But make sure if you're new that you go ahead and do that. And I always tell you guys my Instagram at Vision Driven Basketball, you have any questions for me, send me a message on there. I reply to everybody. And you know, today is. And I always talk about this, but you know, I always, basically every podcast I do comes from questions that I get. It's a great way for me to be able to interact with you guys and be able to kind of answer questions that might not be easy to answer over like a dm, right? So this is one of those questions and really it's just one of those topics that is, that requires a little bit more of an explanation. But I always appreciate getting those questions. So again, you have anything for me, go ahead and do that. So we'll hop right into today, and today's topic is essentially, I want to break down for you guys, step by step, how to get better, how to put together a plan that's going to help you to get better. Okay? And what I mean by that is we're gonna go from zero from nothing. We're gonna put together. I'm gonna not just gonna teach you guys, you know, here's this, like, just do this, right? I'm gonna teach you guys like the actual why we're, why we're doing what we do, okay? So how you can actually take the things you need to work on and build them into your own plan and then build workouts around those things so you can improve in those areas that you need to focus on, okay? Because, you know, essentially they talk about, you know, you give a man a fish, he can eat for a day, teach a man to fish, he can eat for a lifetime. That's exactly what I'm talking about today. Okay? So breaking down how you can actually put together your own plans so that you're gonna be able to see that improvement as well. So I get messages every day from players who are struggling just knowing what to do. Okay. It's a very, very common question where, you know, I'll get messages, they'll say, hey, you know, coach. You know, I actually got a message that it was like, coach, I'm tired of being trash. Like, I struggle with this and this, this. And she's like, players who come really frustrated, or they might say, you know, coach, I feel like I'm not seeing the improvement that I wish I could be. I feel like, you know, I'm just not really sure what I should be doing. I don't know if this is the right thing to do or that's the right thing to do. And so I want to kind of answer some of those questions today and kind of help you guys to be able to think this through a little bit more. But the one thing I'll say, just kind of a caveat, is that a lot of it is, you know, I'm going to give you guys my own process today. First of all, my process is not the only one, okay? There are other methods out there. There are other people who might have different opinions than me, and they might be just as good or even better than mine. Okay, that's fine. I'm not going to sit here and say that this is the only way you can do it. This is my own personal way that I would. That I would recommend for you guys to do things. And so that's just the first caveat. And I've seen it. I've seen this work with. With myself, with players that I work with, being able to kind of structure things out in this way. And of course, this is how when I go through my programs, you know, the permanent score system and elite ball handling, those are a little bit different because those are more. A little bit more tailored, focused to certain things. So it's going to be a little bit different than this, but the kind of format is similar in terms of finding things to work on. And we'll hop into that more as we get going. But I just wanted to kind of give you that off the bat. And the second thing to think about before we get into this too, is that, you know, a lot of. A lot of this is experience based. Okay? So a lot of what I'm telling you is stuff that I just learned from doing it okay through while I was growing up, while I've been able to kind of work with players online, work with players in person, and be able to see what works, what doesn't work, what works better than this. You know, why does this work? Why does that not work? And you, you know, like I said, that's not the end all, be all. But also understand there's an experience factor to it, okay? So a lot of times players will get stuck, you know, analysis, paralysis, what it's called, where you just want to overanalyze what you're doing. Like, is this perfect? Is that perfect? Is this perfect? Is that perfect? Like, don't worry about things being perfect. Get things set up that are. And make it good enough, okay? Get a plan that's good and. And follow it, okay? And if you feel like you need to change things up, then do that. But you're not going to know that until you actually have the experience. So stop trying to make things perfect. Once you have a plan, you have something that's set, do it. If it needs to be adjusted, that's fine, okay? No harm, no foul. But make sure, get your plan down, start going. And then as things need to move and as things need to change, you have the freedom to do that. Okay? So that's off the bat before we get into this, but, you know, some players