Lesson Learned - Acceptance and Self

Cynthia reflects on accepting yourself after a codependent marriage ends. She argues people can have multiple soulmates, and that real growth means sitting with discomfort to learn how to love others well.

Hi, Cynthia here again. I wanted to touch base with you and share with you an insight in terms of how acceptance without understanding is lived in a daily part of my life. And specifically talking about Step 2, which if you recall is acceptance of self. And it really relates to, in my past, I was married. And at the end of the day, it became a very codependent relationship. Certainly one that I was very codependent upon. And what I found is that my inability to move on and to deal with romantic interests and connections with others at that level is very much inhibited by the constraints of being, continuing to be codependent. And I've come to the harsh realization that the only way that I can continue to grow is to learn to push myself into uncomfortable space outside of that dependency and to move forward. And realizing that in a codependent relationship that means somebody will get left behind. And while I'm no longer married, there still is that very intense feeling of being connected with somebody who was not only the person I was married to, but a best friend, a soulmate. And I don't believe in one soulmate. For life. I believe that people come in and out of our life in order to help us and educate us and teach us. And I believe that everyone has soulmates that they connect with. And it could be for short periods of time and it could be for long periods of time. But in doing so, it really is a way for For us to understand that that connection, regardless of the amount of time, is a very intense, perhaps soulful level connection. And breaking from that to move on to other relationships and other connections is very tough. When we do our hard work on ourselves, on acceptance of self, Coming to these realizations is the first step. And learning what to do about it is obviously the follow-through from that knowledge. So, I accept that I was in a codependent relationship. I accept that I was codependent. I accept that I have to move forward. And it will hurt to lose this piece, this last piece of a connection that I have had with another human being. And in doing so, I may move forward, they may move forward, we may move forward in two completely different directions. Or one of us may not move forward at all. But certainly learning to accept myself. And learning to accept that my journey continues to always move forward, I believe that I will continue to move forward into a place where I can truly enjoy acceptance of self in order to love others. Thanks for listening. Hugs.
