When pitching to audiences, ditch jargon like inbound lead and outbound marketing. A friend recommending your social media agency to another friend is referral marketing. Your brain avoids hard work, so speakers must translate complex ideas into simple stories people actually want to hear.

Your audience doesn't want you to be smart. They want you to be simple. Recently, one of my friend was addressing a group of young kids. They were trying to build a social media agency, and he kept on talking about inbound lead, outbound marketing, traffic, and all. And after a point of time, I had to intervene. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Do you even understand what you're talking to these kids? And then we had to rephrase it. Let's say Mr. A wants to hire an agency. He would reach out to B, would say, B, do you know anyone who does the social media work? And that's when he will introduce the social media agency. This is called referral marketing. Now, if person B gives a cut or gives a small portion of what he earns to C, that will become affiliate marketing. So when you're speaking to your audience, don't think of them as the smart people. Think of them as how you can simply present your idea in the most easiest manner possible. Most of the human brain is a lazy one. We don't want to spend too much time trying to understand. It's the speaker's responsibility to simplify complex idea into easily understandable stories.