will come to me and they'll have a certain problem, like with a certain skill, you know, maybe shooting, finishing, ball handling, whatever. Like, they might have an area that they need to really work on or maybe multiple areas more than likely. And a lot of times players just don't know how to even get started doing that. Like, how often should I work out? How long should my workouts be? What workout should I do? All those things, right? And that's what I want to talk about today. You know, I want to lay out the process for you step by step from determining what actually you need to work on, determining how you're going to work on it, determine what you're going to actually do, and then actually carrying it out and then being able to evaluate, make adjustments to it, okay? That's what I want to get to in this video. So overall, I want to make this as simple as possible, okay? I want this to be something that you can. You can listen to, you can write your stuff down, and then you can literally follow it, like, as soon as you're done, okay, you're going to have. There's some research you can do, but also you're going to have the outline of what you need to do. And that itself can carry you and take you very, very far if you follow that through. And obviously we can make things more complicated, more difficult, and there's times where that's going to happen again. With some of my programs, things are a little bit more difficult than just this. They're a little more complex than just this. But this is something that if you're trying to get going again, it doesn't have to be perfect. But this is a great plan for you to follow and start to see results, start to get better. And I know that's a big struggle for a lot of players. So let's get into it. You know, when we first talk about a skill development plan, right? Skill development program, the first thing you need to do is you need to realize and figure out what you actually should be working on, okay? What areas you should be prioritizing, okay? That's what you need to think about. What are your priorities? All right? Because listen, you might think you need to get better at everything, and maybe you do. In fact, you probably do because everyone really has room to improve in every area, okay? So you probably need to get better at just about everything. But trying to do everything at once is not going to help you because you're not going to get very much better at any one area, okay? So when you get into a game and you want to be able to rely on a couple things, you know, whenever you need them, you're not going to do that because you're going to be, you know, average at everything, okay? And if you're not good at anything, then it's going to be hard for you to make an impact. You know, they talk about in the NFL, right? If you have, you know, if you have two starting quarterbacks, you don't have any starting quarterbacks, okay? What that means is that if you don't have a guy who is great and there's a competition where, like, oh, you know, we have. We have two guys who could start. Well, then you have nobody who could start because you don't have a guy who's like, great, right? Who separates himself, okay? You'd rather have that one guy than two guys who are. Okay? Because now it's like, we don't have any quarterbacks, okay? We don't have any guy who's going to really separate himself, okay? That's the case when we talk about this right here. The bottom line is that it's better to be really, really good at one or two things then pretty good at everything, okay? It's better to do that because without getting too far into it, basically, you know, when you're playing, there needs to be some certain role that you can fill. If you want to consistently get playing time, you want to consistently see results on the floor, There needs to be something that, a role that you can fill. That might mean that you're an outside shooter. So you know, your job is to shoot the ball in your open. Okay, you might be a great ball handler, so you're, you're. You're the point guard. Your job is to handle the basketball. Okay? You might be a great ball handler and a great defender, so you're going to, you're going to handle the ball. You're also going to play great defense on the team's best player. You might be, you know, a great defender, great shooter, so you can be a three and D guy. Those are examples of roles that you can fill. Okay? Now, there are some players who are great at everything, okay? But that's not what we're talking about right now. We're talking about developing your skills to a level where, you know, if it's a situation where, like, you want to hit some weaknesses and get them up to your strengths, then that's one thing as well. But we're talking about, you know, focusing on one or two things. You can become great at them. And then if you want to switch things up and do something else, that's fine. Okay? But I'm saying is focusing on. And we'll talk about it, but focusing on just a few areas at once is going to be the route you're going to want to take. Okay? You're not going to want to try and do every single thing at one time. Because again, we want to