A student with a 4.0 GPA and 1550 SAT got rejected by four reach schools, while a classmate with lower grades got into three of them. The difference: one had a compelling story about community work that showed how she'd contribute to campus.

I've watched students with a 4.0 GPA and a 1550 SAT get denied everywhere on their lists. And I've watched students with solid but unspectacular transcripts get into schools that, quote, shouldn't have taken them because they brought something the class needed that year that no formula could have predicted. I think about a student I'll call Marcus. Whose numbers were genuinely excellent. Top of his class. A test score in the 99th percentile. On paper, he was a lock. He was denied from 4 of his 5 reach schools. Meanwhile, a classmate with a full point lower GPA got into 3 of those same 5 because her file told a story the numbers alone never could. A specific, sustained commitment to a cause in her community that the committee could picture continuing on their campus. Same high school, same school counselor, same recommendation letter template even, but completely different outcome because one file was a spreadsheet and the other was a case for admissions.
