From law firms to coaching spaces, from motherhood to mentorship. Arlene has lived the work-life dynamic in every form imaginable, and now she's on a mission to help others rise through balance, kindness, and peace. Arlene, welcome to the show today. How you doing?

I'm doing great. That's quite the introduction. Thank you.

Well, you got— you've wore a lot of hats, you've been a lot of places. We just talked backstage and, you know, everything ties in together. So let's get into that. I was really concerned when I saw it and went over the thing. I said, wow, Wow, she's a seasoned attorney. So this lady got gifts. She has gifts. So with that being said, let's jump right into this. From Law to Life Leadership. You've had a rich career as an attorney, coach, and facilitator. How did your professional journey lead you to the deeper work of healing, balance, and soul alignment?

Well, it wasn't just my work. I think it was, uh, I have a son and When he was 3, I got divorced. And he had some attention deficit hyperactivity stuff going on. And I sort of went on a journey to, to help him heal and started healing myself in the process. And, you know, that sort of all blended together with, at the time, you know, being a working mother, because I went out and got my law degree, moved from Kentucky to Ohio, had to get certified in a second state. And so when I started my own law firm, when I was 29, I found out right away, hey, I'm pregnant with him. So it's been a It's been a really interesting journey. And I really have enjoyed every part of it. Some of it has been pretty stressful and sleep deprived. But I wouldn't trade it for the world because it's just been really rich, you know, to be able to help people in the law, to be able to help people as a coach and a mentor. So I mean, I can ask any questions you want. But I really just wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this journey because it's never been boring. That's for sure.

You know, say everything that you like to say because I admire you. And you know, I was talking to someone the other day, and one thing that I admire about you guys is that regardless of the things that you've been through, like you brought up, you say, well, I had a son, and then, you know, this happened when he was 3 years old. And then you had the fortitude not only to keep going and strive and do better for yourself and better for your family, but to have that mentality and the fortitude to want to go out and help others. I just commend you all for that, to be coaches and facilitators and things of that nature, mentors, where you take what you you have and try to help others where you may be positioned to, you know, live a good life, but it's not all about that. So I appreciate you guys for the service that you do for many, man, to bring many into the fold. So I appreciate what you do, Arlene. So let me ask you, Arlene, from burnout to balance, you've lived through the reality of being a working mother, as you just mentioned, in multiple life stages. What personal challenges pushed you to redefine what balance actually means?

Well, it took me a while. I mean, I sort of brought the word harmony into the word balance because balance for me as an attorney felt like trying to balance the scales of justice and trying to be perfect, which of course is not possible. It sort of gets us to feel bad about ourselves because we can never live up to those kind of expectations. And I feel like that balance and harmony that I learned to strive for and have more of was constantly changing. And I really had to be flexible and adaptable because it's very different to be a woman beginning her own business in the practice of law and having a newborn son to having him being in middle school or high school. So I sort of had to evolve and go with the flow of it all. I think that's what we all have to do. You know, that one thing that might work to bring more balance and harmony in our lives and how we— how much work or how much home stuff we do, how we get everything done that we need to get done without losing our minds and having more peace and harmony is going to change from moment to moment or from week to week or year to year, whatever, based upon what's actually going on in our life. You know, how's our health? You know, how old are our children? What's going on at work? What's going on at home? What's going on in our community that we're involved in? So there's no, like, easy pat answers that I can say, this is what I did, follow this. But what I would just say is that it's really important to find things, no matter what's going on in your life, that bring you joy, that make your heart sing. No matter how hard you have to work, no matter how many responsibilities that you have, it's really important to bring that self-love and self-care to yourself so that you have a full cup to give to others. Otherwise, you're going to get burnt out.

Mm, I like that. Have a full cup for yourself so that you can be able to give to others. That's just like Esther The word say that he was full of so much word that when she came and touched his garment, it all went from him, but he knew where to go back and get that power and that balance. And speaking of balance, let's go here, Arlene. Beyond work-life balances, you talk about work, as you just mentioned just before, I want you to elaborate on this a little bit, work-life harmony, not just balance. What's the difference and why is that distinction important for high achievers and caretakers alike?

Well, I think they go together. You have the balance of what works best for you in each moment. And the harmony feels like a more heart-based thing. It's like, what do I need to bring that more joy and care and confidence and that willingness to endure whatever is going on in our life and stepping forward in our life? It feels like just a much broader concept and way of being than just balancing ourselves. And so they really go together. And I think it helps us to step out of I should do this or I should do that or I should be like this or I should be like that. Because when we should ourselves, we're just judging ourselves and it opens ourselves up to, well, I could do this. I wonder how that would be. So we can try different things in our life to bring more harmony, to bring more balance to our life and see how it goes. Maybe we have friends that we can talk to who are in similar situations. I always believe in bringing together a tribe of people that are going through similar things so that we can bounce off of each other and support each other so we're not in this alone. So I guess both factors you felt you wanted to ask me.

