Technical skills. You're fresh out of college, you're brand new on a new job, you got to give yourself a break. You don't know even what you don't know. And you don't know what you will know in 10 years. So cut yourself a break, give yourself some grace, let yourself off the hook a little bit. However, don't discount the value of your character qualities that got you where you are. Are you resilient, resourceful, optimistic, kind, generous, creative, curious? Those qualities that got you to where you are, they're going to get you to where you need to be. The technical skills will follow. The, the figuring out the how-to of a new organization, or maneuvering through, uh, the HR process, or even your time card, you know, checking in and out— those things will come. But your character qualities, oh man, that took you a lifetime to build, and that will speak louder as you go through those tough changes. Your character qualities speak louder in a lot of ways than your skills.
Becoming more self-aware. Many of them want to get into IT because their colleagues are getting into IT or any other organization where they want to. Because they want a job. But organizations more and more are looking for people who are more passionate towards what they want in life. So becoming more self-aware is the first thing I would say.
We all have been sent to this particular world for a purpose. Our birth was never an accident, you know. So for one human to survive, it had to bet, bet, you know, 40,000 odds. Having said that, it clearly signifies and means that we all have a purpose and objective. The only thing is you need to first believe in yourself and believe in the universe as well. You just have to take step 1, and you will be surprised how step 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 will all be taken care of. The most important thing is go ahead, take step one, and take that step daily.
Always try to see what you can learn from failures. And, um, there is a terminology called fail fast, and one of my friends recently gave me a new perception saying that don't keep telling kids to fail fast. Their focus is not to achieve, their focus becomes failing and learning from it. So that part really strike the chord because I was also telling the same thing all around. So it's okay, you can succeed. So it's about doing, it's not about victory or losing, but whatever we need to learn out of it is extremely important.
Respective of whatever your family background is, whatever your liabilities are, whatever responsibilities you have, whatever background you have, whatever, uh, limitations that you think you have, if you start taking action towards the things that you want in your life, you can achieve any damn thing in the world. Anything can be achieved. Just make your vision big and correspond it, complement it with the action. Vision plus action equals to massive results.
One of the things that I had to learn was I had to learn how to say no in a nice way. I, as much as I would want to, I do not have the time or the energy to accommodate every single request that comes to me. So I had to learn ways to tell people no, but do so in a respectful way.
You can be whoever you want to be. And there is so much support out there. Just talk to an adult. Everybody's happy to guide you. Nobody's there to say, oh no, especially the people that have gone through experience. They're always happy to share it with somebody else. So there's so much help out there and just, just ask and opportunity will come up. They will always come up only if you're open to opportunities, which is what we mentioned earlier. So that's my third tip, just always open-minded. If it doesn't work, doesn't matter. You learned that that doesn't work. It's like a lesson learned. But if you just decline the opportunity before even starting it, that's a failure. That's what I would say.