have that focus so that we can get those areas as great as we possibly can. So that when games come and it's full speed and there's defense out there, you can actually go out there and perform and do those things you practiced. Okay? We don't want to just try and do everything. We want to be focused on what we're doing so that we actually see improvement in those areas. Okay? So what you're going to want to do is you're going to want to choose up to three or four areas or three or four skills that you want to focus on. Probably three, though. Okay, Maybe four, but probably three. And these can be any sort of combination of your strengths and weaknesses, like I said. So, you know, you might be a great shooter. That's your role. So you want to continue to do a lot of shooting because you want to be as great at that as you possibly can. That's how you get on the floor, that's your role. You want to excel at that. So you work on a ton of, you know, we'll say, you know, three point shooting, and then maybe you want to work on two weaknesses. Maybe your weakness is ball handling and finishing. Okay, that's just an example for you. So those are the three things that you're targeted on. Maybe you want to go even more specific. Maybe you're a really good catch and shoot player, but off the dribble, you're not great. So you're going to. You want to keep on working on your catch and shoot, but also you want to add in, you know, shooting off the dribble, and then maybe you're not a great ball handler. So those are two weaknesses. Those are your three things that you're focused on your strength, which is catching and shooting, and then your two weaknesses, which is shooting off the dribble, ball handling. And we can get even more specific with that. Again, I don't want to make this too complicated, but again, those are kind of things off the bat you can focus on. And really it's up to you with those areas. There's no wrong area to work on. Okay. If you feel like this is something that I need to get better at. Right. Even if it's a smaller area, that's fine. That can be one of your areas as well. Okay. So that's something that you need to be honest with yourself. And honestly, it can start off with the question, like, what do I need to do to play next year? What do I need to do to excel on the court on my team next year? What skills do I need to have? And then narrow that down to the three most important things and work on those things. Okay. That's really how simple it is. And we'll get a little bit more into that as we continue to go on. But, you know, there's a ton of stuff when we talk about, you know, okay, so we have our areas, right? You know, you have your three areas that you want to work on. Okay. Now we need to figure out what are we actually going to do? Like what workouts, what drills are we going to do that actually going to target those areas. Okay. And this is where you're going to do some research. Okay. So obviously there's a ton of stuff out there on the Internet that. A ton of drills out there. Okay. This, this, this specific podcast isn't going to be about drills. This is just going to be about the outline. So it's going to give you all the Tools to go, take this and then, you know, apply that and then see the results. What you need to do is, is find things that are going to target those areas. So, for example, right, you want to work on shooting. Okay, we'll say all around shooting, you want to shooting out the cash, dribble, whatever it might be. There are plenty of workouts online you can find that are going to target that. Okay. If your focus is ball handling, plenty of stuff online, plenty of drills, plenty of workouts you can find that's going to do that. YouTube, just Google, like, you'll find a ton of stuff on there. Again, some of it's really, really good stuff too. And I've talked about it before. You know, a lot of guys that I follow put out a lot of great stuff and obviously I have a lot of stuff on my channel. Shooting, ball handling, finishing, all the player workouts, different types of scoring workouts, the jab workout, different things in that sort of realm. So again, a lot of stuff you can check out online and then also, you know, but that's kind of the thing that you run the risk with online. You're gonna have some great stuff and you're gonna have some not so great stuff. Okay. So kind of an experience thing. You're gonna find out what works and you're gonna find out what doesn't work. Okay? So again, do not fall into the analysis, you know, paralysis by analysis where you just like, oh, I don't know if this is better or that's better, this is better or that. Like, just do it. Figure out if it works. If it doesn't, switch it up. If it does work, great, keep doing that. Okay. Don't try and make everything perfect. It doesn't have to be perfect. Just. Just do it. And then once, you know, once you have the experience, then you can determine if you want to change things. Okay, Just. But. But get to doing it. And you know, there are also programs out there you can use. So obviously, you know, my own programs, the perimeter score system, lead ball handling, all this stuff is