Strategic planning: Prepare, Create, & Deploy Your Strategy

A guide to the three phases of strategic planning: preparing your mission and vision, creating strategy maps and objectives, and deploying and evaluating the plan. The video walks through each step and mentions Clearpoint Strategy as a tool for tracking execution.
You've just come across one of our great articles on strategic planning. What's a strategic plan? It's a vision of where you want to be in five years and a roadmap for how you're going to get there. There are three major steps in building that strategic plan. The first one is preparation. Make sure you have all of the pieces you in place ready to go. Gather your team together. Create a timeline. Then what are the inputs we need? How do we look both within our organization and outside of our organization? STEP 2 Creating your strategic plan. So start with your mission and vision statements. Do you have one? Are they up to date? Let's go through and think about an OAS statement. Right? What's your objective? What's your advantage? What's your scope? Then let's define our strategic shifts. So where are we today and where are we trying to go across various aspects of our overall strategy? The next thing you need to do of course is define your objectives. Define those measures. Define the projects as well. Create a strategy map. Set your targets. Start out there at five years and work your way back to today. Make sure your targets all mapped together so that you'll have a great plan that you and your team can execute. We're on to step three. This is putting your strategic plan in place and making sure you're executing on it. Have a kickoff meeting. Make sure you do a lot of communication across your organization seven times seven ways. Then you want to start evaluating your strategy. You start having quarterly reporting meetings, looking at your results of your objectives, measures and projects, how they all link together. Are we on track? One of the key ways to get buy in from other leaders in your organization is to think about how this plan is going to benefit them. Because when you do that, when you show them that their alignment to the plan will help them gather resources or help them execute on their pet projects. This is going to help them buy into the plan and want to see it succeed and get everyone together rowing in the right direction. As you get into strategic planning, you'll probably realize you need some extra tools to manage that plan. Clearpoint Strategy is built to be able to track your objectives, your measures, your projects all in one place and allow you to do that reporting on a regular basis.
