Hope you're doing well today. I want to talk to you about ignoring the scoreboard. So growing up, I played a lot of football and I had the great pleasure of playing for this one really good disciplinarian football coach, one of the.
High schools I attended.
And one day we were playing this game against somebody that we probably should have easily been beating. But we were down. And the coach called a timeout and came out onto the field and he looked at every single player and he said, what's the score? What is the score?
And every player said, It's 1310, coach, we're down, it's 1310, coach, it's 1310, coach went to every single player and then he looked us in the eyes and said, ignore the scoreboard.
His point was that we're spending too.
Much time obsessing about the score.
We're focused on are we winning, how much are we down by, we're getting panicked, we're pushing ourselves because we're down. Instead, we should have been focusing on the next play.
We should have been focusing on executing that very next play and not worrying about the score.
The coach's job is to worry about.
The score and descend in the play accordingly.
And as players, our focus should be.
On executing that very next play.
The same thing, same point was raised by Nick Saban, longtime University of Alabama.
Football coach who has won multiple national championships. He stresses the point with his players.
That they need to worry only about.
The process, worry about the next play.
At practice, worry about what they're doing in the moment, and let the coaches worry about the long term plan. The same thing happens in our lives, right? Some of us have coaches, some of us have bosses, some of us are our own boss. But the basic idea is you set.
The plan and then you focus in the moment. That you don't worry about the scoreboard moment to moment, but you focus on.
The work that's right in front of you.
And if you do that consistently, the score will take care of itself.
A lot of people talk about this.
As lead indicator versus lag indicators.
We focus on the lead indicators, those things that are immediately in front of.
You that you can control, like showing up to the gym every single day. The lag indicator, the weight number that shows up on the scale will take care of itself. The same thing with your work. If you're focusing on your work day in and day out, that what's immediately in front of you, the long term results will take care of itself. The scoreboard will reflect your day to day efforts just something to consider.
Challenge for myself. Challenge for you?
Go out there every single day, ignore the scoreboard and seize your legacy.