Yeah, you know, you made a good point because I thought about it when you said it earlier where you were talking about the many challenges, you know what I'm saying? And every day or every week may be different, you know, than the week before from the things that you have to do. And so something you just said just made me think about it, because we all can have similar situations. We can go through, have similar situations, so in that way we can talk. But although we have similar situations, we all have to address it differently because everybody's household is structured differently. Like, my wife may not be this person's wife, and that person, he may not be me. Or like you say, you know, you may have small kids or you may have older kids. So we can have similar situations What they're not the same because we have to address them differently. No two households are run the same. You know how you hear people all say all the time, well, I'm not getting married because, you know, my mother and father, they— well, that was your mother and father, I had nothing to do with you. Or on the flip side, they say, well, my mother and father been married for 35 years. Well, that don't mean that you're gonna be married for 35 years because it's a whole different dynamic, you know. So, so it's a little giving, it's a little balance there, you know, like you gotta balance it. That's just, that's life. So let me ask you, Ellen, breath and boundaries. How can tools like breathwork, meditation, and boundary setting help people heal and lead better lives, especially in chaotic or high-demand environments?

Yeah, well, I believe in healing from the inside out because if I'm in a calm, kind of centered grounded, fully present space, I might have all the same challenges, all the same obstacles, all the same chaos or whatever it is that's going on in my life. But I'm going to be able to handle it much better because of where I'm at. If I'm stressed out, if I can't think, that I'm so stressed and I feel overwhelmed, I feel burnt out and I just don't know what to do. And, and I feel like I'm all stressed and tense. I'm not going to be able to handle much of anything. So what breathwork does— and there's like one really simple kind of breathwork that I always love to share with people initially because it's so easy, we can do it anywhere. If we breathe in through our nose and we breathe out through our nose and our out-breath is longer than our in-breath, what it does is it physiologically tells our body to rest and relax, to calm down. And so if we can practice that kind of breathwork anywhere, you know, someone's talking to us, we're We're going to the grocery store, we're driving our car, whatever is going on in our life, we have to breathe anyway. We're going to die. So if we just sort of breathe in through our nose and out through our nose, I mean, there's many ways to breathe. What that does is it helps us to rest, relax, release, and let go of stress. And, you know, if we're really wound up, maybe it's, you know, 10 or 15 minutes we're doing it, but we can do other things while it's happening. And of course, there's many other kinds of ways that we can breathe. Another way that is really helpful, that helps you like be really centered in your heart, is like just to breathe in through our nose and breathe out through the nose and have it just like a circle. So as we breathe in, before we are all filled up, we breathe out. And as we breathe out, before we're all empty, we breathe in. And that can help to like really center us in our hearts and be really fully present so that we're not all up here in our heads because we're trying to figure out everything in our heads. It's going to drive us crazy. We're going to go around and around and around in circles and it's just going to get—

Yeah.

So breathwork is really important and it's really important to be grounded and fully present. And I have a really kind of quirky way to help people do that. And that is that I just sort of visualize— and I love nature, I love being out in nature. That's why I like Colorado. I mean, there's so many beautiful places in the United States. But I like to visualize that I'm a tree and there's like this column of white light going down my legs and it comes out my feet and I have these huge roots of light and they anchor me into the heart of the planet. So I'm really here. And if I'm a tree, you're not going to blow me over. You can't push me over. I'm solid. I'm here. And that helps me to be with you or anybody I'm with fully present here now. So I'm not thinking about my grocery list. I'm not thinking about what I'm doing later tonight. I'm right here with you, CJ. And it helps It helps us to be right here with whatever we're doing. And when we're in that fully present moment, then we're not really thinking about the future and being anxious about it or thinking about the past and reminiscing or feeling remorseful or something we didn't do. Life's a lot easier.

