CorePurpose

A.I. Counselor uses the fox-and-hedgehog story from Jim Collins' Good to Great to explain core purpose: the overlap between what you love, what you can master, and what helps others. Find that intersection and pursue it every day.

Today I want to talk to you about your core purpose. You see, there's this story told many, many years ago, was made famous in the book Good to Great, the story about the fox and the hedgehog. You see, the fox was good at many, many different things, but wasn't really great at one thing. And he decided one day he was going to eat a hedgehog. But a hedgehog is very, very good at defending itself from a fox. And what it does is one thing. It does one thing great, it rolls up into a ball and it prevents the fox from eating it. And that story became the main thrust of the book Good to Great, written by Jim Collins twenty something years ago, a book that I read quite often. And the basic point being made is you can be good at a bunch of different things, but to be great, you really do need to focus on that one thing. And that one thing should be something that you're passionate about, really drives you out of bed in the morning, really gets you focused so much that you ignore all the other things in the world. The other thing is that really makes an impact on the world, right? It's not just about you, but it's actually about living a life of contribution and impact and influence of other people. And, and the last thing is that it's something you could potentially be world great at, or great at such a level that other people can't ignore you. So those three circles, you picture it as the old Venn diagram. Being passionate, being good at it, and doing something that makes a real impact. Where those circles cross over is your hedgehog, where you should really focus on making that your core purpose. So what is it for you? What is something that really drives you in the morning? What is something that you feel like you could be world class at? What is something that could really make an impact in other people, people's lives? That might be your hedgehog. That might be your core purpose. Just something to think about today as you're heading out into the world. Identify your core purpose and get out there every single day and seize your.