laid out already for you on that. And there's a lot of other programs out there that I'm sure are great as well. A lot of stuff that I've used that are great. But again, you run the risk of there's some great stuff and some not great stuff. So again, you want to be careful with what you go with. But at the end of the day, there has never been a better time to need to find stuff online. There's so much stuff on the Internet, you can find YouTube, Google. There's so much stuff, right? And there's so many great drills out there, great workouts that you'll be able to use that are gonna help you to get better. So there's really no excuse for not knowing what to do. Okay? If you don't know what to do, it's probably because you haven't done enough research. And if you have, then the reason is probably because you haven't actually gone and tried enough stuff. You don't have enough experience to know what works and what doesn't. And that really comes through doing it, right? You can sit and you can listen to my podcast all day. You can watch all the basketball videos you want to. If you don't actually go out and do it, you're not going to know what works, okay? So go out and do it. Stop trying to stop. Stop sitting around and wondering about whether or not it's going to work. Okay? Do it. So we've covered picking those areas, we covered finding workouts and drills that are going to help you with those areas specifically. Okay, now let's talk about what those workouts actually look like. So what I would recommend is, is between three to five, three to six workouts a week, probably somewhere around four to six workouts per week. So your schedule might be, you know, let's say you're going to go Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, you take Sunday off. That's an example of what you could do. Maybe you do five days, maybe you do Monday through Friday. Okay, maybe you do Monday, Tuesday, you know, Thursday, Friday. Maybe those are your days. Whatever, that's, that's up to you and your schedule. Okay? You have to figure that out for yourself. But those are all options for you, okay? So figure out how many days are gonna work for you. They wanna recommend is, so you know, you have those six days a week you're working out, develop four workouts. Okay? So as you're doing your research, finding out what drills to do, what drills are gonna target those things, build four workouts that are gonna target those things. So maybe let's say your three skills you wanna target. Are you shooting off, you know, we'll say three point shooting, shooting off the dribble and ball handling. Okay? So maybe you're going to have one workout that's all shooting, all three point shooting. Okay, maybe, maybe that's one of your workouts. Maybe another workout is some, a little bit three point shooting, but a lot of shooting off the dribble. And maybe you have a workout that's combined with some ball handling and some shooting. Maybe you have a just ball handling workout. That's four right there. Okay. Now another question I get all the time is like, hey, coach, should my workout just be ball handling and just be shooting and just be finishing and just be this? Just be that? It can be. But also, you can mix skills and workouts too. You can have a workout that hits your shooting and your ball handling. That's fine. Okay. For me, like a lot of players want to think that there's one right answer. There's not one right answer to it. There's. There's multiple avenues you can take. Right. If I'm working out with a player, we're usually going to hit multiple skills in a workout, usually. But there might be a day where it's just gonna be heavy shooting or heavy ball handling. Okay. So it's honestly good to have a mix of those things. So maybe two of your workouts are focused on just one skill strictly, and your other two are kind of a mix of all those. Okay. What I would recommend is that each workout would last between, you know, an hour to two hours max. Okay. Because what you want to be able to do is make sure that your workouts are that you're able to go at 100% for your entire workout. Okay? You don't want it to be a situation where you're working out for four or five hours straight, but by the time you get past an hour and a half, you're only going at 80%. You get to three hours, you're going at 60%. You don't play at 60% in games. So if you train at 60%, it's a waste of your own time. Okay? Three hour, four hour, five hour workouts are a waste of time. They are. And a lot of players will say, well, Kobe did this, Kobe did that. We're not talking about Kobe here, okay? Kobe is a completely. Kobe is the exception, not the rule. Okay? Kobe is the exception. Kobe is a professional athlete who built up that ability over years and years and years and years and years and years. Also with, you know, elite level nutrition, elite level athletic trainers, elite level recovery. You know, all these things that make him that allow him to play at an elite level that 99.999% of players do not have access to. Okay? So don't try and think that because an NBA player does this that you should do that too. That's not how things work, okay? You have