I like that. Hey, I had a lady— shout out to Z Clark— and I'm going to try to do what she's doing. She was a breath coach and she said, she said, you go— like you do, uh, 8 seconds and then you go from— then you go backwards and then you go, you know what I'm saying? Just breathing in and out. As you see, I haven't mastered that yet, but I know what you're talking about. I've had, I've had a couple people come in talking about breathwork. And so I know what you said, that this is a vital thing because— and more people, as what you're doing now, are bringing awareness to this, to the breathing. I had never heard of it before as far as you hear meditation, but then because I think somebody said they was a breath coach, I'm like, whoa, I'd never heard of that. And so they was explaining it. And so now more people coming out and saying how important this is or how valuable to your health, like you said earlier, to your mindset. And so I hope that you guys continue putting this out there and letting people know how important it is, not only to our health, but to our mindset and to how we approach life. Itself. So let me ask you a question, Arlen. Inner critic versus inner coach. You help clients transform their inner critic into inner coach. What does that process look like, and why do so many people silently battle self-judgment?

It just seems like it's— to me, it seems like it's sort of passed on from generation to generation, and that, you know, it's really people are taught to focus on everything they do wrong and all the mistakes that they make instead of acknowledging themselves for every little small victory they accomplished during the day. And so we really just have to begin to turn around our focus instead of focusing on, you know, mistakes as being something bad to beat myself up. Hey, it's just an opportunity to learn and grow. I made a mistake. Sometimes I make whoppers of mistakes. I don't know about you, but okay. Okay, I made this mistake. How can I learn and grow from this? If I'm faced with something similar again, what can I do differently? And you can, like, feel into it and visualize, okay, if I'm faced with something similar, I'm not going to put my foot in my mouth like I did before. This is what I'm going to do. This is how I'm going to be different. That's more about who I'm choosing to be, who I'm aspiring to be. And so that's one really important thing. And another thing is that most of us, I think everyone, we have this ability, you know, for someone that we love and is going through something like we were going through and they're telling us all the things that are going wrong in their life, everything that's happening, and we're listening, we would have the ability to be supportive and nurturing and kind, to champion their successes, what they're actually doing that's helping. And if they were really just going down that tube into that dark place, maybe deliver a little bit of tough love to pull them back out and say, hey, get a grip. This is what's more of what's going on. And so since we can do it for other people, we have to get beyond that feeling that it's selfish. We're doing something wrong and give that to ourselves, you know, to champion ourselves. If we're feeling down, we made a mistake or things are going a little bit south or they're difficult or whatever is happening. We already have that. No one has to teach it to us. We just have to give ourselves permission to start Practicing that so it becomes a part of who we are.

And true to your point, and a lot of times too, we have to get it to a place where we can think like that because a lot of times people, as we know, people will continue pulling you into that place, you know, like you're not worthy or, you know, who are you to be doing this and that now? And so it becomes a mindset. I guess that's when we just have to And don't let nobody deter you from where you're trying to go in life because people will do that. And so as you said earlier too, as you trying to encourage someone, so it all depends on your words, you know, sometimes you can be uplifting to somebody and sometimes you could be tearing people down while you trying to uplift them. But if you have a pure heart, as I was reading something about one of your quotes earlier, if you have a pure heart, then like you said, you will try to take somebody and say, okay, this happened, that happened, but look at it at this side, look at the brighter side, you have or you have a beautiful family and this and that. You have things to continue to move forward for. And a lot of times we lose track of that. So I get what you said now. I get what you said. So let me ask you—

I want to talk about— before you go to the next question, I want to add one more thing because you've raised something really, really important. The people that we surround ourselves with, those are the people we're going to become more like. So if we have people around us like you were talking about who just cut us down and aren't supportive,— even if they're our family members, you know, at least have to see them a lot less or not have those kind of friends because they're not really friends and they're not supporting us to be our best selves. So I just wanted to put out a good "yay" shout because you shared that and tell people, you know, gosh, if you had people like that, that's not very helpful. They're not really your friends.

And I've always tried to be a good friend because you said something too, and I'm learning that this is what most people don't like. They don't like the tough love, you know. Sometimes you just can't cuddle and baby somebody, man. You got to pull yourself up out of there. I got another podcast called Planting Seeds with CJ, and I have an episode coming out next week. Not just next week, it's called Man Up. There's something you just gotta man up, you know, like man up. And so sometimes we don't want to be talked to that way because we're used to being talked to, you know, when you talk to a man, you know, you got— sometimes you just gotta man up, man, and put on your big boy pants. And look, and you said something earlier that, I mean, you have to look at yourself. Look at yourself and who am I, where am I trying to go, instead of looking at yourself and then always accusing or trying to blame others for where you are. You got to evaluate yourself. I just did one called Man in the Mirror, and a lot of times we don't like looking in that mirror because if we look in that mirror long enough, Arlene, then we may see something that we may have to change about ourselves. But because I don't want to change the direction that I'm going, I don't want to get my mind right and start breathing more easily and getting things together. If I look at myself too long, I might have to change something, so I don't want to look at that man in the middle. So let me ask you, Arlen, kindness as a life strategy. You believe in leading with kindness, patience, and tolerance. How do those qualities serve people in business, relationship, and personal development?

