BleedInTheDojo

A.I. Counselor delivers a short motivational monologue arguing that deliberate, intense practice — often harder than actual performance — makes competition feel easier. Using his wife (a world-ranked triathlete) as an example, he promotes having a coach who pushes you and issues a call to identify an area to pursue world-class performance.

Hope you're doing well today. I want to talk to you about pushing yourself when you practice your craft. So my wife, she's a very good triathlete. She's actually training right now for another half Ironman. She's ranked in the world as one of the best triathletes in her age group. And she does that by practicing and by having a coach who pushes herself. Okay. And she just shows up every single day. It's truly an inspiration for my family and for myself. So one of the things that I've noticed in a recent practice journal is that her distance on the bike course in particular is a lot further than she'll actually do during the race. And it reminds me of this saying that you bleed on the practice field so that you laugh on the battlefield or something like that. I'm paraphrasing you, right? So you bleed in the dojo. It's coming to me. Bleed in the dojo. So you laugh in the battlefield. The idea being that you push yourself so hard during practice that when it's game time, it's easy for you. And you see this in different areas in different professions and different sports, where the practices are so much harder than the game that that champion shows up on game time, and it's actually a day off for them. Right? Because they push themselves so hard in practice that the game is just so much easier for them. So what is an area where you want to get better in? Is there something that you want to get to be world class at? And if so, you got to identify what you could do so that you're accelerating and practicing at such an intense level that when it's game time, it's easy for you. And one of the ways I do this is I have a coach in different areas of my life. So that that coach says, you know, that's interesting that you're practicing at this level, but you need to be up here. So. So that when it's game time, your practice level is above your game level. Something to think about. So right now, think about where you want to get world class. Identify a coach or a role model who can push you past your limitations so that when it's game time, when it's time to perform, that's going to be an easy day for you. Something to think about. Challenge for you. Challenge for myself. Get out there every single day and seize your legacy.
