
That's what's happening. Today was Dose Calc.
Today was Dose Calc and How to Read Med Labels.
Yes. How to read Med Labels.
Sorry about that.
We have free, free lectures. Yes. All over our YouTube channel. So go to YouTube.com forward/nitnessing SOS. Yes. A Bloom for Jesus. Give me all the maternity. Yeah. See, we all have our strengths and weaknesses, right?
So, Sandra, how do we know exactly what we need and what we don't?
Yeah. So that is really the name of the game in nursing school. So, Sandra, I'm going to direct you. Oh, well, okay. First off, are you inside the nursing house assistant membership community, Sandra? Because if you are, my answer is going to be different than the answer I will give you if you aren't. I'm going to assume that you are not inside the community because I. Is this your first time on our YouTube live? This might be your first time. So, Sandra, if you are not inside our community, here's what I recommend that you do. Look at what your instructor gives you for your class for Med Surge, right? You will get numerous things. You will get for sure, modules and a syllabus. So your, your instructor, your school creates these modules or a syllabus of, like, these are the things that you need to learn in order to pass this class. Like, these are the. The competencies, right? The things you need to know in order to pass this class. Start there, okay? And then as you go through your classes, your lecture classes, focus on what your instructor is teaching on, like lecturing on in the class. And then study that. Do not just read every single thing in the book, because that is not going to be helpful for you friends. I'm going to say it so many times. I know. You cannot spend all of your time reading just for the sake of reading because it's not going to help you. So in order to figure out what you need to know and what you don't, the things that you do need to know is what your instructors lecture on in class. The things that you don't. Is everything. Just make it easy. Let's make it easy. Top. Top Taste. Hello. So true. Yes, it is. Really. And this is where so many nursing students get so stuck, is that we try to know everything about everything about everything. Michelle. Yes. The book can be so overwhelming. Yes, it can be. And I know it's just part of our really, like, I don't know so many nurses. Right. We're just like this type A. Right. That's kind of the person, the general personality of a nurse. Right. Is like this type A personality where we want to know everything about everything about everything. And friends, that's just simply not true. Like, you cannot know everything about everything. And that's okay. Like in nursing school, you're not expected to, even though it feels like it. I know it feels like your instructors want you to know everything.
And they might even say that, oh, just. Just read the book or just learn everything. But really. Yeah. You want to focus on what's being lectured on what, what your professors are focusing on, because they're focusing on the things that you do need to know.
Yes.
So, yeah.
TJ Marisol. Hello. On Instagram, do you sell modules or notes? So we have our nursing us membership community where we take it actually 100 steps further. We don't just give you notes to memorize. That is absolutely not what we do. We actually literally walk you through step by step in videos, what you need to know to pass your exams. Not only that, but we give you the step study guides that go along with it so you know exactly what to study. You're not wasting your time on things that don't matter. We give you the key points for what you need to know. Like, these are the absolute things you've got to know for your exam because you will be tested on these things. We give you the critical thinking points. So we basically do the critical thinking for you, which is amazing. So if you are confused about how things fit together and you know how, you know how disorders interact or, you know, signs and symptoms or nursing assessments. Why do we do all these things? We walk you through all that so you don't get to your exam. Super confused about how it all fits together. We actually walk you through it. Also, inside our Nursing Essence membership community, we do tutoring. So if you have a question, if you are a nursing U.S. member. You have a question, you can submit a tutor form. We have a form up on our site where you submit your question and a nurse on our team will get back to you with a step by step answer. It is amazing. So if you are, you know, really wanting to be the best nurse that you can possibly be, if you want to know how to study in nursing school, if you want us to hold your hand through nursing school, that is really the place to be. Yes, yes. Yes. We talked about pharmacology last week. This. I'm trying to remember what everyone said last week. You guys, the. So from A week from now, for the next live, I think we should talk about fundamentals. Or do you want to talk about the NCLEX? Those are my two options.
And like I said, there's a YouTube video coming out in a couple weeks about fundamentals too. So if you're interested in fundamentals anyway, go ahead and subscribe on YouTube or hit like and all the things.
Yes.
So you definitely don't want to mix.
Yeah.
Miss that.
Fundamentals or in class. What do you guys want to talk about?
Funds.
Yeah, Funds is not fun. It can definitely not be fun.
Liza. Nclex. There were a couple people that were asking about engine.
Yeah, Fundamentals. Fundamentals. Well, fundamentals. Okay, let's talk about fundamentals next week, you guys, and then maybe the week after we can do nclex. Does that sound good?
Sure.
Yeah, that's good, I think. Is that Thanksgiving week?
Yeah.
Oh, boy.
So, yeah, we'll figure it out.
Will you be around Thanksgiving week? Should we still go live? Do you want to hang out with us on the Monday before Thanksgiving?
Oh, I just ended a term in fundamentals and it was. It wasn't hard, but a lot.
Yeah, it's a lot.
Yeah.
Yeah. You have to know a lot of stuff.
Hassi Fundamentals.
Yes. Yep. We can totally do Hussey fundamentals. My school used he for the. What do you call it? Like capstone. I saw like capstone, but like the final. We did the exit Hussey. Martha Joe's. Yes. Okay. Okay. Everyone's saying that you'll be around Thanksgiving week. So should we go live on Thanksgiving week? Can we do two lives next week? I'm glad you guys want us to be live more. That sounds fun.
Yeah. Previous seasons, we have done multiple times a week. This season's, with everything else going on, we're dropping it down to Mondays. So we'll stick with Mondays for now.
But maybe, maybe we will do maybe.
More at some point.
Yeah.
Later on down the line. So, yeah, if you guys like that, go ahead and hit like and subscribe too.
Yes. Make sure you like this video on YouTube and on Instagram. You guys know all about those algorithms and everything. They like it when you like it.
Yes. Show the algorithm that you watch.
Yes. Tell YouTube that you like us so that YouTube likes us. That's how it works. Yes, friends. Okay, so we will be back next week. Let's talk about fundamentals next week. And then the week after we will be on with nclex. I think that sounds good. Okay, that sounds like a good place. That'll be Thanksgiving week and wow. Exciting. All right, you guys, we will see you. Thank you so much for hanging out with us. We'll see you next week.
All right, talk to you guys later.
Bye.
Bye. YouTube. I like them. Oh, very good.
Thank you.