Well, I don't usually quote like, um, an old wives' tale saying that women used to say that you can attract more to you with honey than you can with, you know, mace or something. But, you know, it is true. I think we really need to start with ourselves because how can we be kind, patient, and with other people if we're not kind, patient, and tolerant with ourselves? And to me, it's like this beautiful trinity, you know, am I being kind, patient, and tolerant with myself, kind of like this beautiful triangle. And so if we're not, you know, well, how can I change that? And I'm not saying I'm perfect here because sometimes when I'm in traffic and someone cuts me off and goes 50 miles an hour slower than the speed limit in front of me.

Clearly.

I'm not beyond that yet, but that is my— I'm aspiring to be kind and patient and tolerant in this situation. But, you know, so we always have room to grow, but it's important to give that to ourselves. And boundaries come with that too. I'm not here to be anyone's doormat or to be people pleasing and then have myself drained because I'm giving myself away to other people who are just going to use it to pump up a flat tire and come back and run want more. So we have to have, you know, those strong, clear, and appropriate boundaries of what's okay and not okay. But within that, the kindness, patience, and tolerance— I mean, what we focus on is when we're going to get more of in our lives. So we might as well focus on something that's going to be uplifting to ourselves and others.

Mm, I like that. I like that. And for you people that don't know how to drive, get in the slow lane. Doing 50, 45 miles per hour, and we out here doing 70. You know, but I wouldn't be doing 70. Well, Arlene, that in the Rocky Mountains, there's no way. Like I told her before, I won't even be on the mountains. So let me ask you, the power of soul reading. Tell us about your soul reading. What are they and who are they for, and how do they help people unlock deeper insight and clarity?

Well, thank you for asking. So soul reading is— I use psychic tarot oracle cards and I use them as a mentoring tool, not as a psychic tool, where I heart connect with the other person. You can do it online. Most of my clients are not in Colorado or in the Rocky Mountains or driving in the Rocky Mountains. So basically what I do is, is they pick some, I just move my fingers along and we, you know, and they pick some and I share like the opportunities that are available to them. You know, what challenges they could face and how to move around them. If they have any questions about their life, I can ask them. But it's a soul-to-soul reading, it's not a personality reading. So, you know, if they want to know if they're going to get a man or they're going to win the lottery, I'm not going to be able to tell them. But something that the cards share might give them an inclination about ways to move forward with that. If they really want to have a relationship, if they really want to step forward into something new, or they want to let something go, You put that energy into the cards, and in some way they're going to share like advice or whatever to do. And I really like when I do this, that I have people like on their cell phone record the sessions because you can do it on your camera. And that way, if I'm talking fast like I am now, which I do when I'm like allowing all that love to flow through me to them, they can work with it for the next 3 or 4 months and, you know, get a picture of the cards and, and use it to continue to help them move forward. Because I feel like as adults, we just don't learn, like, by listening or by seeing. When we actually see cards, we get, like, that audio kind of visual thing going together. It seems like it just sort of resonates with people a lot more, and, and something clicks with them that makes it easier to step forward.

I like that. Hey, you all, you heard what she said. She said it's about the heart. She doesn't use it, so don't be calling 1-800— she's not Cleo, so don't be calling 1-800-ATTORNEY-MILLER thinking that she's gonna give you a reading to find a husband. That's not gonna happen. And so let me ask you, Allen, emergency toolkits and recalibration. You speak about an emergency toolkit for emotional regulations. What's in yours, and how can our listeners build that works in real life?

So, you know, when we're like all calm and settled, we can pick maybe 3 things that we're going to turn to if something triggers us or we get really emotionally upset. If something happened in the world and we get triggered by whatever happens, so it really throws us off base. So we're like really out of sorts. We need to have something that we've practiced before that we can turn to now and allow us to just to get back to that kind of place of homeostasis. And so my emergency toolkit is, first of all, breathe, because we're— I'm going to be oxygenating my body, I'm going to be forcing myself to calm down, and then I really feel those roots of light into the ground. And the other thing that I do is I like to put this beautiful golden bubble of protection around myself, and I just affirm that the only thing that can come— this is my personal sanctuary, my sacred space. Only thing that can come in here is energies that are about love. Anything that's about fear that anyone sends me just bounces back off to its source. So if I get all upset, my golden bubble is going to disappear. So I put that beautiful golden bubble, affirm that it's not about love, or someone else has dumped their stuff in my energy field or projected at me, it's just going right back to them. And I'm gonna flood my golden bubble of protection with beautiful light and love source. And I'm going to be grounded. I'm going to breathe. I'm going to oxygenate my body, and I'm going to choose to be fully present here now. So those are the 3 things that are in my emergency toolkit, but it can be anything that works for you. You know, some people, some of my friends, they just want to go for a run, or they want to go out in their garden. They want to listen to some music and dance around. Whatever works for you to let go of that stress, to let go of that trigger, do it so that you can come back to this really grounded, centered heart space.