to actually evaluate and think what is actually the most effective, most Efficient way of doing things. Okay? So that's one of my recommendation for you, is that your workouts last no longer than two hours, okay? Because that way you're going to know that you can go 100% the entire time. You can go game speed the entire time, so that when you get to the games, you've already been practicing at that same speed. Okay? The speed isn't an issue for you because you've been already doing it. Okay? So you're ready to execute those skills when you. When you need them, which is going 100% during games. Okay? So cover that build between probably. Probably four or five workouts. Okay. Each last about an hour. And those can target multiple skills if you want, or one skill. I would recommend kind of a combination. Okay? If you have four workouts that you built, two of them are mix, two of them are one singular skill, three of them are mix, one of them is one single skill. It's really up to you, okay? There is no one right answer for you, how you have to do things. But those are just my recommendations, my guidelines for you to follow. Okay? So again, we want to make sure that. That. That you really focus on getting that. And then once you have that plan out, what days am I going to do? What. Okay. What day am I going to do this workout? My first workout, when am I going to do that? I'm going to do that Monday. Okay, let's say Monday I do workout one, Tuesday, workout two, Wednesday, workout three, Thursday, workout four, and then Friday back to workout one. Saturday is workout two. Okay. The next week, I'm going to take Sunday off, and I'm going to start a workout three, then four, then five. Write it out for yourself. Give yourself a month. Two months of when are you going to do each workout? Okay. And again, there's a lot of things you can customize and that you can switch around to fit your exact schedule and your exact needs. Okay? So after a couple months of that, you know, you can change things up. You know, I would say after probably at least a month of figuring out, you know, this is my plan, I'm gonna follow it out for a month, see how you feel after that. You know, if you feel after a week that, you know, I don't really like this, then change it. That's fine. Okay. There's no hard and fast rule, but I'm saying keep that same focus. So those three or four focuses that you have, keep that for at least a month before you change it up. Okay? Hit those skills hard. And then after A month, after two months, reevaluate and say, you know what? I want to keep sticking with these three things. I'm going to stick with them. I'm going to keep going with that. So I'm going to do another month, another two months with just this focus again. Or you might say, you know what? I feel pretty good about this, so I'm going to switch this out for this now. So now instead of my focus being ball handling, my focus is going to be finishing. Okay? Now instead of my focus being shooting off the dribble, my focus is going to be shooting off the catch, whatever it might be. Okay? So those are some things you can think about as well after you've done this. Reevaluate you have the experience now and say, okay, this worked, this didn't work. This feels good. This doesn't feel good. I want to keep doing this. I want to switch that up. All right. That's again, what it comes back to when it comes to that experience. Okay, so let's kind of recap this a little bit. You know, first of all, you want to, number one, write down all the things you want to work on. Okay. So, you know, I want to work on. You know, maybe it's everything. Maybe you want to work on every skill in basketball. That's fine. Write it down. Go through that list. Pick three or four things that are the most important to you. Okay. That are the most important skills for you to work on right now and figure out what those are. Okay. Then we're going to focus on solely those things for the next month, at least. Okay. Number two, find drills. Find workouts that target those skills. Target those areas. Okay? You're going to compile those drills, those workouts, into three or four workouts that you can rotate between and hit those areas. Okay. And then what you're going to do after you have those workouts, you're going to plan out how many days per week you're going to be doing those workouts. So maybe you're going to do it four days a week. Maybe you do it five days a week, maybe six days a week, whatever it might be. Plan that out for yourself, and then write down what day you're going to do each workout. Okay. Monday is going to be workout one, Tuesday going to be workout two, et cetera. Write that down for the entire month. Okay. Then you're going to want to stick with that. Okay. Don't do it for a week and then quit or change or completely change everything. Stick with that for a month. And see how you feel after that month. Okay. After you stuck with that for at least a month, maybe longer, reevaluate it and either keep those focuses or change things up. Say, you know what? I want to work on this instead. I want to do this instead. Let's do that, reevaluate it and see if