In this conversational video, host Curt Janzen opens by emphasizing the personal stakes of workplace safety, noting his family responsibilities and the desire for workers to return home unharmed. He interviews Kat, a seasoned construction worker, who recounts her decade‑long experience on commercial sites and exposes a pervasive problem: cheap, $20 “fall‑arrest” certificates that are obtained in minutes from unqualified providers, undermining real safety training. Kat describes how this shortcut culture persisted at many firms until she joined Beyond, where a more collaborative safety approach is taken. Beyond’s health‑and‑safety committee includes members from management down to frontline workers, ensuring that safety solutions are practical, comfortable, and actually improve efficiency rather than hinder it. The discussion shifts to a brief hiring plug: speaker C introduces Ryan, manager of the Insulation and Thermal Division, who outlines the qualities sought in fire‑proofing crew members, the company’s generous benefits (RSP matching, statutory holidays, week‑long Christmas break, performance bonuses), and the culture of teamwork and pride in quality work. Contact information for applications (Hiring@beyondgroup.ca, ryan@beyondgroup.ca) is provided. The video closes with a call to action to subscribe and share, reinforcing the message that there are no cheap shortcuts to safety or success.

$20? It doesn't buy your life back, a body part, or anything else. Today we're talking about safety. Safety is something you don't want to talk about, but you definitely don't want to feel it. We really want to bring safety home. I'm lucky enough I actually still have a wife that likes me, wants to hang out with me. I've got 3 boys that depend on me emotionally, physically, financially, and I want to make it home to them every day safe and sound. And I also feel like it's, it's what every person in our company deserves is to Work hard, but go home and enjoy the things that they love, the people that they love. And that's why safety is so important to us. You say you would die for your family, but we'd rather you live for them. Today we sit down with Kat, and she's going to talk to you about safety and a fake $20 certificate.
I got into construction about 10 years ago. I started off doing some heavy equipment operating and then quickly got into drywall and steel stud framing on commercial sites. One of the most impactful lessons I learned was actually on the safety level. So I'd been through many different companies throughout my career, and lots of them were very focused on getting the job done quick. They didn't want to spend a lot of money on safety or training, and we just wanted to get the job done as fast as we could too, because that's what was expected of us. So what's really crazy is I would often get sent when I need a safety certificate for Fall arrest, my Lyft tickets. I'd get given $20 and get sent to a guy's house. I'd hand him the $20 and he'd print me off a ticket in like 5, 10 minutes.
All right, that's, that's good. It's hard to trace, I guess.
When I started at Beyond, I remember one of my tickets had expired and they said that they'd send me to one of the courses, get me recertified. And I told them, oh no, like, I have a guy, it's way faster, I can get it tonight. I can be back on site the next day. And I just remember the horrified looks of everyone in the office. And right then I knew that this was a big problem and this is not the way that things should be done.
Hey guys, I'm rolling in here with Ryan. We're just interrupting this program real quick to talk about fireproofing. We are hiring some great, talented, not afraid to get dirty individuals for fireproofing on the Beyond Thermal team. And Ryan here is the manager of the Insulation and Thermal Division. What kind of candidate are we looking for?
Yeah, so we're looking for hardworking individuals, people that aren't afraid of getting dirty, work well in groups, and like having a good time at work.
What kind of benefits can they be looking at?
So, you'd be able to look forward to working for a pretty great company that's got frontline workers front of mind. We do have a great benefits package, RSP matching program. We have every stat holiday we have off. We're off for a whole week at Christmas time. And above and beyond all that, we have pretty great bonus programs based on performance.
And there's a lot more, but we were not going to get into all that. And what can they expect?
So you can expect to work with a great group of people, like to have a good time working towards a common goal. We like to pride ourselves in the quality of work we do, but we want to have a great time doing it.
That's right.
Yeah.
If you are interested in that, you can send your resume to Hiring?
Hiring@beyondgroup.ca works. You can also send it directly to me, which is ryan@beyondgroup.ca.
So I always thought that safety was kind of like a burden, that something you had to do, and it took so much time out of your day and it was really inconvenient. And now throughout my career, I've realized that safety was just being done wrong. It doesn't need to take a lot of time. It doesn't need to take time out of your day. It should actually make your day faster because you're not concerned about, hey, if I do something wrong, I'm going to slip, I'm going to fall, I'm not going to be back to my family at the end of the day. It really takes your company working with you to find those solutions that are going to make you efficient, fast, and safe. There's definitely an old-school mindset about safety where as soon as a safety person walks on site, everyone groans. They throw their safety glasses on, and as soon as they leave, then they take them right off again. And I've definitely been there and thought that till I have seen people have some pretty life-altering injuries and seen them not be able to come back to work. And I'd say it's, it's worth it. Find some safety gear that works for you, that makes it comfortable and makes you efficient to do the job. So at Beyond, we have a health and safety committee and we have many members. in management and all the way down to workers. So we try to make sure that the workers really do have a say in what's going on and how they're working. It doesn't make sense for management to say, hey, you have to do this, this is how it is, wear all this, when it's going to slow you down and in some cases potentially make you unsafe because you can't move, you can't get your job done, and then you're struggling on site, getting frustrated. So we really take a lot of care in making sure that everyone has a say and really trying to find any new thing, any new tool, any new thing that's out there so we can make everyone have a good day and go home to their families.

I had three cameras on me. Hey, yeah, you got all my angles.
Uh huh.
Okay, safety first.
Good job, guys. Thank you.
You're walking a little loud to make it look like I'm doing work.