I like that. I like that because I think I got some of them tools in my toolkit. I may not have the golden. I think I'm going to put a blue one around that because what she was really saying to you all is this, and she didn't say it, but I said it for her. Don't be coming around me with all that garbage, all that nonsense. I ain't trying to hear it. It's going to bounce right back to you. Because I'm in my blue dome. And when you bring that nonsense, CJ ain't trying to hear it, nor is Attorney Miller trying to hear all that garbage. So, well, I got one more question for you, and then I have a little game. It's called Quick Fire Round. I'm gonna ask you 5 questions, and all you have to do is answer with the first thing that comes to your mind. I kind of changed a little bit. Normally I let my guests know before, but they've been cheating a little bit. Oh my gosh, I was getting people to get a little nervous, you know. Then someone was getting scared like, oh, what he's going to ask me? Then they wind up having a good time, and I believe you will too. And so, but before I go there, I got one more question for you. Legacy and leadership, because this is what you're all about. You've lived, led, mothered, mentored, and built a movement What's the legacy you're building? And what final message do you have for women navigating the noise of life while still trying to hear their soul?

Wow, that's a big question. I just feel like, for me, my goal is that there's more love on the planet when I die than when I'm born. And I like to keep it really simple. You don't have to do a whole bunch of stuff. You know, am I helping to ground and express more love because of my presence here? I hope so. And I guess what I would share to women is what we already talked about is that just choose to be kind, patient, and tolerant with yourself. You know, we all have a lot on our plates, whether we're a man or a woman, and that we tend to be really hard on ourselves as women. We need to stop that and give to ourselves what we give to others, because like we shared at the beginning, if we don't have a full cup of love, we're going to get drained and we're not going to be a very nice person. So when you give that kindness, patience, and tolerance to yourself, yourself, you're going to be filled up and it's going to be a lot easier to be the kind of person that you really want to be.

Mm, I like that. Get that full cup, be filled up, and you be nice and kind to people. Everybody, that just don't go for women, that goes for all of us, men and women. Legacy and leadership, we all can be leaders and we all can leave a legacy, just as Attorney Miller. Has just laid out the great game plan. So let me— you ready for this? I'm right around. All righty then. Question number 1: one word that defines your purpose?

Joy.

Mm, like that one. Good one. Favorite book you recommend to your clients?

I have a lot of books. The book I'm reading, just almost finished now, is called Illusions by, um, Richard Bach. I love— he's just a really cool author. He's very out there.

Sé very, very spacey. So non-negotiable self-care practice.

A non-negotiable self-care practice is to make time for myself every morning that's just for me to either breathe or meditate or just do something to fill up my heart with love so that I can— before I go out and greet the rest of the world.

Gotta put on that happy face and and put that dome around me, then I come out my dome with happiness. One thing every woman should stop apologizing for?

Everything. I mean, if you listen to women talk, we're always saying, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Men don't do that. Why do we do that? We need to stop apologizing for everything. It's like we're apologizing for breathing. We just need to notice what we're doing and stop.

I don't know. I'm, you know, in my household we had this policy where we agree to disagree because like we said earlier, every household is structured differently. A work-life win is basically where I go, oh, I did that again and that didn't go so well. And I don't react and I just go, oh my gosh, what can I do to fix this now? How can I make this right? And I just do it. That's a work-life win.

So I do work-life balance and harmony coaching. I do transformational mentoring. So the difference between coaching and mentoring— coaching, the client is the expert and I partner with the client to decide what their focus is, where they're going, what their goals are, and how to reach them. With mentoring, basically people are standing on my shoulders. You know, what I've learned and some of the things I've shared, you know, to help them step forward. So I do coaching, I do mentoring, I facilitate workshops, and I also do the soul readings. And I am at the present time beginning to step more into the speaker's realm and to get out there and do some of that stuff.

Mm, what a powerful lady. And she's an attorney as well. What a lady that wears many, many, many, many hats up there in in the Rocky Mountains. Well, she said 15, 12 miles away. 15 miles from Boulder, right?

I'm about 12 minutes down the road from Boulder and about 45 minutes from downtown Denver in Longmont, Colorado.