you need to. If you need to change it, maybe you want to keep everything. You want to change some drills, you want to change some workouts, that's completely fine. Okay. You have to be able to recognize that for yourself, though. Okay. And this really is a blueprint to improving your game. And, you know, if you follow it, you're going to start to see results. And if you stay consistent with it, you're really going to start to see improvement. And again, this is really the step that you got to take. So if you haven't been focused in your workouts, if you've been all over the place, you've been doing this, doing that, doing random things, lock. Lock it down. Figure out those three or four areas that you need to target and. And hit those areas hard every single time that you go work out. Okay? And that's how you really see improvement. Okay. If, you know, they always say failing to plan is planning to fail. Right? So we need to make sure that we have a very detailed plan of what we actually want to get out of our training. Okay. It's not good enough to just go to the park and just throw some shots up. We've got to know what's our actual goal here? What do I want to get out of next season? What do I want to be able to do, or what do I want my game to be at? Okay. And then once you have that idea in your mind, you can figure out what are the most important parts of my game? What are the most important areas that I need to hit to be able to get to that goal? Okay. Once you know that, then you're going to say, okay, well, what drills and workouts do I need to do to be able to improve those skills? Then, like I said, research, find out what those drills are going to be, and then at that point, you're going to have. You're really going to have your blueprint. Then determine what workouts are you going to do, which days, write that down. Now, the only thing left is follow along what you just did, stick to it, be consistent, and you'll start to see that improvement. And that's really what it comes down to. So very, very important. And like I said, if you want Some workouts, you want some at least or even just some ideas. A ton of stuff on my channel. Shooting, ball handling, finishing player workouts, scoring workout. Like a ton of stuff that you can find that's gonna help you out. And like I said, I try to make this as simple as I possibly can. Something that you can follow right now, take five minutes, write this stuff out and you're gonna have it down. But if it's complicated to you, if you still feel like you're not sure what you should be doing, first thing I'd say is listen again, don't. Because again, it's simple. But you have to be able to write things down. And that's the first thing I say. But also if you want all this to be done for you, right? So you want the schedule to be done for you, the workouts, the drills, all you have to do is go out and follow it. Check out the programs, my online programs, which are linked down in the description below. You're gonna see the Perimeter Score System, which is a year round training program that's gonna help you to work on all the skills you need to have if you, you know, to become a better perimeter player. So obviously shooting, most important skill in basketball, ball handling, finishing, different sorts of scoring moves, different scoring situations, all a whole bunch of different things that are going to help you to become a better player. All of it laid out for you. You know, a lot of what I just talked about is how I, is how I built that. But of course I said before some stuff is a little bit more complicated, a little more in depth than this, but kind of a similar layout to this. So again, if you want everything to be done for you, that's an option. Also Elite Ball Handling, which is my other program which targets, you know, your ball handling like it says, and that again, everything is laid out for you. So again, if that's something that is interesting to you, go ahead and check that out. Everything's laid out for you. All you got to do is get outside, get to the gym and just follow it and you'll see the improvement just from doing that. Okay, so again, link for that is in the description below. Hopefully that helped you guys out. If that's something you struggle with. Again, I know I get this question all the time. And so again, if you have any questions specifically send me a dm. Any questions, other things as well, make sure you guys send me DMs. And because like I said, you know, everything that I do for the most part on this podcast comes from you know, the DMs that I get and you know, really, really is helpful to me just in terms of having ideas every single week when it's like, okay, I keep getting this question, now I gotta do this and all that. So again, shout out to all you guys who continue to ask questions. I've been trying to get back to Everybody in my DMs as well. Like I said, if you guys are new on YouTube, make sure you like and subscribe as well. Drop a comment, let me know what you think. If you have any ideas, DM me. If you're an Apple podcast, leave a review. Whether you would appreciate that. I'll talk to you guys soon. Peace.
